Conover requires that you get a subscription to the New York Times, which is annoying because that costs rather a lot. Almost all the exams and all the recitations are based on reading from the Times. The only graded stuff that isn't based on the Times are the online book quizzes, which are her only method of evaluating whether or not students are actually reading the book. The book quizzes are annoyingly hard for being the only assessment of an otherwise unused resource. The major project for the class is the clippings project, which is a decently long paper based on inegalitarian traditions. The research for the paper are articles that you find in the Times. Conover herself is pretty funny and a good professor, but doesn't make much time for dealing personally with students. Any issues you have should be taken up with your TA, because as a rule Conover doesn't deal with minor issues. Make sure you study notes frequently, because you will be lost without them.
