The textbook is optional. If you're an ANS major, he recommends you buy the book so you can learn the material in depth (you'll need it for later classes) but if you're not an ANS major, you don't have to buy the book. He teaches well enough that you won't need it.
Instead of the textbook, the lab handouts and readings online will be significantly more important. Almost all of his test questions come from lecture or online readings because he knows that not everyone purchased the textbook.
Pros:
Prof. Famula is absolutely amazing. He is super enthusiastic about teaching Animal Science. He knows how to engage the students even when the lectures hold over 100 students.
He loves to tell students quirky stories about the animals he's worked with and he's worked with a LOT of animals.
Fun, and exciting, this has been one of the few classes where I've seen other students actually WANT to go to class.
He does all he can to try to accommodate students by uploading audio recordings of his lectures, visiting the SmartSite chat room to discuss topics with students as well as uploading helpful videos and handouts online for the labs.
Cons:
He does not have any .ppt presentations, instead he writes all his notes on the chalkboard. I suggest you sit up front a bit, because his handwriting can get crazy when he's worked up in lecture.

Pros: Only two fairly easy mid-terms and the final. The two essay papers are fun to research and don't have to have much prior knowledge to get an A. Famula is always at the top of his game during lecture, never a dull moment. Presents lots of great information. He will make you want to keep coming to class and will make lecture the highlight of your day.
Cons: Sometimes you just don't want lecture to end.
Most amazing lecture, lab, and professor at UC Davis. You can not call yourself a true Aggie until you have experienced the feeling of a cow udder in your hand. Highly recommend!

Pros: enthusiastic, friendly
funny
loves his subject
Cons: none!
Fun class! Great for ANS majors and non majors as well. Gives you a chance to explore the world of domesticated animals with content AND actual animals! class is not hard at all if you study for the midterms and finals. Labs are easy as well.. depending on how much you study. But this is not a class that you would stress too much about if you are on track. (:
