BIOL 1103 - CONCEPTS IN BIOLOGY
This course is a great way to fill your Life Science requirement. It is not a difficult class and with a little bit of effort a desirable grade is achievable.
Pros: The material is very basic and simplified. He understands that the course is geared towards non-Science majors and does his best to teach accordingly.

The tests are based off of lectures and book readings. He gives study questions after each lecture. Each of the quizzes are based off of the study questions-- Look over them beforehand.
Cons: If you are not naturally gifted in Science related subjects, this class is not as easy as it should be. The lectures can get to be a bit boring.

Dr. Barstow is a very nice man and tells wonderful stories, but his class is boring. Nothing against the man personally, but the hour goes by really slow during his powerpoints. Granted, some classes are better than others because we'll watch "Youtubes" or he'll tell a funny story. Tests are pretty hard and really the only way to do really good on them is to READ READ READ.

Dr. Barstow is a solid teacher in general. He communicates pretty clearly and tends to make the class more interesting than not with a few quirky jokes. Sometimes he warms the class up with a short video before beginning his lecture. However, he can sometimes loose track of time a little bit. On a few points (for instance when describing the Krebs cycle in cellular respiration) he confessed minor gaps in his knowledge and understanding of the material.

This is a science course for non science majors, so this class isn't going to be that challenging. It covers basic biology topics covered in high school, such as photosynthesis, ATP, mitosis, meiosis, etc. As long as you read the chapters and understand the concepts and few important details, there are no tricks on the tests. He doesn't try to trick you on the tests.

He does try to help students out with extra credit quizzes he randomly gives out during class. So come to class. There are no homework assignments. You will need to read the book a few days before the tests, but other than that, nothing to be worried about. Easy A if you study for the tests.

Pros: attendance bonus points, youtube videos, easy quizzes and lowest dropped, posts powerpoints of notes
Cons: memorization, requires some reading if you don't catch on immediately
Dr. Barstow is the cutest, sweetest teacher. He is a precious little man. Half way through class he will play popular youtube videos. He is very easy to talk to, willing to help if you are confused, and pretty easy to follow. His lectures are pretty boring, but they are worth going to to get the bonus points. If you are willing to do memorization, which I would imagine you would have to for any Biology class, he is a great teacher to take. His tests are not difficult if you study the material, which does take alot of time, mind you. I definitely recommend.

Pros: Dr. Barstow's lectures were the highlight of each day this semester. He is funny, interesting, and one of the nicest guys ever. He randomly gives extra credit for evaluations and attendance, this extra credit ended up adding up to like 20 points it was awesome. And as long as you spend an average amount of time studying the study questions he writes the tests are easy.
Cons: None I can think of. He is awesome!
Take him!

Pros: Hilarious, he really cares about this subject, willing to help. Posts powerpoint on Elc, very helpful to go over. Breaks up lectures with youtube videos!
Cons: His quizzes add up, so study for them too even though they are only 5 questions!
Definitely read the textbook! Also, go over the study questions from Elc every night, they will prepare you for the test.

Pros: The exams are easy if you read the chapters and pay attention in lecture. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities.
Cons: Attendance is imperative.
Dr. Barstow and Dr. Dervartanian are really great professors. This class took a lot time, but it is not difficult if you put in the time.

Pros: Class is somewhat helpful for MCAT.

Plenty of old test questions are used.
Cons: Lots of information to cover. Tests are tricky and the final is pretty difficult.

Lab is a complete waste of time and more than likely depends on your TA.

Pros: Barstow is pretty nice guy, who knows his stuff. He likes to occasionally make jokes to lighten the mood. He also likes to show videos (or "YouTubes" as he calls them) once in a while, and most of them aren't even biology related, they're just funny.
Cons: The worst part was that Barstow split the class up into segments where one of his colleagues, Dr. Farmer, taught and typed up a few tests on his own. So, for a few chapters, we had Barstow, then Farmer, then Barstow again, and that was hard to get used to. The tests are pretty hard, I must say. You'll have to read a LOT. The questions are often designed to trick you. The average scores tend to be pretty low. Coming to class helps a little though. The class itself is really boring. I found myself nearly falling asleep several times. Maybe that's just me, though.
About attendance: it isn't mandatory, but you will definitely want to come for 2 reasons. One is that some test material isn't in the book, and is only covered in lecture. Two: if you miss his random attendance days (which usually are on days when it's raining, or, like, the day before spring break or something) 3 times, you won't get the opportunity to use the final exam to your advantage. What I mean is, if you have a C coming into the final, and you study hard and get a B, he'll raise your final average up to a whole letter grade higher, but ONLY if you missed class less than 3 times.

Pros: He is cute and funny and shows youtube videos to breakdown lectures. Attendance quizzes add up for bonus points.
Cons: Class is FOREVER long and boring, you can barely hear him, lectures have no relevance to tests, quizzes are only five questions but you have to study for hours to get down the concepts, test questions are obscure.
Okay seriously all of these comments don't do this class justice. This is probably the most boring class I have ever taken. I study for hours and still get no higher than an 80 on the tests. He words the answers to the quizzes and tests so confusingly that it's impossible to know the right answer. Everyone I know struggles with this class because there is so much information to know for the tests. Although Barstow is a better teacher, take Brickman if you really care about your GPA.

Pros: he knows no one cares about his class.

all lectures are posted online so if you read the book/the power points you're good.
Cons: watch out for Dr. Farmer coming in as a guest lecture because he will absolutely make your life a living hell.

class is super boring

takes attendance frequently which ends up as bonus points towards the final grade.

no computers

grades are based on a point system
take this class over Brickman's because you don't have to do any group work nonsense. Just read the book/powerpoints and come to class for attendance and you'll be good. if Dr Farmer comes in as a guest lecturer, make sure you come to every class and write down like everything because his exams are analytical and impossible. on the first test, class average was a 58/90....

Pros: Dr. Barstow is the sweetest!!!!! He is always open for you to talk to him during his office hours, or even if you have a question in class. He really knows a lot about Biology and takes a lot of time into creating his lectures.
Cons: Test are medium difficulty IF you read ALL the chapters and do ALL the study questions that he gives you. Attendance is NOT mandatory, but does reflect on your grades, because a lot of the things he says in lecture he likes to put on the tests.
Grade is based on 6 tests and final. Grade on final can replace an old test if average is higher. Attendance is taken randomly and is used for extra points that you can put towards your final grade.

Pros: He gives lots of quizzes which help with your grade and he also provides study questions at the end of every lecture to keep you studying in between exams. You don't have to do the questions, but they really help.
Cons: Class is pretty boring, he makes some lame jokes but it was overall a boring class. You are not allowed to use your computer in this class.
I took Brickman and ended up dropping her class. Barstow keeps things simpler and much more basic. If you are not good with biology I would recommend Barstow. It helps a lot if you go to class. A lot of times you will get extra points just for showing up. He is very willing to help if you go to his office hours.

Pros: All tests are scantron, so if you are good at multiple choice questions the class isn't difficult.
Cons: Seems to be scared of technology, randomly went off at people for using their laptops. Also didn't seem to care that people were cheating on the quizzes he would give. In lectures he just reads the powerpoints and doesn't add anything that shows up on the tests, and randomly decided halfway through the semester to start taking role.
You can just read the powerpoints and make a B in this class. To make an A you have to put in the effort to read the book. Otherwise, it's an easy class.

Pros: He's the most adorable old man.Gives easy easy 5 question multiple choice quizzes, about 10 throughout the semester. He puts study guides from lecture on his website along with the power points from lecture. Posts grades almost immediately. Quiz answers and questions are online.
Cons: Lectures were fun and interesting at the beginning, boring towards the end of the semester. Does give "random" attendance quizzes but they are for extra credit and they are usually the lecture right after tests.
Great class to take if you're looking for an easy science and you aren't too bad at biology

Quizzes are all 5 questions. Study guides for them were about the same subjects, but didn't help with preparation for quizzes. He drops two quiz grades and gives frequent extra credit quizzes, which consist of two free quiz answers (extra 2 out of 5). Exams are difficult for me and others, but not for some. Reading is necessary. Final is cumulative, and if you have missed up to 2 (I think it's two) days, then he will replace your final grade with your final exam if it's beneficial for you. Extremely nice teacher. Hates laptops and cell phones.

Pros: As long as you read the book and you read all of the extra little sections in the textbook then you will do well on all his tests. You must make sure that you understand the material that you are reading. If you fail to fully understand the book then you will do very poorly on all your tests. Also, go to class. If you take good notes, those are what his tests are outlined from. It is not a super difficult class but you will have to read.
Cons: The reading is a little time consuming but definitely doable with a decent size class load.
