CHEM 1016
Introduction to Chemistry

Jeannine Eddleton is definitely one of the finest instructors Virginia Tech has to offer. She's just one of those people that can make even your most hated subject fun and easy to grasp. In-class demos liven up otherwise straight-forward lectures, the powerpoints for which are posted online for easy note-taking, and she is always available with lots of office hours and promt responses to e-mails for the students who have questions. She really makes it a point to be fair to everyone too. She assigns 16 homeworks over the course of the semester, of which she takes the best 13 grades, and out of 5 tests, she takes the best 4, making it possible for a lot of kids to not even have to take the final exam. Overall, I'd say she's one of the best teachers a Freshman could have, b/c she really teaches you how to handle the stress of college with good organization and time-management skills that are inevitably developed. And, on a more personal note, she really is a genuinely kind and thoughtful person, who really cares about each and every one of her students as much as if they were one of her own adorable children. Thanks Mrs. E!!!

Well of the criteria you can rate, you can't tell why she's a bad teacher, can you? She knows her stuff, is very nice, comes prepared, communicates what she wants to communicate well, is pretty fair and she's always available. Here's why she sucks. First off, you will be babied from the first day of class and made to feel like you just made that huge transition from elementary school to middle school, and I really don't want to hear it, especially after I've already gone through 2 years of college and up to this point no teacher needed to act like I was a complete idiot and couldn't figure out problems such as what to do when my printer fails and stupid tips that just make you feel juvenile. Second, the class is an hour and 15 minutes long. She occasionally does exciting demonstrations... but the first half of the semester, she used up the entire class time by giving us an amount of useful information that could have easily been communicated in 15 minutes. The second half of the semester she actually taught useful things the entire class period, but that was because there was so much more information than at the beginning, she still didn't cover half of what was on homeworks and the tests. Tests are a lot like the homeworks. Homeworks consist of maybe 1/6 questions that you can answer from your book, 1/6 questions that you can answer from what she taught in lecture, and then 2/3 that you have to waste time googling or going to her office hours. Thats where the availability comes in. She offers a ton of office hours, however, the homework questions require that you attend every office hour session she holds, or else you will not really be able to get above a B on them, at least, not if you have a real schedule. I work 3 days a week, and my other classes are upper division classes that don't give me the time to attend office hour sessions on a regular basis. Besides that, in 2 years here, I have never had a teacher use office hours for teaching, and I feel that is just wrong. Office hours should be for further explanation of material that a student did not understand in class or from the book. She completely leaves out topics that she then goes over in office hours, so its as if you skipped out on class 2 days a week if you don't go. I'll stop ranting and raving now, but it just needed to be said. I'm still pulling a B rather easily, she doesn't grade very hard, but these are classes I always expect to get an A in b/c they are intro and not even

If you need to fill a science requirement take this class! It is beyond easy. And at times annoyingly so. You get to drop 1 exam and 3 hw assignments. She offers extra credit hw assignments as well. You can essentially be finished with the course before Thanksgiving break. (if you are happy with your 4 exam scores) I would suggest this course over any other science, including bio and geology (which are known to be easy) chem 1015 w/ Eddleton is an easy, easy, A & koofers really helps!

I was dreading to have to take a science class like Chemistry, but after a few classes with Jeannine Eddleton - I was happy to be there!

She's very knowledgeable, teaches well, is fun, cares about her students, and is very fair. And after awhile, Chemistry classes can get boring, so she makes it exciting by doing all kinds of crazy and fun experiments. You'll see stuff blow up, watch things catch on fire, etc.

What else can you ask for in an Intro to Chemistry course?

i have taken her for chem 1015 and 1016 and i have loved both of her classes. she enjoys teaching and she more down to earth than other professors. shes willing to go out of her way to help you out and she pretty much grades on how much you are willing to pay attention and show interest in the class. just do the homework, go to office hours, and study the notes and youll do fine. she is on my list of top professors at vt.

Great fun teacher, not a cake walk but nothing too hard. She makes class fun; before every class she plays music ranging from kanye west to queen. She also is very family orientated. Incorporates her family and what all her children are doing in class discussion. If you're a business student filling your science requirement this is the professor and class to do it in.

Great professor, go to office hours every week and you will get the homework answers. She is very fair and her tests are much like the homework but you should also read the chapters/powerpoints so you don't get hit with a curveball.

Eddleton's class is really not that hard but most of the emphasis is put on the homework that is due weekly. Do well on the homework and you'll ace the tests. The problem is the homework problems have nothing to do with the text and rarely are covered during lectures. She expects you to somehow deduce the answers to the questions by listening to her talk. She also has these twisted questions that are sometimes tossups so go to office hours to get the answers. If you go to office hours she will love you and she practically gives the answers to every single homework problem. The tests mirror the homework questions sometimes word for word. I'll say it again do your homework and you'll be set

She counts homework more than your test average (50% HW, 40% tests) and drops 3 of your lowest HW grades. Also drops your lowest test out of 5. There's no cumulative final, just another test with material covered since the last one. 10% of your grade is participation that she measures using iClicker data but I only went to maybe 60% of the classes and still got all my participation points. I never read the book but the extra OWL assignments really helped with preparing for tests and she uses them to replace low homework grades if you have any. Honestly most of the time you'll spend on the class is for homework.

talks about her kids all the time. if you want to get to know her as a person, go to the lectures. otherwise your better off reading the book. the only good part about going to her class is she occasionally addresses homework questions and leaves the answer key open for everyone to see. very unavailable, pretty much said from day one that she doesnt do office hours if you have a question put it on the forum and get another student to answer it. shes a very nice funny woman and does interesting experiments in class, they just rarely relate to the subject at hand and never show up on tests

This class is not too tough. Eddleton is a great lady: enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and generally accessible. The course material itself is not enjoyable for non-science majors but Koofers made this class very do-able. Most tests are largely based on past tests from Koofers and homework is also pretty reasonable with the help of Koofers and a study group. Also, she shuts down the class for students with A's after Thanksgiving, which is really helpful.

Mrs. Eddleton is a generally good professor. Don't take her class though if you don't plan to continually go to her office hours. A lot of information only discussed in office hours often shows up in the exams. Still, I learned a lot from her class. Grading is really lenient, and she's willing to answer lots of questions in class.

This was by far my favorite class. Prof Eddleton brings the material to life with awesome demonstrations and really does her best to make the class interesting. The homework given is a little challenging, but before every class Prof Eddleton holds office hours and basically goes over every single question.

She is by far one of the best instructors I've had. She makes chemistry easy to understand and really cares about her students. You don't have to do the last 3 homeworks or take the final if you're satisfied with your grade. Great class.
