AFAM 101
Black Experience to 1865
5*****
Great instructor, but students must enter the course with an open mind and the ability to think critically about the past and how they may have affected the present.

He's fairly liberal, unlike most college professors. He runs his class more like a discussion and you have group discussions which helps you to get to know people. He used about 8 or 9 books for the semester (we didn't read everything in all the books) and we had reading almost everyday but he only discussed them. He used to give daily reading quizzes and threatened to bring them back when people stopped reading in the middle of the semester. His tests were easy if you pay attention, go to class, and do the reading, which were interesting for the most part. He doesn't do multiple choice questions on his tests, but like I said, they're easy if you do the reading and go to class.

AFAM 474
Key Issues in African and Afro-American Linkages
5*****
Pros: Extremely knowledgeable

Never uses textbooks - always uses autobiographies and historical analyses.

Never uses lecturing as primary means of education - about 90% of the course is based on small group discussion of readings.
Cons: Missing a class greatly decreases chance of success - Midterm and Finals use questions directly linked to in-class discussions and activities.

LOTS of reading

25-page (minimum) journal due at end of course, so LOTS of writing.

Pros: Robert Porter is without a doubt the most genuine, kindhearted professors you will ever meet.
Cons: His classes are usually a lot of reading and writing. He's also very popular so his classes are hard to get into.
The experience of having a Porter class is well-worth it, please take one if you can.
