Everythings well laid out, just go to the math empo at take practice quizzes until you get a few 100's, and if you dont understand something, put a red cup up.

The material is pretty easy, but can sometimes get confusing. If you get lost or behind there are online lectures that Jerri has posted when you log in to the class site, these lectures are invaluable if you are having a hard time with the concepts. Other than that Laxworld's review pretty much sums it up, "...just go to the math empo and take practice quizzes until you get a few 100's, and if you don't understand something, put a red cup up." The exams are semi-hard though, so don't take them until you can get 100's on all of the quizzes in that section. Watch out for the word problems, they are really tricky, however don't worry about them too much because if they're all you miss you'll still get an A.

Online course, so no book necessary. Being an online course, it can be difficult at times to get enough study material, but the professor is easily accessible via e-mail. As a side note, all quiz questions are generated by Mathematica and the exams pull from the same question pool as the quizzes, so if you can ace those, you should do well in the exam. Exact same difficulty.

Two words.... Math Emporium. The class was not that hard. The material does get harder in the last few lessons. Problems can be time consuming. Overall the supplemental video lectures got me through the final few weeks. The help from Ms. England is great. If you ask for help at the empo itself, expect to be confused. Each helper has their own way of doing each problem. I endured some really negative experiences with the helpers. Once or twice they plainly stated that they couldn't help me because they didn't know what I was doing. Sometimes just getting help could take 20-30 minutes from the time you put up the cup on the computer. Once my computer locked up during a quiz. I placed the cup on top and waited. So much time passed that the computer finally unlocked itself! (I was blessed for that to happen). Even with the sometimes rude attitude of some of the employees, I still enjoy the format of the classes at the emporium. It seems to complete the task in the most efficient way. I enjoyed the class and learned a lot.

The material itself is pretty mundane and not very useful outside of a technical major. Even then, you'll probably use software to do the difficult work. Anyways, Prof. England is friendly, though you'll most likely never see her unless you go to the emporium for tutoring. Start looking over the material for each weekly quiz at the beginning of each week, otherwise you'll be trapped at your laptop on a Saturday night (at least until 10 pm) trying to complete the quizzes.

You will likely never see her other than the first day when she explains the class. The rest is online and pretty simple if you just spend an hour or two preparing. If you have a question though, she will readily answer it and email you back with a thorough explaination. Other then that, the rest of the class is up to you.

Didnt talk to the professor once. Online course, was fairly easy, allowed to take at own pace with a minimum pace allowed. Does not take up more than a few hours total a week at min pace. Just reading online material, then taking empo quizzes and tests. no suprises after first class/lecture(only lecture)

The class was online so I never actually saw the professor except for the first day. Watch the lectures and take the practice quizzes. The quizzes are the same as the practice, just with different numbers/answers. If you understand the practice quizzes then you'll do fine on the quizzes and tests.

Unless you really want to, you never see her. You just get an e-mail once a week reminding you to take the quiz. If you understand the material online, you'll do fine on the quiz. If not...well, you always have the Empo helpers. (And those are the people I'm rating)

The materials pretty straight forward; however it is all through the math emporium so can get confusing if you have trouble deducing mathematical concepts from paragraphs of writing. If you take your time and do the practice quizzes it shouldn't be too hard.

On line course so if you can teach yourself math it's as easy as it gets. Really simple until the last few sections but your lowest quiz grades are dropped so that shouldn't matter.

Never saw the prof after the first class. Put up lectures online which were fairly helpful, but I would've greatly preferred having an actual teacher in this course.

Pros: Flexible schedule, online text and practice quizzes are helpful, and the tests contain the same types of questions on the quizzes
Cons: Quizzes only take up 15% of the grade even though they are frequent, going to the Math Emporium takes time
You have weekly quizzes, which are easy up until the last two weeks which suddenly get much harder. A few quizzes can be dropped except the last two, and your final exam can replace one of your tests if it is higher. There are online notes, video lectures, and practice problems. The online format for some quizzes is also easy to take advantage of, but the class is already easy.

MATH 1114
Elementary Linear Algebra
1*
Pros: Provides lots of learning material
Cons: Videos are terrible
Math 1114 is an online course, you never meet Jerri except for the first day of class. She provides notes to teach linear algebra, and she makes videos going over those notes and working out example problems. The videos are excessively slow, be prepared to watch for 10 minutes on basic algebra processes, or skip through most of it. Most of the quizzes on the math empo are easier to just plug the answers back into the question, and find out which of the four is right, than it is to solve the problem the correct way. Not much learning goes on here.

Pros: This is an online class for VT, but she still puts up online lectures, which really helps.
Cons: It's an online class, so if you can't teach yourself math, basically you're screwed.
Online classes suck, but this one is made a little more bearable since she puts up thorough online lectures. She explains the material very well. Since you have to learn everything at your convenience online though, it makes it hard to keep up if you aren't motivated to sit down and do the work before the weekly quizzes, which are usually due on a Saturday of all days of the week.

Pros: I took the online class, and the nice part was you had all week to finish a quiz, assuming you did one quiz per week. You could take quizzes ahead too and I finished my exam before Thanksgiving Break.
Cons: Class is mainly online, so sometimes it's hard to figure out who is in your class, but if you just watch the lectures and take the practice quizzes, it'll all work out.
Professor England was really easy to email and talk to whenever I had a question, and she will help you figure out how to succeed if you just take the time to ask.

Pros: Easy class, just stay on top of everything.
Cons: hate the math empo. all exams are proctored there.
its an online course, so this has nothing really to do with ms england, it's more of how well you can teach yourself (or cheat with friends haha). i made it the whole year without even looking at the lesson plans, but instead by just taking practice quizzes and figuring it out from them, and then taking the graded quizzes with friends to check our mistakes. got 100s on all the quizzes, and a 90 on the exams, easy A.

This review is of the course, not Jerri England. This course is a math emporium course, so you teach it to yourself. Going the the empo sucks, so luckily you can take the quizzes for this anywhere. You still have to take the tests there. Don't let the beginning of the class trick you, it gets pretty hard (especially the last unit). Don't wait until the deadlines to take the quizzes, otherwise you'll have to rush through them when you could be doing other things.

Jerri doesn't teach this course unless you are enrolled in the honors course, I believe. But Linear Algebra is so easy that it doesn't require an instructor. Just reading the material and doing the weekly quizzes after practicing some will get you a great grade. I left with a 99 because I missed one question on the final exam which was taken from the same pool of questions that the tests were taken from.

Pros: Easy concepts

You can work at your own pace
Cons: quizzes every week (on Saturday)

Online notes are useless

Lectures are boring
This class is so easy, if you practice the problems before the exam. I still passes with an A when I took the quizzes two hours before the deadline after only taking the bare minimum of notes and got 100% on the final. I did spend 12 hours studying in the empo for the final though.
