Terrible, terrible teacher. Absolutely horrid as far as conveying material to the hundreds of poor students. If you think attending every class and doing all the work and paying attention is all it takes, you're wrong. The ONLY thing i will give him ...

Pros: He definitely knows what he's doing, and his goal is to breed a class of knowledgeable accountants.
Cons: He seems to forget this is the INTRO accounting class. I've never taken an accounting class in my life and he does not make it easy to pick up by lecture alone. Also, sometimes goes overtime, which makes me late to my next class.

WAY TOO HARD FOR AN INTRO CLASS.

I gave him a 2.0 because that's what I got. My grades normally constitute a 3.5. Way too much material packed into an intro class, so he had to move like lightning. He was very efficient, and I am impressed that some people understood it, considering we only had lecture/recitation 3 hours per week. I did WAY more work in this class than any of my 4 credit classes and I still only got a 2.0.

This class is not impossible, just hard. You cannot fall behind AT ALL. I started it thinking it would be mildly easy because my dad is an accountant, and I am relatively good at math-- WRONG. All I can say is that I liked calculus better and thought it was easier and contained less nonsense.

I am not an accounting or business major though. Accounting 201 is NOT a good class to take if you're not majoring in business/accounting/finance, etc. Also do not take if you want to see if you enjoy accounting.

You have to immediately read the book right from the start, do ALL the homework assignments, including the ones that you don't have to turn in, and will probably find yourself frequently going to the help rooms.

The only way I believe you could do well in this class, is to be an overachiever, have a knack for accounting, or genuinely enjoy the material.

Not just adding and subtracting, its a bunch of nonsense that you never cared about before and never will care about.

Just don't take this class.

His exams make you feel EXTREMELY bad. Doing homework, reading books could only get you partial points on the exam. So if you had time, read the book twice or three times before the exam and take good notes, which means you should write down every single details in the book and BUST your ASS OFF if you want a good grade. Only 20 questions on every exam, but most of them are FUCKING too hard. I don't think he wants the students to learn the fundamental accounting, he just wants you to learn how to deal with tricky questions on the exam.

I gave the low rating not because he was a bad guy, but because this was a HORRIBLE class. The title of the class is "Intro to Financial Accounting" but it is NOT an intro class. For someone like me who had never taken an accounting class before, it was absolutely impossible to do well. For someone who's only taken high school accounting, it's EXTREMELY difficult to do well. The course covers way too much material, when it should really only cover the basics. If you haven't mastered the adjusting journal entry stuff, you're not going to be able to time value of bonds, for example. He's a nice guy who seems to care about his students' future, but since the classes are around 500+ students, he can't really help you out, so you're stuck relying on your TA. If you're an accounting major and want to take him for a higher-level class, maybe that would be ok, but if you're any other major and just taking this class to fulfill your major requirements, TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE. If you take this class, all of your time MUST be spent studying this stuff (and who wants to spend all their time studying something like accountin?) and it will almost definitely destroy your GPA. I worked very hard in this class and got back little in return. Seriously, nice guy but just a nightmare of a class. If I had known, I would have taken it at LCC and transferred.

I'll start off by saying this class is extremely hard and challenging. With that being said Dr. B. runs his course much like a business, you either know the stuff and do well, or you fail. He will challenge students on quizzes and exams. You will have to apply what you learned to show how it affects a business.

A lot of people will say Dr. B is a bad teacher, which simply isn't true. With that being said if you don't have a solid grasp on all the information the exam questions will seem tricky.. when in reality they aren't too bad....I am in ACC 202 right now and would love to have Dr. B as my prof instead of Sue K...so enjoy the class while you can...

As far as studying for exams and quizzes.....first I would strongly suggest making flash cards for definitions and formulas...then study the course notes...then study the practice exams..repeat until you know all of that material...then if you have time read the book...a lot of people just open the book before anything and end up not understanding anything...so trust me and study the course notes first and make sure you know that course pack inside and out!!!!

Good luck...I took accounting in high school and worked my ass off last semester and got a 3.5....do work!

This class is a weeder class, no doubt. If you are taking this class as one of your reqs for the Business school...realize that you are going to have to work hard to do well in this class and there is NO way around it. Dr. B is a really good professor and usually has really fair curves. Take this from someone who had a really hard time in this class:

1) Make sure you read along with the lectures...it will definately help you understand his lectures alot better.

2) Go to the help room and take advantage of the SA's help...they really are helpful.

3) Make sure you don't copy your homework- DO IT..it actually helps you.

4) Don't put off things for this class- if you fall behind once..it's definately not easy to get back up. Start reading along from day 1

5) Don't skip lecture- it is VERY helpful. it actually helps if you sit up really close cuz then you don't get distracted.

6) Make a study group/don't be afraid to get a tutor. This class is the most known for the most amount of people getting tutors! MBS has free tutoring so make sure you register for it at their website at www.bus.msu.edu/mbs

Good luck...there is no easy way out for this class, make it easier on yourself by keeping up from the beginning.

Pros: Passionate
Cons: Intimidating
I've never met someone so passionate about something most of the world seems to find so uninteresting. This fact along with his professional attitude and genuine tough love concern for his students knowledge of the material, helps keep you motivated. The class is a lot of work but if you attend all lectures, read the chapters (especially helpful if you read them before the lectures they cover), and follow along in your course book, you'll be alright. If you do these things, and don't slack off you'll leave the class with a solid grade and a firm understanding of the topics covered.

Dr. B is a great professor. The class is very challenging, but he does a great job at teaching it. Sure he doesn't crack jokes or whatever, but he truly wants everyone to learn the material. He pushes you to do your best, so using old study habits that might have worked in the past probably won't work in this class, but you earn whatever grade you receive. Go to the help room and review sessions also.

Bottom line is if you want to be challenged, yet taught by a great professor, choose Dr. B.

Dr. B is an EXCELLENT, straightforward professor. This class surely is NOT an easy 4.0...you have to work hard...it's not like university required courses where you can usually find easy professors. Some people do poorly in this class-- some of these people try hard, but just don't understand the material--others are just lazy and probably don't belong in the business collegea anyway...i think this is a weeder class and this is why it is required for admission to the business college.

I want to say you will learn A LOT in this class because Dr. B does "raise the bar" by having high expectations, as was said in an earlier post. It will also point out what your strengths/weakenesses are in the business area.

I also agree with another comment in a post, which said after taking this class you will feel a sense of accomplishment. This class will force you to work hard in order to come out with a good grade in the end. This course's material will challenge you. His quiz/exam questions do sometimes have twists, which can make quizzes/exams tricky (evidence: class avg of 60% on quizzes/exams), but you should do fine if you study (and study ALL THE MATERIAL)

As to what was said in the previous post, I do not agree that the sample quizzes/exams will help you for the actual quizzes/exams. Dr. B will say that they are the types of questions that could appear on quizzes/exams, but it's not like the concepts on the practice questions are the ones that will appear on actual quizzes/exams. For example, if you see a specific question about working capital, it is unlikely you will see an actual question on working capital on the quiz/exam.

So all in all, this class is a lot of work. To be successful, I recommend reading the textbook before lecture, looking at the hw posted on ANGEL and reading over the coursebook before quizzes/exams.

Good job Dr. B for having high expectations and preparing hard working students for the business college!

Alright i read all these all msu things before I took this class and I still did bad. I study my tail off got a 13/20 on the first exam so from there I couldnt get a 3.5. Anyone whos a freshmen and reading this take this at a community college, anyone whos a first semester sophomore ride the bus to lcc and take this class lol. if your second semester u still could go to lcc but it will be cold as shit outside, JUST IF YOU ARENT A PERSON WHO HAS OVER A 3.5 GPA at msu you are going to put all your life into this class. THE FIRST half is easy then the second material just gets so hard to understand. BOND i never thought that would be difficult to understand. JUST TAKE MY WORD FOR IT. BOKEMEIR IS A COOL DUDE tho doesnt make him be a great teacher. Which he is not, He could be a rapper. Sometimes he talks so fast i swear he doesnt even know what he says. Thats why hes always correcting himself. You have to scan your cards everyday and click throughtout the class and at the end. Lol this class is not for slacker, people who get by, people who study last min, or retards. this is for brillant minds who loves to read chapters be to class 20 mins, review notes over and over again,You can play catchup in this class either, The ta wont make or break your grade. But if your looking for a great one Eric dennet is a great one because he knows so much about acct he was the only upside to the class no homo on that. If he had made the test and instead of dr b who trys to trick u with he questions that have is ab or abc or a. Or with his use of increasing or decreasing in all his questions. Now I didnt do well in this class so maybe you should ask someone who did well. And try to get an honest answer out of them.

Here's the deal. If you want someone to entertain you and make you giggle and jump across the room and make weird noises, you won't like Bokemeier.

If, on the other hand, you want to actually be challenged, learn some useful applications, and push yourself, Bokemeier is your man.

He's very honest and truthful and is very morale and cares about his students. He will lay everything out for you on day 1 and wont' deviate from it. He will cut right to the important aspects of the material and go into extreme detail (sometimes more than he needs) just because he wants to give you a firm base of accounting. If you are a future accounting major, when you get into ACC300 you will love Bokemeier, as many of those "smaller details" will be used there.

Many students mistake this class for a math based course, which is about numbers and journal entries and balances. Not farther from the truth. Go into ACC201 as if it's a method of thinking and logic. Accounting is a very practical, logical system. Treat it as such and you will find the test questions get easier. My biggest suggestion is to make sure you truly understand WHAT you are doing (kids often screw up at this).

Head to his office hours if you are at all interested in accounting. He can and will give good guidance and (despite what you think from him in lecture) he will open up and be very friendly.

bokemeier is one smart dude. really knows his stuff. homework is EASYYY i got it off here every thursday night. quizes are ehhhhh but his tests kill you. theyre tricky...like, each multiple choice answer makes sense if you do the problem a certain way. i.e. you forget a step...whatever answer that would give you is an actual choice. so you really have to make sure you did it right before bubbling it in ya know...also, quiz/tests questions were all multiple choice and EACH was worth 4 points. the quizzes (2) had 10 questions apiece..worth 40 points. if you miss a couple its like hi bad grade. tests (2) are same way..20 questions each worht 4 points = 80 points. he gives samples quizzes and exams on angel and omg omg omg DOOOO THEMMM seriously i didnt for the first test...did bad....i worked on them for the ssecond...totally improved. he doesnt take the same questiosn or anything but he uses a lot of the same concepts that are on the samples. do them, its so important. oh yea and he curves the shit outta this class, so dont freak out. the curve is better if youre doing worse in the class (higher ranges for grades whereas the range of pts for 4.0, 3.5 students was pretty narrow) take this guy! youll learn a lot!

Dr. Bokemeier is a good class. I depend on allmsu to choose classes, so I will give an unbiased opinion. A lot of people don't like him, because he doesn't give out candy and kiss ass. He is very smart, relatively harsh-voiced, and presents the material very fast-paced- however, very fair. Go to class, don't fall behind. You'll regret it if you skip more than a few classes. Dr. B just raises the bar. He expects a lot from his students- but only what he shuld expect. HE wants you to UNDERSTAND the concepts, not just memorize. In business, it is ABSOLUTELY fundamental to understand how one thing affects something else. This class will give you such a sense of accomplishment when you complete it. You'll be so glad that he prepped your thinking patterns that way he does. It has helped me to be an overall better studier and get to the bottom line in all of my other classes. I took this class with 17 credits, and never did the uncollected homework assignments, so it is not impossible. I'm at a 3.5/4.0 right now. Apply yourself, go to class, do the practice exams, learn his style, and understand the stuff. You'll do great.

Dr. B is a good measuring tool for your stupidity. If you like him, chances are you are not stupid. If you don't like him, chances are you are. Why?

Well, if you actually say you don't like him, it's because you see in lecture he is cold. You don't understand the concepts in the course because they are tough, and you don't see the point of accounting. You also don't like his test writing because you must work for a grade, instead of someone like Ballard (EC201) where you just get a grade. These are reasons for being stupid, and reasons for not liking him as such.

Reasons for liking him are seeing through his cold side and realizing it's either a front or because he doesn't let himself be brought down by what others thing about him. Or, becuase he takes the material so seriously he wants to deliver it directly, which is a good thing. You will also see a very intelligent man, with a nice dry sense of humor that can be appreciated. Finally, you will see someone who knows what the hell they are talking about.

There's the truth..you are either stupid or not and this class will help you determine that.

Okay listen. All the previous posts about how he is the greatest professor of all time and so on is a little bit ridiculous. I do agree that this class is difficult, it is a weed out class for business college students. There has to be one hard class when you take EC 201 with Ballard and college algebra for your pre-core. I just got my grade report back and 3.5'd the class. I can also honestly say I've never worked so hard for a grade my entire life. Granted, Dr. B does know what he's talking about, he's very knowledgeable and the course is well organized. The only reason I'm giving him a 3.0 is because I thought the final, unlike the previous quizzes and exams, was well written and bullshit-free. He says he's not trying to trick you, but there are so many questions throughout the course on quizzes and tests that are just that. So my advice: go to every single class, especially Friday recitation, and READ THE BOOK. Do all the book problems that are optional and a good grade is possible, just study your ass off. Dr. B is a good guy, the exams and quizzes are the worst.

See, the whole problem these people are having with Bokemeier is that "he stresses accounting too much and that's not my major" coupled with "I'm not an accounting major so I shouldn't have to go this detailed into it and the demand he puts on me concerning it is unfair."

Well..two things, especially to that last point. If you nod your head to the second thing in quotes, get out of the business college. Why? The business college will tell you, they are a LIBERAL ARTS business school, in that they FORCE ALL BUSINESS STUDENTS to take the business core (accounting/finance/economics/management/supplychain/ etc). They want you to take it all and go into some detail with it all because it will prepare you for specialized study in any of those fields via graduate school or via a real job. It's an excellent philosophy to be well versed in all aspects of business, YES, that includes accounting.

Thus, Bokemeier is just doing his job. Don't be upset at him for that, or because he doesn't make this a free 4.0.

It really depends on what kind of person you are if you're going to do well in this class or not. If you're organized, very good at critical/logical thinking, and like math, then you should do OK and find it easy. If not, this class will definitely be hard.

The thing is that you just have to study - study everything. I got a 4.0 by going to every single class, checking every single homework at the homework help room, and asking questions whenever there was something I didn't understand. You MUST ask questions if you don't get it, and MUST study for the quizzes/exams. One thing I would have liked to know is that you have to memorize all the equations and definitions. I did poorly on the first quiz because I didn't realize how important that would be.

Bokemeier is a good teacher (in my opinion). He is a bit fast though, so you have to pay attention throughout the whole class (which can be difficult). I mean, ACC is boring to pretty much everyone, so don't expect much.

Here's how this works...If you're a business major, you have to take this class. Bokemeier was the only prof teaching my semester, so you have to deal with what you get. He's a good guy and really wants you to learn the material. The fact is, the class is very challanging.

My tips - go to every single lecture (you scan ids for attendance anyways, so go get something out of it), go to every recitation (in class pts are needed), read the textbook (or do the practice hw during the week), and go to the helproom whenever you have questions (you will get the help you actually need to hear). This class takes time and hard work, but its managable, and if you stick with it you really will learn something.

The curve ends up being fairly decent, about 2-4% at the end of the semester with a 4 point swing under that for grade bumps. Overall Bokemeier is a pretty good professor, its just that the class is really hard. Stick with it, and good luck
