WORST, MOST POINTLESS CLASS OF ALL TIME. Simply an excuse for the university to reach into your pockets and take $800.

This class is aimed at idiots who didn't learn anything from high school, middle school, or even 5th grade. I seriously feel this should be in a Middle school curriculum. The fact that it is the stupidest, most useless class at MSU does not make it easy. The workload is huge, and none of the TA's (who have full control of your grade) know what they're doing.

Honestly, the smarter you are the worse you'll do. Turn in a stupid page of grammatical nonsense that address the topic somewhere verbatim, and you'll get full points. Turn in a concise, well written paragraph that address the topic (but doesn't actually state it), and you'll get maybe half credit.

This class has robbed me of time and money, and don't see why every entering engineer has to take it. Good luck to any poor souls who take it next year.

Yes the class is pointless, and yes the TA's have most of the grading power but if you are willing to actually work with your TA and find out what went wrong you will have a good outcome. Most TA's grade hard, but they do it to prepare you because from here the engineering classes get harder, and there will hardly be any room for error. After all the class is super easy it just requires a little extra push if you have a difficult TA. When it comes to reading the material for lecture I never read, and I still managed to pull a 4.0. Most of the information is common sense, and if you don't know the answer to the clicker quiz believe me somebody around in your area does.

This class is mostly pointless and they make you do a bunch of stupid papers. This class is only 2 credits and even though the stuff that they give you is easy there is a lot of volume and should be worth at least 3 or 4 credits

Pros: Could bring your GPA up?

shouldn't be tough to get a 4.0 or at least a 3.5
Cons: This class is a waste of time but required

2 group projects, freshmen course so your group will likely be terrible
This class is a waste of your time but its suppose help you become a bit more informed about what a career in engineering would involve. However, they give lectures on common sense things for example, this year there was an hour lecture on how units are important ( to calculate the amount of gasoline a persons car would consume in one year, you would not need to include the number of chickens that person owns into calculation)

You don't need to take notes on lecture. There are clicker quizzes that are more of an attendance grade because if you get them wrong you will get most of the points anyway.

This is a freshmen course for engineering majors and you participate in two projects that are 20% and 30% of your grade so don't screw it up! My group managed to forget to turn in multiple assignments so STAY ON TOP OF THEM. They are freshmen and this will likely be their worst semester of their entire college career, so if you dont want them to screw up your gpa make sure they do their work.

Also this class has the absolute worst ANGEL set up I have ever seen and its pathetic because they do this class every year.

Final is easy, 50 % of people get an A, 41% get a B and the rest are just morons

Hinds is a really nice guy, and is always willing to adjust his class' test schedules around other classes. His tests are straight -- they don't change much from previous semesters either (but they are at least slightly different). He is extremely knowledgable about anything to do with industry and focuses on real world stuff - which made the class interesting. Plus, he is always willing to help out and answer questions. The only problem that I had with him is that I don't think he chooses his Top 3 (on Design Day) very well. My group won the 3rd place for our class, but I saw projects from the other class that I thought were extremely well engineered (supposedly the basis for the Top 3) that were left out. Granted, I will give Hinds some credit, as I have no idea what he actually uses to judge the projects. As an overall teacher, he does a great job though (he flies through lecture, but all the slides are online - I would definately recommend printing them out, so you can just sit and listen in class).

Pros: - Easy class, should be able to 4.0 no problem

- Nice guy stuck teaching a useless course.
Cons: - Class is absolutely useless.

- 60% of your grade comes from team projects, so if you have a bad team you're in trouble.

- clicker quizzes every lecture
This class is absolutely useless, all the material is common knowledge. I finished the final in literally 15 minutes, and got a 4.0 in the class. The lectures were all absolutely useless, and do not under any circumstances buy the book!!! My friend who took the class the previous semester warned me not to but I bought it anyway, and while the clicker quizzes were based on the book, most people just googled the answers or asked people next to them. The vast majority of the answers were common knowledge anyway. Hinds is a pretty nice guy though, he understands most people probably don't care and are asleep in lecture anyway, but he tries to make it interesting. I don't feel justified in giving him more than a 3 though because the class was so pointless.

This is class is annoying. You get a s*** load of work and the class is only 2 credits. I do more work in this class than in all of my classes put together. You have to do executive summaries, or some kind of technical document every week concurrently with a group project. There are no breaks in between the group projects, as soon as your done with one...there's another in the angel lessons folder. REAL TALK! The lectures are retarded, you have to purchase a iClicker to answer questions such as "How many of you guys uploaded your resume" or "Which professor's hair looks better".

This class is a requirement for engineering majors and it is totally easy to pass...just establish a good group during the first project and you'll get through it.

Pros: This class is very straight forward.

Hinds is really nice, but his once a week lectures are always about really obvious things and it is impossible to stay focused the whole time.
Cons: He will say something in class once that you won't think is very important, but will end up being very important information.
Lectures are very easy, 50 minutes of Hinds talking about the book that you should already know. The lab is a little harder. You have to check angel every week. You will have weekly homework for both the lecture and lab. You have to read the entire message because there are usually multiple things due for each week. Lab projects are easy and there are only 2. Minimal work, but you have to meet frequently.

I had him for 100 and 102 in the same semester. For 100: the class is dumb either way, it isn't Hinds's fault. It is also ridiculously easy. The only reason for not having a 4.0 is never coming to class and never doing your projects. For 102: At first I complained because the lecture was so boring, but I learned how much I liked Hinds once he had health issues and we were stuck with Mukkamala instead. Hinds explains the material well and provides you with notes that are actually legible. If you read the notes then the homework was easy because he laid it all out for you. I really didn't mind the class when he was teaching it, as oppose to really disliking it once he left. Take Hinds.

Hinds is a great guy. He really tries to understand his students. He is very helpful, and will let you turn in assignments late if you forget them occasionally.

I was part of the pilot EGR 102 class. The class is very easy until the last three weeks when the final project is assigned. The project was poorly explained, which led to mass confusion. Ask your main TA a lot of questions and they'll be able to answer them. The other ones didn't know shit about the project. Hopefully they'll clear things up on the final project in the future. It was graded easily. They were open to many different solutions for the problem. Don't worry about it too much.

Wow people are rating the class, not the teacher. To start out, yes it is a POINTLESS CLASS. But you need to take it. It not hard at all, easy easy 4.0. Hinds is a nice, cool guy. You have an i-clicker quiz every week and they are the easiest things ever. Never once read and i still new the answers. Its all either opion question (so no matter what answer you put, you get it right) or completely common sense (you should not be an engineer if you dont know them). Yes it is pointless and you dont learn anything, but its easy and Hinds is a nice guy. People need to stop giving him 0.0's when its the class that is pointless, not Hinds.

this class absolutely sucks. the material covered in class has nothing to do with the actual pratice of engineering its only covering how to present something to a business group. this class was the biggest waste of time in the world. and for the prof, he sucks. he is a nice guy as a preson but his teaching ability is terrible and the book for the class is cluttered and confusing. he wrote the book and is $50 new and is a couple hundred pages that could be condensed into a 30-40 page packet. most of the material in this book is just telling you about past scientists and their accomplishments. class is a total waste of time.

EGR 100 is a terrible class! But hopefully over time it will be refined into something that is actually useful.

The problem: You will learn next to nothing.

I thought that it had a very light work load though. If you actually stay in your lab for 30 minutes to an hour, you can get any homework done in class.

I think Mr. Hinds is a good professor stuck with a blah class. He is really nice if you get to know him. I had my chance to do this the day of the midterm when my alarm clock literally stopped working (I had to buy a new one later that day). He let me take the exam even though I had completely missed it.

The class is worth 2 credits but you do the work for 5 !! NO JOKE. You get assigned a million POINTLESS assignments in lab (which is where all your grade comes from) and its all graded by TA's. Your grade is controlled by STUPID TA's !! & its bullshit. Its a TON of work outside class which becomes really annoying because half of it is group work.

ADVICE: the lecture is completely pointless. Split the lectures between you and a friend and then alternate going to lecture taking each others iclicker. Dr. Hinds taught 2 of our lectures THATS IT and had guest speakers for the rest.

Nice guy and seems to know what he's talking about....as for the class, biggest waste of my life ever!!! One of the lectures consisted of learning that sitting in a straight line talking isn't as productive as sitting in a circle. I'm sorry I thought I was paying a lot of money to learn something about my future career not something we learned in elementary school. TA has complete grading power and if one person decides not to do anything and tells you at 6 a.m before the project is due they didn't do their part you all get screwed over because of one idiot.

This class isn't hard but the TA's suck. They barely explain the material then expect you to perform well on the exams. Hind's never checks the work so he can't even explain to you why you were graded horribly. The material that is covered in lecture have NOTHING to do with the lab. It's like taking two totally different classes. The lab assistant's are cool and they help out as much as possible. Overall this class was a waste of my time and money but it's required so I would take Hind's again ONLY because it's required, not because he's a good professor.

He's a pretty straightforward guy and he is willing to help you get what you need. This class really isn't much work at all... the other people who posted just aren't being productive in the lab. Lectures are very basic, but it's a good as an intro class. Assignments are done in less than half an hour and the three projects over the semester require basic group work. I'd like to see what the people below say about this class after they take a few other engineering classes. If you go to class and put in minimal effort you will easily 3.5 or 4.0.

Pros: EASY.
Cons: iclicker questions for nearly every lecture, NEED to check email and angel.
Lecture is boring but easy. The only point of going to class is to get the iclicker points, which turns our is 10% of your grade. Lab is just as easy... you need to write a couple of papers, and thats pretty much it.

HARD PART IS KEEPING TRACK OF WHATS GOING ON!!!! There is no schudule, so the only way you find out about homework is through angel and by email. Homework is so easy its stupid, but its worth a decently large portion of your so make sure you do it.

This class was the biggest waste of time. I transferred here from CMU and had an introductory engineering class but that didn't transfer so I had to take this class. At least at CMU we learned something and had a fun project. All this class taught me was MSU will suck as much money out of you as possible. There is honestly nothing to learn from this class. I dont know how there can be an exam. Not unless we get tested on which degree program we find the most interesting. I think everyone who has ever taken this class deserves a refund.
