She's a very nice lady, and she really knows her stuff. She provides the powerpoint slides for her lectures online, which are pretty necessary. She assigns homework from the end of chapter questions in the book that's due in recitation every Thursday. There's also Aris, which is online homework, that's usually due every Tuesday. She starts assigning two Aris assignments per week, shortly after the first test I believe. One is due on Monday, and the other is due on Tuesday. They can range in difficulty but almost always take a good amount of time to complete. Her tests can be pretty tricky, and if you do not know the material very well, they can be very hard. They are all multiple choice, but she knows where and how most students slip up on problems, and she'll put the wrong answer that you might get if you make a common or even not-so-common mistake. Overall she's been a great teacher and I would recommend her if you're majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Biochem, etc.

CHEM 1035 - General Chemistry
Amateis was not the instructor for the class. Michael Berg was. Going to his classes was pretty much worthless. All you need to do is the recitation homework. That's where all the exam questions came from. As long as you understand how to do the homework. You are set for this class.

CHEM 1045
General Chemistry Lab

Pros: Pretty easy class. As long as you do the experiments, turn in the assignments, and put in some effort, you should get an A. Also, only of the labs is dropped, so a lot of people didn't go to the last week of class if they already had a decent grade in the class.
Cons: A TA teaches the class and a lot of them speak English as a second language, so they're hard to understand, but they're usually extremely nice. I wouldn't know what Dr. Amateis looks like if she walked right up to me. Lab reports are a big pain, but not too difficult after a little practice and as long as you utilize the example lab report in the lab manual. The only complaint is that sometimes the TA doesn't express exactly what she is looking for in the lab reports and you could go through the whole course not knowing what you've done wrong.
Pretty easy A with some effort, but nothing too terrible. A lot of your experience depends on the TA you get.

Definitely one of the best General Chemistry professor you could ask for. Her tests are probably the toughest but you will learn so much from her class and you will actually understand chemistry. The way she teaches the class is much more comprehensible than other professors and genuinely cares for her students. Go to her review sessions, take the practice exams you can find, and do the problems in the book. The more work you put into her class, the better chance you have at making an A or B. Patty is more than willing to help you if you plan ahead.

Dr. Amateis is one of the better teachers I've had here at Tech. In a class of over 300 students, she does a good job of conveying the material so that everyone can understand it. In class, office hours, or help sessions, she is always available to answer any questions to help you understand exactly what you need to know. Dr. Amateis is also very personable and friendly. Even after taking the class, whenever I see her around campus she smiles and says hello. She is a very nice lady and a wonderful teacher. Top notch.

I thought Amateis was a really good teacher she has extra help sessions right before the tests which you should definitely go to because they help a lot. She definitely explains the material well and is prepared for her lectures. Your grade depends on how much time you put into the class so if you want to do well just study and go for extra help

Pros: Pretty straightforward 1-credit course. Read lab, do lab, type up lab, and turn in lab. Take a multiple choice midterm, and final.
Cons: Some of the chemistry concepts might be a little challenging to understand
Taught by TA. Course is about as interesting as an introductory chemistry lab can get, which isn't really much for most people. Many of the labs start at 8 in the morning, but otherwise, a very simple course.

Dr. Amateis is by far the best teacher I have had at Tech. It might not be how she teaches things in class, but the way that her class is set up, it forces you to learn all the material and do well in her class. The only bad thing about her is here test scheduling. She very often gives tests the week right before breaks start so that sucks, but otherwise she is a really fair and good teacher.

A straightforward teacher who gives you all the necessary notes and information for you to earn a good grade. Her lectures are straight to the point on what you need to know to do well on her tests and quizzes. Although she is not entirely exciting as a professor, her teaching skills and knowledge in Chemistry makes her a teacher you want to be taught from.

Pros: Pretty straightforward class. Make sure you're there on time, bring your materials, do all the assignments, and you should be good.
Cons: The lab reports take a while and the pre-lab questions are pretty tedious. I thought the midterm and final were pretty difficult. Overall, this class was involved quite a bit of work.

The TA teaches the class and I never saw the actual professor. There are a lot of lab reports and prelabs, but they're not too bad, especially with some koofer help. I personally thought the tests were pretty hard, but I wasn't very good at chem. Not too bad overall.

Lab reports can be nightmares and be dreadful. The TAs have trouble sometimes communicating and getting through to the students the knowledge and information. Only a midterm and a final exam, but they are tough. More than average effort is needed in this course.
