This class is a little bit ridiculous. We never use the book, in fact the teachers told us after we all bought the book that we won't use it. The class is based solely on what you take notes on in class and the homework. Professor Carty is a terrible teacher. You don't really learn anything because after it is all said and done you realize, nothing was ever taught. It is more talking than anything. Examples are too easy and the homework is too easy or hard to do and has nothing to do with what we learned in class. The exams are very difficult because you learned nothing and the questions are too difficult to answer without a calculator.

MATH 241
Calculus III
2**
Pros: Good teacher who knows his stuff. Plenty of office hours available.
Cons: Scary as hell. Teaches really fast and is obsessed with proofs. Worst con: his tests are disgustingly difficult and usually have huge curves.
Carty is a good teacher, but I think his cons kind of outweigh his pros. He told us he is on probation for failing too many kids. His tests are hard as hell; the first two caused half of my class to drop out. He also gives these weekly homework assignments that are also very difficult.

Carty is a great teacher though. He literally writes down everything he says, which is useful. However, every time he teaches a new concept, he needs to prove it first. This is nice I guess, but it gets annoying when every time you learn a new integral, he spends three quarters of the class period teaching you the Riemann sum. It takes up unnecessary time.

If Carty was a Diff Eq teacher that I could have next semester, I would probably avoid him.

Some people are scared of Carty because he is very direct. Don't let this frighten you. He knows his stuff and gives very thorough notes. If you pay attention you will do fine. Also, don't get too scared of low test scores because he has a history of curving grades at the end of the semester quite a bit. And yes, he does have a pony tail.

MATH 241
Calculus III
2**
Pros: Great explanations of material in lecture, makes an effort to answer questions about confusing subjects, enthusiastic and engaging orator
Cons: Exams are extremely difficult and often include material that was never explicitly discussed, does not curve very generously
Although he is obviously a very knowledgeable professor and skilled teacher, Carty's exams are way too difficult, negating his quality as a professor. His expectations of students are far too high and the exams require students to learn-on-the-fly and solve problems that they have little or no experience with.

MATH 241
Calculus III
2**
Pros: Very coherent lecturer.

Sense of humor.

Good use of the chalkboard.
Cons: Takes pleasure in students' displeasure.

Hard tests. seriously.

Explains things so that "math kids" will understand, while everyone that has trouble with the notation and/or math lingo gets left behind.
While his teaching seems fine in class, when the tests come around you realize you don't know anything. It almost seems like he wants you to fail his class.

1*
Pros: He is really smart and helpful if you talk to him in person
Cons: Otherwise, he grades unfairly and is not a good teacher. He is on prohibition for failing too many students (60% of students failed, with 55% being class average).
Work hard from the beginning - don't fall behind. Do homework, they are the only easy points
