I took Advanced Survey of World Art with him. By reading all the other reviews on this page I was scared to take the class, especially since it's required, but I stuck it up and took it anyway, and actually it really isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Professor Levy is very funny and sarcastic, cracking jokes every once in a while about the art and comparing it to modern day life. Your course grade consists of 3 essays ... or midterms, if you will, and that's all. You should come to class everyday though and not miss any, or if you have to, get the notes from someone, because his tests are based on the notes - and he explains it word for word- just repeat what he said about the questions, study it, and write it down. He also gives you the essay questions on a handout a week before the test for you to study. I give him an A!

I was scared to death to take this class because of Dr. Levy's bad reviews but my experience with this professor wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. If you are serious about Art and to learn it's history behind it then this class shouldn't be a problem, you just have to put in your time and effort. Hard work pays off and it will show in your grade. Exams are all essay format and when he means an essay he really means write an essay not just one paragraph. I usually made mine 2-5 paragraphs long. He speaks quite fast during lectures so you must listen very carefully and take good notes. Almost everything he goes over will be needed on the exam so try to jot down everything he says! I would also suggest making friends with someone in the class so if you're sick one day and cannot make it in you can retrieve those notes from someone because missing a day will hurt you on the exams.
Pros:
Hands out study guides a week before exam day
Cons:
Speaks fast during lectures

Professor Levy can seem intimidating due to his honest critiques but that's a great quality in a person. He's honest and sticks to his beliefs. He tells you if he thinks you're wrong and sometimes just laughs it off. He cracks a joke here and there once in a while. There were 2 midterms which consisted of studying for 25-35 works which only 8 will be on the test. The only way to get a good grade is if you repeat the exact words he had said during lecture meaning it is critical to make it to every class. The final consists of 8 slides also and an essay. The only use for the book was to have the pictures on hand in order to be able to identify them. Dr. Levy knows his material and goes through them fairly quickly. If he catches you sleeping he may chew your head off in front of the whole class. I felt sorry for the guy.

this class is like no other art history class. i really, really loved it! if you need to take an art history class and are dreading hours and hours of slides- take this! half of the days will be experiential: you will learn how to go on shamanic journeys (learn how to navigate in non-ordinary reality)! the other half you see slides on shamanic art from around the world-truly fascinating. this is mixed with lecture on the art itself as well as the peoples who created the art. great class for anthro students. there are 2 tests, (4 essay questions, easy if you did the readings (a reader, not text) and if you came to class) and one paper on shamanic art. he is very nice, though a bit scattered sometimes.

In my opinion, this professor is just here to express his interest in his subject, however he has no interest in his students' well-being. In fact, he gets offended if you don't understand his materials. And he yell at you for asking him questions. He freaking yell at me for asking him about the grading when I was confused and told me to give him a break and that I was complaining when I simply was asking because I was confused. I do no reccomend anyone to take a course from this Professor. He is selfish. He is just here to speak on his interests but not really care about teaching his students.

Mark is a wonderful professor. The most important thing for all of his classes is attendance and good note taking. I would recommend reading for Art & Philosophy of the East, and Shamanism and Art, mainly because it helps emphasise what he says in class. He will definitely make you look at art in a completely different way (GOOD). I would recommend him for students interested in learning and ones who make effort to attend every class. I would also recommend recording his lectures, as he can sometimes go a little fast. You will leans lots in his classes!

I only give him a C because he`s rude to students, cutting them off in mid question and talking over them. If he weren`t rude, I`d give him an A. The tests are in class essays, and if you regurgitate what he says verbatim, youll ace the class. Although he was rude, I did learn, even though he tends to repeat himself a lot. He doesnt take attendance, but it is very important to get the notes if youre gonna miss class. He doesnt test on slides anymore, and you dont have to do the reading if you take good notes.

He is a complete jerk. Let me say it again, a JERK. I came to every class, never missed a day nor did I leave early, took very good notes with the advantage of my laptop, studied very hard hours and hours before the exam, and YET..he still gave me a low grade. It's a passing grade, but it's so upsetting. It's kinda sad because it is a required course if you are an art student. I have had many professors with PhDs in the past, and nothing compares to his uptight shamanistic, egotistic jackass face. blahh!

this profeesor is a very hard professor. You have to go to all his classes and taking very, very, very good notes in order for you to do well in his classes. The only thing you will need the book for is to see the pictures. On his tests he give you 30 to 33 paintings to study, then he will give 8 out of the 33 to write about them. No notes no nothing, but there is a catch you cannot use what you think is ok, you have to right exactly his lectures, so take excellent notes and you will be fine.

This teacher is a true douche bag, he's very full of himself and rarely lets students talk. If he doesn't agree with you, he'll immediately cut you off and continue on with his own opinion. The class itself is very challenging. There are 3 exams which consists of writing short essays for 4 prompts. He gives you the questions before hand but his lectures and reader aren't very helpful in answering the questions. He also likes to combine questions so really you're answering 5 essay prompts.

This guy is a dick. His tests are very difficult and his lectures are beyond boring. He thinks hes the best at what he does and is very opinionated. I lost respect for this teacher when someone did not do well on a midterm, so he laughed in their face and told everyone how poorly they did, he later said there was no hope in passing the course. If you love being humiliated then take Levy.

The course material is interesting but, Levy is BORING and very uptight. You can't really talk to him about your grade or anything else for that matter unless you agree with him. I do not recommend him but, you can make thru the class if you show up and do exactly what he says. He is also a hard grader not everybody cares about Art and he really wants details as we are all artists.

Levy is one very boring and unorganized person. It is sad that such works of art like Van Gogh and Monet were presented in such a boring and uninteresting manner. He doesn't care and doesn't know how to involve students. The only thing he knows and likes is hearing his voice bla bla bla... The exams - memorizing his words. Again bla bla bla....

I learned so much in this exciting course. With the tests being essay with time to prepare ahead, it condenses your knowledge into something to take away with you even after the course. In class we embarked on inner journeys that changed my life. I even made a few new friends that share a new love and respect for shamanism.

Pros: He does know his stuff sorta.
Cons: When you ask him questions, he doesnt really answer them but speaks in circles. He complains about his exwife and he belittles students.
I use to love art before him. Infact Ive loved art my whole life, but he makes me dread coming to class. Very high pitched nasal voice.

Very rude to students. Usually he cuts students off in the middle of asking a question, and likes to put down opions given while analizing art. His exams are short essay on eight slides, but he gives a list of seventy-five slides to study. If looking for an easy art elective DO NOT TAKE his class.

If you want to do well in his class, do your best impression of him. He looks at art aesthetics objectively, and only his opinion on any given piece is correct. If you have your own opinion that slightly differs from his, he grades you down violently. He`s also sort of a jerk.

If you take good notes and do the reading, this class is a breeze. He knows so much and if you show him respect, he`ll give you the same. He`s also very understanding when it comes to missed tests. I highly reccoment ANY art history course taught by Dr. Levy

Levy will trash your GPA if he doesn't like you. There's no getting around it though, he teaches required courses. He's amazingly egotistical for a wanna be Shaman. Just regurgitate everything he says, keep your mouth shut otherwise and he'll love you.
