Mmmkay. Get used to hearing this. Chang says mmmkay every other word. I know a lot of people say that Chang is the best thing to happen to physics but I absolutely hated this class. I barely learned anything. If you are taking this class and you need...

Amazing teacher. Quite frankly I learned physics better than I've learned any other material in any other class, And this was my first physics class period (did not take in high school). Got an A in this class despite crappy physics lab. He's very understanding, very understandable, and if you dont know what's going on, he's very approachable via email or office hours. Tests were very much like the homework/examples, which made studying much less stressful. Quizzes were easy, and we rarely had recitation (I think 3 times the entire semester). Recitation is quick, just take the quiz and leave.

If you have to take physics, chang is teaching, do all you can to get his section. By far he is the best teacher I've had.

Also, although he says he uses the book, and assigns questions from book, I never really did those questions. If you can do his questions, you can do 95-100% of all questions on the quizzes/tests.

Pros: Chang is the greatest teacher... we have all heard that. Why you ask? Because he devotes his life to teach US! He accepts less pay than most professors at VT because he devotes every waking hour of his life to teaching not researching. If you ask me Roger Chang is a picture of Ut Prosim!

Makes his own notes/ hw problems for students. Does not bring any notes to class, everything comes straight out of his head, amazing. When he is at his office he is always willing to help, no matter how many people are there or what time it is.

If you're taking Physics at Tech, you want Dr. Chang. I promise you. He wants his students to succeed, so he works his butt off to make it happen. His office hours are crazy. He just gives you his teaching schedule and says, "Hokai, this is when I'm teaching. Any other time you can come and see me in my office at ### Norris, hokai?"

He's from Taiwan, and he'll regale you with horror stories from his childhood schooling. The first class, I thought that I'd get really annoyed with him saying, "Hokai" all the time, but by the end of that class, I didn't even notice it anymore.

Yeah, his tests can be pretty hard, but he usually has about 108 points on the thing and only grades them out of 100, so he's always including extra credit when he can. Also, he manipulates the grading scale at the end, improving everyones' grades (or at least he did my semester).

Dr. Chang is ESM, so he teaches Physics from an engineer's standpoint, which is awesome for the vast majority of the class.

His recitation period is just for a weekly quiz, but you're allowed any notes that you have, and the quiz is just the homework that was assigned that week with different numbers, so you can basically just transfer your homework over to another sheet of paper and leave within fifteen mintues of getting there. Also, he allows a "cheat sheet" on the tests as long as you don't actually write down homework problems directly with numeric values, but he says that it's okay to have every problem written down symbolically (using only variables).

Trust me, get Dr. Chang.

I loved having Chang for the second time here at Tech and I'm really disappointed I didn't get into his Vibrations section for Spring 2009. Chang is the man. Advice: ALWAYS GO TO CLASS AND TAKE NOTES. If you do, you will be able to do the homework easily, and then the tests are exactly like the homework. I got an A- and I'm by no means an A Student.

Chang is a great guy, I'll go into a little detail: His lectures are about problem examples and his homework is similar to the lectures. What is awesome is that he has study sessions ever week before the quiz usally a night where he goes over the homework in detail and his quizes are basically the homework problems, just different numbers. He frequently sends e-mail to let you know whats going on and he is available in his office most of the time. One note though is that his tests tend to be really hard and flip around learned problems to solve for other variables which is a draw back if you get into the habit of "memorizing" how to solve specific problems rather than knowing how to solve them, I had to learn this the hard way on my exams. The semester isn't over yet so but I have a good feeling that I will get a good grade in this class. Overall he is a great professor.

Change is Awesome! You need to go to every class, because he does examples of everything that will be on the test or homework. Or you can go to the review sessions every week and he'll do out each homework for you. For the tests, he lets you bring in a formula sheet that you can have anything except for numerical examples. So you can bring in a sheet with all the examples he does in class or on homework, as long as you use variables instead of numbers. And he has office hours whenever he isnt in class, so he's very reachable if you have a question. He gave us one quiz a week, but only bcus he cancelled recitation. He doesnt grade the homework, and he changes how much each test is worth depending on how you personally do. So your worst test is worth 5%, next highest is 10%, etc.

This man is a genius. Go to the lectures and take notes and the class is very simple. I didn't go to any of the lectures and ended up with a C, so don't be too intimidated by the material, even though it does seem really difficult at first. The homework is usually short and he often holds review sessions the night before it's due which explain everything very well. Also, make sure you know how to do all of the practice problems, since the test questions are generally the same but with different numbers. As far as his knowledge, theres no question he is brilliant. While lecturing he will figure out sine, cosine, and tangent functions off the top of his head, even for stuff like tan(14.8)!! Take this class with Chang and you will be very satisfied with your choice.

Dr. Chang makes physics easy, there's something I thought I would never say. I struggled with physics in high school and absolutely dreaded taking it in college. But with Chang teaching it, physics was actually pretty straightforward. If you have any problems he is always willing and (more importantly) available to help you whenever you need him. Exams are a little more difficult than the homeworks he gives out (which he does for you in the review sessions) and the quizzes are exactly like the homeworks. You also get to use a cheat sheet on all the exams. Chang is the most amazing physics professor I have ever had. I was disappointed to learn that he doesn't teach PHYS 2306 though.

Chang is by far my favorite professor thus far at Virginia Tech. He's one of the few teachers that is genuinely eager to teach. There are only two downsides to Chang: He doesn't cover as much material (although you might consider this a pro!), and his accent takes a little while to get used to. That aside, Chang is probably the smartest guy you'll ever talk to. He's technically an ESM professor, but he knows applications to so many majors! A lot of ME and AOE students visit his office hours even when they aren't taking one of his classes, he's just that helpful. If you can get Chang, do it! You will NOT regret it.

Robert is an amazing teacher. I love his study sessions since it really helps students with not only preparing for the next quiz or test, but also with the homework itself. He focuses so much on the students that he has almost unlimited office hours (9-5 or whenever he isn't in a lecture) and he is great at helping students during that time. Some of his students love him so much that they come back to him for help in statics and other math/science oriented classes. Chang is one of those teachers that you want to get at all costs for physics because he LOVES to teach and to see that his students truly understand.

He was amazing. He explained everything extremely well and was incredibly nice. He is always available and gives great help. If you go to class you can almost ace the class. He lets you use notes and homework on all the quizzes, which are the same problems as the homework. A few problems on each test are tough, but he gives partial credit on those and is very generous. The tests are all multiple choice. Work your schedule around getting Chang, because he is completely worth it. You understand all the material and he makes the class interesting.

The best professor in the university. His office hours are just whenever he is not teaching a class, is very good at breaking things down to an understandable level, and is a genius. I have never met a professor who cares more about his students. If you do his homework and pay attention in class you will do well on his exams. He doesn't curve, because he never needs to, the grades for the class are already good enough.

His accent can take a little getting used to, but NOT one of the worst ones I've heard on campus. Chang is such a good teacher and is available WHENEVER you need him. He goes over all the homework problems once a week in a review session, and his tests are exactly like the homework. It's really refreshing to have a teacher that can actually teach and lays everything out on the line. TAKE CHANG, he's the best!!

Chang is the smartest man alive. He is the most dedicated teacher at Tech, and a good one also. He has great teaching methods and his tests are straightforward. If you know the homework material then you wont have too much trouble with the tests. The best thing is say the 3 tests are worth %60 of your grade, he counts the worst test like %10, best like %35 and the other %15. Great guy who cares about his students.

I enjoyed being in Chang's class. Despite stopping the class short, due to the tragic event, my rating for the class was based on what was supposed to happen, for example, we were supposed to have 4 exams, even though we only had 3 of them.

The best part of being in Chang's class is that it goes by quickly since all he does is goes over example problems, which appear in the same exact form as quizzes and exams.

He's a good professor, however his tests are rather difficult. The quizzes are made so easy by the fact that he has review sessions and practically does them for you. The tests are "based on the quizzes and homework", but really are a lot harder, and unless you truly understand the concept, will be lost. Simply knowing the formulas is not good enough. Also, dont expect to have a recitation...ever.

This guy is a college students dream teacher. His lectures are very easily understood and if you don't understand you can go into his office whenever you want. His grading is amazing. You can easily get at least a B . His recitations are used for quizzes which are almost identical to the problems from the homework. You can also use notes. Great teacher by far the best in my opinion.

Chang is a great professor. He goes over the material very thoroughly and realize that college life isn't always easy. He usually gives a curve on his tests and has your lowest test score count the least amount because sometimes you just have a bad day and you don't do too well on the test. He has an open door policy for his office hours. Overall great guy and great professor.
