CHEM FUNDAMENTALS I

If you are taking this class, be sure it is with Professor Friedman. I really have never had a better chem professor. His explanations of the material are very easy to follow, he is a comical and entertaining lecturer, and his online office hours are very convenient and helpful. Yes, his exams are pretty difficult (class averages are usually around a 55-60), but the A/B line is a high C. I got a 77.7% in the class, but curved I got an A-, so he's pretty generous. The homework is online and you have to pay to use it, which is a drag, and the homework can be challenging, but you get multiple attempts. The discussions are absolutely worthless unless you need help - I went to one and then never again and did fine. Oh, he also does clicker questions, but he did half of them in the last lecture and for the most part they're pretty easy and you can talk to one another about them. Overall, though, if you have to take this class, Prof Friedman's the one to take it with.

CHEM 272
GEN BIOANALYT CHEM LAB

He made Chem lab as painless as one could hope. Gave 3 exams and a final for the lab. The exams were difficult, the average was usually in the 60's. The final was open note and was not difficult at all, as long as you kept a good notebook. A lab report was due every week and was graded fairly harshly. These reports were difficult and extremely time-consuming. That said, relative to other chem labs, this class wasn't bad at all. Friedman is good at making lectures interesting and only about a 5% curve was needed.

This is for orgo I lab as this prof was the coordinator. Lab is lab, it's 3 hrs/week. If you are given good procedures it's not too hard. Post lab Qs are hard and only somewhat relate to what happens in lab. Midterm and final are, as always for lab, very difficult; luckily all are MC. Curve at least 6%. Much depends on the TAs

ANALYT/BIOANALYT CHM LAB

Pros: Funny. tries to lighten the class. Easy projects at end. bonus extra credit lab. will end class early occasionally. only two exams (well curved)
Cons: Hard Class. Tons of lab reports. takes a lot of time.
hard class in general. might as well take it with LF since he'll try to add humor

Amazing teacher. Really taught you exactly what you needed to know. His tests are hard, but the curve at the end is pretty big. Def take him if you can! You will learn more than with another teacher--helps with Orgo 2.

CHEM 272
GEN BIOANALYT CHEM LAB
1*
Pros: The review session for the exams helped a lot. The final exam is extremely easy as long as you write down EVERYTHING in your lab notebook.
Cons: He was ridiculously hard. The labs were difficult, and they were graded very harshly. Friedman prided himself on his exams which were so difficult that he claimed to have gotten a D on it himself.
I did not like this professor at all, but had no choice but to take him. His lecture was too crowded and it was hard to pay attention and the exams and labs were unfair.

Pros: Not many, I think he is the only teacher.
Cons: Hard grader, the skill of the TA varies a lot
This is a pretty bad class overall. Only worth 2 credits, but as much homework as a regular class. The lab reports are graded fairly hard, and he changes how he wants sig figs done for each question. However, office hours are amazing. The TAs really help you understand the ambiguous questions, and will direct you on how the sig figs should be.

CHEM 131
CHEM FUNDAMENTALS I

Pros: Dr. Friedman is a really nice guy. You can tell that he cares about his students understanding the material. He has also responded to every email I've sent within the same day. Another plus is that he gives you the option to submit regrade requests for the exams.
Cons: The class was difficult and you do have to study your butt off to do well - I got a B+. When you take CHEM131, prepare to commit a lot of time to this class.

CHEM 131
CHEM FUNDAMENTALS I

Pros: Very good teacher, difficult exams, but grades are curved at the end and material really helps prepare you for organic chemistry. Posts videos of textbook problem solutions step-by-step online and is always willing to help.
Cons: Recycles jokes sometimes.
Take CHEM131 with him, you won't regret it. You can get an A if you go to class, pay attention, and do the work.

Pros: He's a great lecturer and will keep your attention

He usually ends class about 10 minutes early

The lecture with the lab was actually really helpful in helping us understand

Cons: His tests are extremely difficult.

He said all semester the class would be curved but apparently a 93% was an A- so that doesn't sound curved at all to me...

Dr. Friedman may be the best chem131 professors in the university. However he is very hard, and his test averages are usually in the 60s. He is very nice, gets to know his students and I enjoyed his class.
