Dr. Redish is a shining example of excellence in teaching that the rest of the UMD faculty should be following. He is ALWAYS willing to talk to you, he knows everyone by name (everyone!) and he tells you very frankly that if you understand the homework, you will do well on the exams. Granted, the homework is insanely difficult, but with enough time spent in the Course Center or Slawsky Clinic, you will understand it. The homework may take a while to do, but once you understand it, studying for the exams does not take very long at all. His course is more conceptual and less math based than other physics courses, and this is not for some people. I personally was bombing the course before I listened to Dr. Redish's advice and spent a few hours in the Course Center on Wednesdays. It worked miracles!
His course is enlightening, to say the least. Learning under Dr. Redish's tutelage has helped me academically and it has helped me grow as a person (really). He is highly recommended by me.

If you choose to take Redish's class, DEFINITELY go to the Slawsky clinic. They're great with homework help. Ask for Ralph. He's awesome
Pros:
I like his grade distribution- tests aren't everything
He takes a lot of participation points
Cons:
No textbook
His homework sometimes doesn't relate to the lecture material
It's a SHIT load of work

I'll preface this comment by saying Redish's students tend to either love or hate him. He has a unique (and extremely effective, if you ask me) teaching style which some people struggle to adapt to. With that said, I LOVED Redish. His main objective to teach, rather than research, unlike many professors at UMD, which was refreshing. He gives 2 exams and a final, which are fairly difficult, but also curved a good amount (a 70% on a test is an A, sort of). Also, the lab and discussion grades are graded leniently so they also pad your grade. He gives weekly quizzes which arent too difficult as long as you understand the basic concepts. I think he is an excellent teacher with reasonable grading standards, and I can't recommend his class enough.

Pros: makes you think!
Cons: doesn't spell out the equations for you.
He engages the students in a way no other professor has been able to do for me while at UMD. He frustrated me a lot, but at the same time I felt like the material I did understand will be with me longer than most subjects I have "learned" over the last few years. I would take him again in a heartbeat.

Pros: Great professor, makes lecture very exciting. Lectures are interacive and interesting. Very generous curve on exams and overall grade
Cons: Workload is heavy for a 100-level course. Heavy portion of your grade is based on homework and lab, if you have a harsh TA it will ruin your grade

Homeworks are very hard but once you understand them you will be fine for the exam.
His exams are relatively easy to predict, just study the homework and past exams he puts online.
Very enthusiastic and makes physics interesting
