CHEM 1202
GENERAL CHEMISTRY
4****
Pros: He gives out a TON of extra credit.
Cons: All the online work can be a bit much at times.
You can find the solutions to the online quizzes and bonus quizzes if you have a Mac. Open it up in Safari and right click on the PDF, click "Open in New Frame." In the URL, change the "F" to an "S" on the filename, and VIOLA.

CHEM 1202
GENERAL CHEMISTRY
4****
Pros: gives lots of oppurtunities to bring your grade up

you can cheat on the bonus test and anything with an embedded file.(right click on the page and click 'view page source', then press Ctrl+F then type in 'embed', copy the link thing that says something like ""/userimages/jbhopkins@lsu/1202Bex1Spr2011/QuizF1.pdf'. then open a new tap or browser and type in 'webassign.net' then paste the what you copied from the source page into the adress bar. it should come up with the test you are doing. but to get the answers type in an 'S' instead of an 'F'....so the solution page website should be something like this,,,,"webassign.net/userimages/jbhopkins@lsu/1202Bex1Spr2011/QuizS1.pdf"
Cons: weird way of calculating final grade

Pros: He makes it so easy for you to succeed with all the Bonus Exams. If you go to class and do the homework, and DO THE BONUS EXAMS, you will make a good grade.
Cons: You have to go to class for the clicker questions, or if you feel like you can succeed without the lectures, you can give your clicker to a friend who goes to class.
Protip: He shows favoritism toward the Asian students in class.

CHEM 1202
GENERAL CHEMISTRY
5*****
Pros: He is an AWESOME teacher. Dr. Hopkins really makes the information clear and straight to the point. With this professor you actually learn the material and it sticks with you, rather than just learning it temporarily for an exam. He truly cares about his students, where they want to go, what they want to do, what they are struggling with, etc. and he puts a lot of time into helping them.
Cons: His exams are EXTREMELY hard, but in the end it works out because his students perform better on the final then other students from different professors. The course requires A LOT of time and work, but is very rewarding.
Go to his office hours as much as possible. Ask questions. Do all the "easy" points and take them seriously (online quizes, homework, bonus exams, clicker questions). You can view the solutions before quizes and bonus finals, but if you truly want to be successful in the course DO NOT DO THIS. Really understand the material to the point where if you are asked the same type of question, but from different directions you will be able to solve it. Go to the back of Middleton library. They have a tutoring center and there are a few chemistry tutors that are extremely helpful. Don't get behind in the class. Study a little each day. Do the Webchem tutor practice problems that he has on his course website (a smart thing to do is divide the sections and say you will do this many problems a day)...this really helps. I did this for one exam and got an A..really makes a difference!

CHEM 1202
GENERAL CHEMISTRY
5*****
Pros: Amazing professor.

He tries very hard to help the students understand the material and is always available in office hours and welcomes questions during class.
Cons: None.
He has clicker questions, but if you want an A, you have to go to class anyway, so at least you get points for going to class.

There are "timed quizzes" on Webassign, but these are basically small homework assignments (5 questions, sometimes very easy) with a time limit that is much more time than you need to complete the assignment.

Bonus Exams are given for each test and add a little towards your final average. It can be the difference between two letter grades, but won't boost you very much.

He also replaces your lowest exam grade with the final exam grade if the final is higher. This can really help boost your grade if you bombed an exam.

CHEM 1201
GEN CHEMISTRY I
4****
Pros: J Hop is awesome and keeps the class interesting with his humor and analogies. He is clear and easy to understand and gives extra credit opportunities. There is a SI leader who holds review sessions. J Hop will allow you to master the material and prepare you well for succeeding courses.
Cons: He may be one of the hardest chemistry teachers. He assigns a lot of homework and quizzes which can be challenging.
I recommend taking J Hop if you are a science and/or engineering major. If you're just satisfying a pre-requisite, take Kolniak or another "easier" professor. I usually get "A"'s in my science classes and I got a 89 "B" in Chem 1201 with JHOP. I could have received an "A" if I had studied for the tests better-Do the problems without help from your notes and memorize the formulas!!!

CHEM 1201
GEN CHEMISTRY I
5*****
Pros: Fair grading. Very knowledgeable about the material. Clear explanations. Sells you his own notes with all that you will need for $30 (I didn't have any need to buy the actual textbook for the purposes of his class). Plenty of opportunity to do bonus exams.
Cons: None. Hopkins is challenging and it's necessary to put in a moderate amount of work into this class, but it is not at all overkill.
Hopkins is an outstanding chemistry professor. I came in with a very limited understanding of the basic chemistry principles and left the class thoroughly prepared for Chem 1202. Be prepared to work a reasonable amount and you will learn the material very well. If you attend class, actually do the homework, and do at least some of the bonus exams you'll be fine.

CHEM 1202
GENERAL CHEMISTRY
5*****
Pros: Pretty much everything about J. Hop in 1201 applies to J. Hop in 1202. Still sells notes for $30, which I thought was great. He knows the material extensively and is approachable and polite. Makes class entertaining with his stories and jokes, but never to the extent that it wastes time.
Cons: None, although the class is fairly challenging.
Chem 1202 is noticeably harder than Chem 1201 due to the material, but Hopkins is a terrific professor and a terrific guy in general. If you attend class, work the homework, and do at least some of the practice exams you should be fine.

Pros: He actually teachers well with great explanations. If you have questions he is flexible with office hours and is willing to help you with any confusion. There are bonus exams for every test so do well on those and that should help you in the final. The bonus exams count towards the final only.
Cons: There are no extra credit assignments.
Great teacher, you actually learn a lot. Also stay focused and don't give up!

CHEM 1201

Pros: He's very nice and approachable. Instead of a textbook, he has a binded one that he wrote, himself. So in class, we just go through that, and it makes it a lot easier.
Cons: on webasign, where we do our homework and take quizzes, I would forget what is due, and miss the date sometimes
With Hopkins, it is an easy class overall, you just have to put in A LOT of work

Pros: Love this man! Took him for 1201 and 1202! I failed chemistry in high school but thanks to him I know now everything there is about chemistry. There are tests every few weeks and of course homework on web assign. He's enthusiastic and is always willing to answer questions. If you have to take chemistry, TAKE HOPKINS!

Pros: He is very good at explaining the notes and wants his students to do well in the course.
Cons: There is A LOT of homework given and it is graded for correctness so take your time. Don’t get discouraged if you do bad on the first tests. I went from a low D to an A in the class because of the final and bonus points!
