Dr. Banas is a really good professor, really knowledgeable about Communication and a very energetic teacher. The only bad thing about Comm 1113 is that about 1/3 to 1/2 of the questions on the exams are from lecture, so if you don't go the only way you can get it right is to guess. He posts his PowerPoints online, but they only outline the topics, and he takes his exam questions from the more in-depth lecturing. Other than that, awesome prof and an easy class if you actually go and take notes.

Pros: Banas himself is a fast-paced, awesome, interesting professor who uses great expertise to teach great communication.
Topics are practical and interesting. Much of the workload isn't too hard.
Cons: Exams can be kind of a load. Lectures are important and he's pretty good at basically not letting you know test questions given at lectures if you didn't go to them. Period.
Discussion projects can be a nuisance if you don't have a good TA or group and sometimes you don't get the best explanations.
A friend told me there was no need to go to the lectures. They're useless and you don't need them on the test. I went to a few anyway because they were entertaining. But because I missed those few, it got hard to be motivated to attend others. I missed out, a lot.
Don't ditch lectures. There's important test stuff. Lots of it. And unless you have an extreme excuse, you won't be taught what you missed.

Pros: Dr Banas is HYSTERICAL. there is no need to ever miss a lecture because he is so entertaining. 2% extra credit is offered. the tests are half lecture half book stuff and pretty easy/common sense
Cons: the discussion is very dry and you do a lot work for every class period. the speech/presentation is worth a lot of your grade so make sure you do well on it and it is pretty difficult.

Pros: Entertaining lecturer
Cons: Tests unrealistically difficult
If you're taking Comm 1113, there is no excuse not to take it from Banas. His lectures are my favorite hour of class every week by far. If you have a good TA (mine is Sara Staub) you're in the clear, just make sure to study your book for the tests.

Pros: Funny and insightful.
Cons: Arrogant and pompous.
Not too difficult of a class, Dr. Banus is a great speaker. He definitely knows what he is talking about. You don't have to have the textbook but I recommend it to complete the study guides and review for the exams. The exams are mostly based on concepts.
