There are no words to describe how I feel about this guy. 4.0 isn't a high enough grade for Professor Madden. I've heard his peers (other band directors) call him the best band director in the country. He's the very best, and he's the driving force that makes the Spartan Marching Band the very best.



Aside from class stuff - The things that you learn from John T. Madden will follow you for the rest of your life. Far beyond the marching field. You won't meet a more caring, genuine, and wonderful person in your life.



Incredible professor, positively great guy. If you EVER have the opportunity to play in one of his ensembles - jump on it. You won't regret it, I promise.

AMAZING!! That is the only word I can say to descibe the marching band and Mr. Madden. If only all professors could be as talented, awesome, and as nice as him! He knows how to work the last bit of energy out of us when the week comes to an end, but at the same time he makes everything so fun and enjoyable. This is my first year in my band and I the next 3 are just as enjoyable and fun!



I vote JTM as the NEW Spartan Football Coach!!

Pros: Madden is an AMAZING instructor. He's a talented musician who is truly passionate about everything the marching band does. He's a huge part of the SMB and it's clear that he loves what he does.
Cons: We move through drill fast and his expectations are really high. Those aren't exactly cons but they tend to frustrate people sometimes.

JTM likes diet coke!!

Honestly, he is amazing!! Whether it's on the field teaching or just talking to about life, he is a great guy to be around!

If this guy doesn't inspire you to do your best in all areas of life as well as spark your inner spartan spirit, then you didn't pay attention enough in band.

He loves this band. He was in it, now he directs it, and it's one of the best in the country. He's not a tyrant (we've got someone else to handle the yelling) and he's a good guy. The shows just will not be as good when he leaves Michigan State. Anyone who disagrees has a major chip on their shoulder.

madden makes marching band a great time. he motivates everyone to work hard while still being this great, lovable guy. He is amazing with remembering names and faces and even your audition details. he's super passionate, having once marched in the band himself. an overall amazing professor.

As everyone has said, Mr. Madden is an important and amazing part of why the band is as great as it is now. I think what is truly remarkable is that he some how gets to know who everyone in the band is in some way (which is saying a lot for a 300 person ensemble).

What is there to say about this guy that hasn't already been said? What a great director, professor and friend. Anything you need, he'll help you with. Great sense of humor and very passionate about music. Even if you aren't in the band you can admire this man.

madden is amazing. coming in as a freshman being in the atmosphere of a big ten band is enough. having him as a prof has helped the transition, he's a lot nicer than my old teacher too. i wish him the best and think that the smb kicks ass!

The most incredible, humble, caring, talented, and genuine person you may ever meet in your lifetime. I wouldn't trade my experience with JTM in the SMB for anything. Amazing person. Giving him a 4.0 rating is not high enough.

Mr. Madden is an awesome director, teacher, prof... you name it. He is so approachable and open to what other people have to think and say. As a freshman, he made you feel welcome and proud to be a part of this university.

Madden is one of the most genuine guys you will ever meet. He legitimately cares about every one of his students, and he makes sure that you know it. He's awesome.

Great guy to march under - he knows his stuff and is very experienced here. Also just a really nice guy, but makes sure we're not slacking off (who would want to, anyways?) I love the Daddy Rabbit!
