MATH 1101 - INTRO MATH MODELING
Although a lot of people complained about her, I really enjoyed Dr. Ma's class. It is definitely possible to get an A as long as you try hard and put in some effort.
Pros: The way Dr. Ma teaches is very structured and organized. She is consistent with her teaching methods which was very beneficial for me. Her tests were not too bad and the two projects assigned helped boost your grade.
Cons: She has a difficult accent, but it's not completely incomprehensible. By the end of the semester, I hardly noticed. At her office hours, and sometimes in class, she can be short which comes off as kind of rude.

MATH 1101
INTRO MATH MODELING
1*
Pros: The two projects she gives are easy
Cons: The projects hardly count

She is horrid at explanations

She is of no help at office hours and rarely makes appointments
Avoid taking Ma, she's difficult to understand and she gets very frustrated when you ask her to explain a concept or expand upon it. The review sessions helped a lot, but her tests turned out to be extremely off from the review.

I would not advise taking her. She does not speak English very well, and if you have a question you better hope that she thinks it is a good one or else it won't get answered/

Cons: Hard to understand

Little to no extra credit
Not a math person! We only had several tests, 15 questions each. Her grading was a little unforgiving. Overall I decided to take Math 1101 at GPC and made an A. Her class isn't worth the stress if you just need the credit hours.

If you have the unfortunate chance of registering for this class I suggest you either pray that there is another opening in a different precal class or drop it completely and take precal next semester...

Pros: Homework not graded

Provides bonus problems and has a curve.

Ridiculously easy projects. Boosts everyone's grades.

Cons: She is sometimes hard to understand. Also sometimes it seems that she only knows enough English to teach the subject. Meetings with her are difficult because she misunderstands you frequently.

Notes only give basic concept, you are then asked to apply these extremely basic concepts to the hardest text book problems.
I do not recommend that you take Dr. Ma. While she is somewhat nice in class, she is unresponsive to in class questions and her tests are pretty difficult. She will ask you to apply concepts to very complex problems; its almost as if she doesn't understand that some students can't just apply a simple concept to everything. Based on what I've heard from other students she is much more difficult than the other Math 1101 professors.

INTRO MATH MODELING
1*
Pros: Rarely any quizzes and projects are easy
Cons: THICK ACCENT; IMPOSSIBLE TO UNDERSTAND. She does not welcome students asking questions or inquiring for explanations. Projects do not count for high % of grade.
DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR! I had to use my first withdraw from this course due to the nature of Ma and her regard for not acknowledging student's questions or concerns with material. I am not a math person and fell way behind quickly due to lack of explanation and understanding of what she was even saying. You will have to fend for yourself 100% in this course and basically teach yourself... Be prepared. Have heard from many others- strangers and friends- that they too have dropped/had to withdraw from Ma. AVOID having her as a professor at all costs...

MATH 1101
INTRO MATH MODELING
2**
Pros: She doesn’t grade any of the homework, and the tests are a lot like the homework that she assigns from the book and the printed examples. If the class does bad enough on the test there will be a small curve. She offered up to 15 points extra credit to add to tests by doing online questions. Math modeling is not a hard class and you will be fine IF you are good at math and have done well in basic high school math.
Cons: She does not explain concepts thoroughly enough. She makes you feel stupid if you ask questions and is rather abrupt and rude, I think that has to do with culture more than anything. She has an accent but I didn’t find it hard to understand. She does not give multiple examples, even when asked. Do not take her if you aren’t good at math.

3***
Pros: The class itself is pretty easy if you put time into it. Shouldn't be too extremely difficult
Cons: Never grades the homework, therefore you have no incentive to do it, which can bite you in the ass quickly. Dr. Ma is not the most helpful human being in the world, and if you have a question that may take up a lengthy amount of class time, or isn't deathly important, she'll make you look like an idiot and shoot you down real quick.
Basically, if you plan to do well, take good notes in lecture, and do your homework EVERY night, and make sure you finish the homework with a complete understanding of what's going on, because it will all be on the test. You can go to her office hours, but she still isn't overly helpful. Class is easy if you teach it to yourself.

Pros: Not a bad teacher, actually a very smart woman. Has a PHD. She speaks English perfectly, she only has a little bit of an accent but it's not hard to understand. The content is really easy and she goes through how to do it step by step. She is also really great about helping outside the classroom. I have e-mailed about homework problems her multiple times and she always responds within 24 hours with a very detailed answer.
Cons: Tests can sometimes be tricky but if you study, do the homework, go to the review sessions, and read all the problems carefully you shouldn't have a problem getting a high grade.

MATH 1101
INTRO MATH MODELING
3***
Pros: Doesn't take up homework; only assigns 2 projects and both are easy; tests are relatively simple
Cons: Not helpful--dislikes questions and often loses her temper; she can be difficult to understand; takes attendance so you have to go to class
Pretty easy class if you do the homework. Even though she doesn't take it up, the tests are almost exactly like the homework problems, so if you can get through all of the homework you're set for the tests. There are test reviews before the test; definitely recommend going to these because they give you much simpler methods to solving the problems.

Pros: attendance is not taken ever

Cons: projects count for very little

she's chinese and hard to understand sometime
She is a super nice lady and will talk to you about anything and help you out as best she can. she has a really funny personality because she is not from around here so she's entertaining. however, this does not improve her ability to teach. math modeling is obviously lower level and supposed to be easy but i ended up dropping the class. do not take her.

Pros: none.
Cons: not approachable at ALL and doesn't care a flying fuck about the students. she has TERRIBLE english and very difficult to understand what on earth she's talking about. going to class was useless. i only did well once i stopped paying attention in class and only read the book, using what she was trying to tell us in lecture as a foundation of what to read while she was failing at teaching us. i didn't learn a damn thing from her. avoid her if you can.

I'm not a math person. And I don't know if it's because I'm from a place where foreign accents are common, but she is NOT hard to understand. She speaks English perfectly fine for you to understand Math 1101... c'mon folks. She grades fairly, and I got away with an A without too much effort.

Pros: She goes over everything you need to know for her tests and EXACTLY how she wants you to do it. There is no reason to not do well on her tests. She also goes over any homework problems at the beginning of class. DO THE HOMEWORK and this class is a breeze.
Cons: MAKE SURE not to ask stupid questions, or she will hold them against you.. she remembers...

Pros: The material isn't actually that hard if you have a good foundation.
Cons: Ma really can't speak English very well. She laughs at your questions and won't really answer them. There is no grade boost for attendance or homework so there is literally no incentive to go to class.
Student: Can you tell us what material the exam will be on?

Ma: Paper.
