Pros: Nicest professor ever. Spend time to know him during office hours and you will learn so much more beyond ECON 103.

This man may in fact just need to retire. Don't take this prof. if you cannot stand annoying sounds/clicking. I was not happy when my final ended up being 55% of my grade, but it was probably one of the easiest exams he has given me-not easy, but easier than usual

Easiest class ever if you understand the material well. Memorize the graphs and be able to explain it. Follow closely to the textbook and you got yourself an A+. Frankly all these students giving him bad reviews are just high school idiots who are not prepared to go to college. Also, get to know him during his office hours, you will learn so much beyond economics. (He was an advisor to President Carter once)

basically memorize the book. the tests are definitions, nothing like the online quizzes. his lectures are mostly stories about fish and canada; and he loves pop quizzes. he is a cute guy, but doesnt really care how well you do.

Pros: NONE
Cons: Ta's barely speak English and grade tests as hard as possible, Gottheil covers nothing relevant in lectures, I never learned a thing. Tests were extremely hard for a 100 level intro class. No curve, even with horrible test averages. Half the class has dropped after the Midterm to give you an idea of how ridiculous it is, and also there were a ton of people who didn't even show up to the midterm. I thought I could manage taking it with Gottheil because I've taken plenty of harder courses than a 100 econ class, and even though I was told NOT to take it with him, I did and am now regretting it completely. Oh and homework is no even close to being like questions on the test so homework is no help. Quizzes are just easy because if you come to lecture the quiz will just be on whatever he just covered. For your own good, STAY AWAY FROM GOTTHEILS CLASS. There is a reason he is on suspension.
Look above.

Pros: Is not a typical, boring economics professor because he tells many stories, it just depends it that is the teaching style you prefer.
Cons: Teaches the class as if they were all 8th graders. Likes to click his tongue and yell “Wham” every once in a while as well, which gets very annoying. He tells many stories, and therefore does not actually teach much during lecture.
The sole motivation of getting up for his 9 AM lectures are the “Pop” Quizzes he gives throughout the semester. Tests can be difficult if time is not spent reading the book cover to cover.

Pros: Really an easy course overall with a reasonable hour of homework a week and some occasional reading. Exams are a bit long, but are short answer and really quite easy if you've payed attention throughout the semester. His book is actually quite good, as well.
Cons: Yes, he tends to get sidetracked on tangents and seemingly unrelated stories, and it gets a bit boring for morning lectures.
If you're an engineering student or in another challenging major, this class will be a breeze with a minimal time-commitment. Just make sure you study for the exams.

Pros: The textbook is a great resource. Interesting course.

Cons: Rants about random things during lecture that have nothing to do with the class. Makes a new version of his book every year so taking this class is expensive. I learn more from the book than I do during lecture. I don't bother going to lecture anymore.
A lot of us have to take this course and can't avoid it. It's unfortunate but for those who have the option not to take the class with this professor, don't take the class.

If you expect to be taught by Mr. Gottheil then do not come to class. He speaks as though he was teaching a bunch of junior high kids and would rather talk of ancient rome than modern economics. Also this semester since he was lazy he made our final worth 55% of our grade since the TA's went on strike and we didnt take an in class exam. Fun times abound for those in his classes.

Cons: HIS LECTURES ARE BORING AND DO NOT HELP WITH EXAMS
He is awful, super hard and not very good explaining things. You're best bet is to get a good TA. Read the book cover to cover. He wrote the text book, so his exam questions come from it. Also, DO THE PRACTICE/OLD EXAMS!! He repeats test questions a lot.
