CHM 2045L
GENERAL CHEMISTRY LAB
3***
Pros: Labs are pretty easy and easy to get an A with all the extra points given out. But all work is done with TA's not Horvath so never actually met him.

CHM 2045L
GENERAL CHEMISTRY LAB
3***
Pros: The labs are usually very easy and depending on the TA, you sometimes don't even have to do them. My TA answered all of our questions we had. If you do well on all of the assignments, you won't need to take the final exam.
Cons: The labs can be quite time consuming and it sucks standing on your feet for the labs when you construct models.
Horvath himself has a different personality, very dry. Don't ask him stupid questions and you'll be fine. You never even see him in the lab.

Pros: no pros. this class with horvath is death!
Cons: exams are terrible!
not really sure how i passed this class. his exams are the worst. he speaks in gibberish in class and his notes are impossible to decipher. do not take him if you are only okay in chemistry because he goes into detail on subjects that nobody else does

Pros: You get to work in a group. If you are finished with the lab early, then you can go home.
Cons: The labs can be a bit challenging if you don't read the discussions ahead of time.

If you have a nice TA, the class is very easy. Extra credit on most labs. Can exempt the final exam if you already have an A.

GEN CHEM & QUAL ANALY
1*
Pros: -he's enthusiastic

-its a class...u learn stuff
Cons: -he's worse at teaching then the book, but insists on not using it

-harder to learn the actual material with his teaching methods

-makes problems unnecessarily hard, doesn't really ask the normal problems you see in textbooks, always tries to go beyond that

-uses confusing formulas

-lots of important info missing from his printed class notes that you need, so if you missed that day forget it

-arrogant to the point of being frequently unhelpful

-runs class late

-inflexible to the needs of others
5hrs for each exam (given in two parts on two days)...for 4 exams. For a 2000 level class, this is crazy. Definitely makes things unnecessarily hard. His notes are written more poorly than the text and don't contain the answers to many key problems as they should. The result is that its HARD to learn the material doing it his way. It seems that he's there more for himself than for the students. He'd make an interesting add-on commentator at the end of someone else doing a lecture for the 'challenge' segment, but I would not recommend him, ever.

Pros: FORCES you to learn
Cons: The HARDEST class I've ever taken. The exams take what you learn and make you think "outside of the box". I wasn't even aware that we were dealing with boxes much less that we had to think out of them, that's how far fetched most of the questions seemed.
For summer, write as much as you can possibly think of for each question, and fight for points if the TA's don't give you what you think you deserve. You will live in the library studying for this exam and probably do cartwheels if you're able to get at least a C. The first exam's average was was 44% and the second exam only improved to a 58%. Work your butt off for the final, and maybe you'll end up with an A.

My suggestion, despite the fact that you will learn a lot, it's not worth the stress.

Pros: He's enthusiastic about chemistry.

You will actually learn somethings in this class.
Cons: He doesn't use the textbook (and actually hates any general chemistry textbook) so you have no other useful (for his tests) source of info., which brings me to the second point.

His notes SUCK. They are so hard to understand.

The exams are ridiculously hard. Like beyond hard.
I took in Summer 2011 so the exams were free-response instead of multiple choice, which is what they are in the fall and spring. I would recommend taking someone else because, though I learned a lot, this class killed my GPA (I got a C).

Pros: You work by yourself. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities...that is if you work reallly fast and you get to those assignments. However, even if you don't you can gain quite a few points from the final which is similar to the one posted in sakai.
Cons: The lab book is poorly written. You have to spend quite a bit of time reading the discussions just to get an idea what is going on in the experiments.
I absolutely hated this class. However, I was fortunate enough to get a caring TA who helped me understand the material better, so I can prepare for the unknowns.

GENERAL CHEMISTRY LAB
3***
Pros: Horvath isnt really the professor, since it's a lab. You deal with Horvath if you have a problem, otherwise its just the TA.
Cons: Labs were pretty hard and tiring.
Class is required for many, so it's not like a recommendation really matters. Come to the lab prepared.

Pros: He seemed to be friendly the one time I saw him in his room.
Cons: He was never present around lab and didn't seem interested in taking part in any way. He used his TA's for that.
I haven't seen enough of Horvath to really rate his teaching style.

Pros: Really will know Chemistry when finished.

Cheap textbook.
Cons: Will take up hours a day.

Exams are ridiculous.

Has his own book that he teaches from.

Avoid Horvath unless your goal is to master chemistry. His exams are really difficult.

I can't really judge Horvath because although he is the coordinator of the lab, he is not the actual person teaching it. The difficulty of the class is pretty hard. Get to know your TA's. That might help a little.

Pros: Some extra credit is given. The final helped alot of people get an A, including me.

Pros: The Professor does not bother you in any way
Cons: I have no idea who the professor is.
This is a lab, so the person teaching you is actually a TA. No interaction with the professor is necessary.
