Ms. Hanks is a really nice lady. This wasn't the first time I took calculus but this was definitely the easiest calculus class I've taken. She posts worksheets that you should definitely print out for all of the classes. They present the material in a very straight-forward manner. You have to keep up with the homework because she gives pop quizzes on the previous night's assignment. Her tests are pretty easy. As long as you understand the concepts you'll do fine on them. She doesn't push you past the basic application and she tells you directly that her test problems aren't as hard as the hardest homework problems. I definitely recommend taking her for 1206. If you've taken integral calculus before this class will be a breeze for you and even if you haven't she's probably the easiest 1206 teacher you could get. If you're looking for a genuine understanding and appreciation for the subject than don't take her, but if you just want to get a decent grade with minimal pain, take her.

Hanks class was good and bad. Good in the fact that there was never any homework due, and you could just copy down the notes for the day, but bad in the fact that every other multivariable class was learning more than you. Her tests are insanely easy, because they are just the homework problems verbatim, but when you get to the common time, nothing makes sense anymore because she has been taking it easy on you all year. You can easily identify which problems are hers on the common time and which are other professors. I got a 100 on her part of the final, and a 60 on the common time half. She said straight up before the final that her average for BOTH PARTS was a 60. AVOID HANKS. Take someone like Hart or Agud if at all possible.

Mrs. Hanks is an awesome teacher; friendly, knows what she's talking about, and always willing to answer questions. Her tests are all fair; if you come to class and DO THE HOMEWORK you'll do just fine. I emphasize homework because I didn't do it before the first test and really didn't do well. But once I started doing the homework, I went from a F to a A- on the second test. If there is something you don't understand on the homework, you can always ask Mrs. Hanks, or else go to the tutoring lab at the Empo. Just do the work!

Lucy Hanks is like your little grandma professor. She is very enthusiastic and tries to make multivariable calculus as appealing to her students as possible. She will sometimes mess up examples in class, but they are usually corrected before everyone gets too lost. Homework is optional, class is optional. There are 6 quizzes based on the homework assignments. Her tests are easy and she tells you the types of problems that will be on them. Excellent professor!

Hanks is a good professor. She sometimes gets a little lost in the examples and makes mistakes that she won't catch until the end of the problem or a students corrects her. Definitely knows her subject and makes herself available with office hours. Grading is fair, collecting homework/quizzes every week. Exams are hard, but if you get them at the Math Empo, you can practice the test as much as you want.

Hanks is a decent teacher that walks you carefully through each lesson and example. Her tests and take home homework quizzes are exactly like her examples from class. The koofers for her class are exactly like her actual tests. I would highly recommend trying to get into her course and reviewing the koofers.

this class was not too bad. Hanks is pretty good and she is a fair grader if you go to her she will help you and you can take the tests at the empo up to 5 times so its not that hard to get a good grade. I recommend taking the computer version of this class

Pros: Good notes
Cons: Hanks doesn't teach material very well.
Multivariable sucks, plain and simple. Hanks knows what she is talking about but doesn't know how to teach it. Teaches like she assumes you already know the material but very nice lady. Good luck.

For calculus, this class isnt too bad. Granted Mrs Hanks is like 1000 years old, she knows the material and teaches it pretty well. I took the 1206C course and I would recommend this over the regular course.

If you sign up for 1206C and end up with professor Hanks be prepared to teach yourself the course. She writes examples on the board with little to no explanation.

Mrs. Hanks is a very nice woman, but I am not a fan of the class. Homework is given almost every night. It's really easy work, but it's one of those classes where she decides to collect the homework the one day that you forgot or just didn't do it. Seeing as how homework is 20%, this can really set you back.

Quizzes are pretty easy. The problem is that they're online. Yeah, you can cheat if you want to. However, it's a lot easier to forget about a quiz when you're chilling than if you go to class and *BOOM* a quiz is handed to you. I happened to forget a couple of them but I still got a decent grade for quizzes. Just make sure you don't forget the due date and time. 15% isn't the biggest deal, but every point helps.

Finally, exams. I read comments on here from 2008 - "her exams are so easy." Well now, all of the exams are universal for all 1205 students. She doesn't make her tests anymore. They're just as difficult as everyone else's, and there's four of them. What I really hated was that I would take exams from one semester before as practice (the real exams) and I would get everything right. They were easy. I would go to the exam all confident-like, and it would be a lot more difficult. Beware.

The last thing about exams is that she does grade the first three herself. I don't understand how she grades, though. The first test we had, I had every answer but one right and showed all of my (correct) work - I got a C. She took 11/12 points off of one question for me "not doing" something that I did do. A lot of other students faced the same problem. The second test, I should have failed, but I managed to get a B+? I do not understand her grading system. The first three exams are worth 15% each. The final (fourth exam) is worth 20%, but if you do better than your worst exam, it counts as 35%, replacing your worst exam grade.

All in all, it's a pretty easy class. As long as you have a good knowledge of calculus (which I did) and don't slack off (I was a slacker...), you can pull off a good grade. If you're good at calculus, you don't even need to crack the book other than to do homework. I would suggest a teacher who grades better, but I am not familiar with other professors so do some research on Koofers.

Pros: -Good Notes

-Homework is reasonable and graded quickly

-Fair instructor

Don't be discouraged by some poor comments above. Anyone who comments poorly on Lucy Hanks is someone who barely paid attention in class, and most likely never fully read or understood the notes and never tried to learn on their own. She gives you good notes, and goes over the hardest problems in class each day, you should know what you need help on immediately, and she grades homework in a reasonable time. If you go into this class with a willingness to learn, then you will do fine. The class does not require large amounts of time trying to understand the material outside of the classroom if you pay attention in class. She also tries to make her tests close to the common time exam so that you will be somewhat prepared, but as any good student knows, the only way to do well on a common time is to study thoroughly.

Pros: - Amazing teacher

- Knows how to teacher very well.

- Very sweet lady.
Cons: NONE
She collects homework to grade, but she gives you the answers to the homework. All you have to do is figure out how to get the answer and you will be find. The homework that she gives you are very basic problems that WILL HELP you LEARN the material. Most of the math professors I had gives very difficult homework that is just too advance for someone who is just learning the material. I agree with all the other reviews that her test are very easy, BUT DO NOT be overconfident and not study. I am an A student but I got a B in this class because I was stupid and did not read the instructions on the test and did not study as carefully. I will say this again, her tests are very easy, BUT DO NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT and not study.

Pros: - Gives out decent notes, until Unit 3.
Cons: - Extremely harsh grader

- Very condescending if you ever ask a question

- Her accent grows rather annoying, but I guess that cannot be helped.

- For review sessions, she pretty much encouraged us to leave, rather than actually reviewing the Unit or the worksheets that she posts on Scholar.
Avoid this teacher! There are better multivariable teachers at VT - a relatively high percentage of people drop her class - and I do not blame them. She grades even the first homework (so if you plan on joining in on the second day of class, good luck.) Her tests are not hard, but the way that she grades the test, it is extremely hard, seeing as she tends to refuse giving partial questions for retroactive mistakes (like adding incorrectly early in the problem.)

Pros: Class Notes
Cons: Sometimes makes mistakes
any calc class with Hanks is great. Her class notes are great, everything you need to know is on there, and the examples resemble the homework problems and she is always helpful when it comes to any question, homework, test, anything. I had her for 1206 and 2224 and for the people her complain about her tendency to make mistakes, those are usually the same people who never pay attention. The mistakes are usually just copying the same line or adding wrong, nothing that actually pertains to the material.
