CHEM 2536 - Organic Chemistry
Very tough class. She is by far the most knowledgeable of the O chem professors, however she is by far the hardest. Take Berg if you're looking to get an A, take Bump if you want to be prepared for the MCATS

Until Dr. Preston Durrill starts teaching Organic Chemistry, I'd argue that Dr. Bump has little competition as the best teacher for this subject at Tech. Of course, the material is still vast and challenging to master, but Dr. Bump makes it a lot easier than it would otherwise be. Halfway through the semester, you'll be learning about bimolecular nucleophilic substitution reactions and just be thinking how smart you are because it's so easy. Trust me, she's a good teacher.

Professor Bump is quite obviously a very intelligent woman. I have the utmost respect for her knowledge of Organic Chemistry, as well as how young she is compared to many other professors with similar credentials. However, I have to say that I don't think she is the fairest professor. I feel like her exams are twice as hard as anything she's ever prepared us with, and a lot of students pay the price for that. Out of the 6 exams that I've taken of hers, I can honestly say that I thought about half were truly fair. Aside from that, she is funny and a pleasure to learn from. She does everything she possibly can to connect with her students, from hosting lunches to setting up plenty of time during the week for office hours.

Bump is an excellen organic chemistry teacher, I would stronly recommend her to anyone taking the course. She breaks down the material making it much easier to understand. She's a great organic chem teacher and she's also very enthusiastic. Going to her class was never really a burden and half way through each class you take a break where she reads off funny usually unrelated "fun facts". If you attend class and review your notes you will do well in this course.

Pros: Can explain things WELL, even ratio of what is discussed in class VS what is on test, knows how to break up class from lecturing to 'attention grabbing' material
Cons: Homework (although not worth a large portion of grade) can be veryyyy aggravating at times
By far one of my favorite professors. Very down to earth and almost seems more like a mom teaching rather than a PhD Chemist. She has a ton of office hours including a weekly review session (which are very handy to go to about a week or two before tests). Does little things to keep class interesting like "fun facts" for the day that she usually opens class with. At first she may come across a little strong-military like, but within a class or two it wears of quick. The only two quarks I had with this class is that she isn't the fastest person in the world to put up test grades. In fact, shes down right bad at it (never had my grades sooner than a week after a test). Also the homework which is online can be VERY annoying at times but this is easily resolved by doing it with a friend or fellow class mate allowing the switching back-and-forth of viewing answers (plus you only need to get a 75 on the homework to receive full credit).

Overall one of the BEST teachers here at Tech. Very fair, loves to teach, can explain very complex things in basic simple way. If you have to take O-chem GET HER!

Professor Bump is very knowledgeable about the subject. She is willing to help if you go to her office hours, and holds a weekly review and help session. She gives 1 overall point of your total grade in extra credit. You have online homework due about once a week, which isn't too bad. However, the tests are extremely hard. They are heavily weighed on the multiple choice, which aren't give-mes. For example, if you miss 1 MC question you are already down about 6% of your test grade. In comparison to what I have heard about Professor Ber, she is harder and her tests generally cover more material. Overall, she is a great teacher and I would suggest taking her.

Dr. Bump is a very fair professor who wants the best for her students. You need to be in class to take notes, but she usually tries to make the class stimulating, and she breaks up the lectures by doing some sort of experiment or sharing a story about her life, etc. Go to class and study for the tests and you'll get a good grade.

You dont need a book for this class but it definitely helps. Her tests are ridiculously difficult, probably the toughest teacher i have had here. She knows the material well but since it is a large lecture class it is hard to always understand and keep up. Definitely one of the hardest classes here

Best teacher I've had at VT. She makes ochem easy and understandable. She does seem to go through the information very quickly but once you catch on to her style of teaching, it becomes easier to study. She has plenty of office hours and help sessions. Very down to earth and easy to talk to.

Organic Chemistry is actually the one of hardest, toughest classes of science major. If you study org. chem deeply, i recommend her lecture. However, it is really hard to get an A for this lecture unless you study a lot more than other classes. Otherwise, she is very nice and kind :-)

She moves really fast and it is sometimes hard to understand in class but there are a lot of times where you can talk to her outside of class. She goes through mechanisms a lot. She's good if you are a quick learner, if not it takes a little more effort to stay with the group.

Dr. Bump uses Sapling for homework, an online homework assignment. Her tests are murder, but with a good amount of studying, definitely not impossible. She is really fair in her grading. For OChem, it's going to be hard no matter what, but Dr. Bump is a good choice to make.

She know the information very well, she is just not good on communicating the information. Alot of outside studying and making your own notes it necessary, I got a decent grade but I am taking Berg next semester, we will see how that goes.

Best OChem professor there is, teaches step by step and goes over anything you do not understand. Exams are relatively challenging but the koofers she puts up are excellent practice and the exact same format as her exams.

If you have to take Ochem, Bump is the best teacher to have. There were many students who had other professors and would sit in on her lectures to better understand the material.

Dr. Bump is THE BEST organic chemistry teacher, make no mistake. She can explain the subject material in a manner no other organic teacher I've ever had (besides Carlier for first semester) can even come close to. This course is hard, and there's no way around it. The only way to do well is to show up to lecture (worth it), and study a lot. Her grading scheme is really, really, really rigged in your favor. If you bomb a test, it's automatically worth 10% of your grade and can be replaced by the final. Meanwhile, you best test is automatically 25% of your grade, with the other test somewhere in between. The homework is a ridiculous 15% of your grade, and it's impossible to not get 100% on it because she drops a bunch of the assignments, which are electronic and can be taken as many times as you want. Overall, I just found Maggie Bump to be a ridiculously effective teacher and I highly recommend her. Oh, but still be prepared to study your butt off.
