ESM 2104 - Statics
Best teacher I have had thus far at Tech. He really knows the material and makes examples very engaging. As long as one makes an effort to learn the material and complete the nightly assignments on time, there is no reason why one should receive anything less than a B+

Mr. Hendricks is good at statics. However, what he's good at doesn't necessarily transfer over to a student. The examples used in class are applicable to the first 2 or so homework problems, and then you're on your own. When you're learning comes mostly from guesswork and a textbook, good luck finding the right way to do something without relying on answers, particularly when homework assignments tend to take several hours, and are either due or a quiz is based on them every class. The workload is extreme. The level of work you have to put into grasping basic concepts because Mr. Hendricks didn't do a single complete example is ridiculous. For statics, I advise taking this course somewhere where you aren't 1 of 300. And good luck with that here.

Hendricks is a rough professor, there's no doubt. He knows his subject well, and it's not too hard to understand if you attend all the classes and really make an effort on the homework. The exams, however, are another story. They are about the same difficulty level as the homework, but the grading is an uphill battle. Hendricks is quick to take away points if you don't set up the problem his way and sometimes you can lose extra points even if you got the question wrong. The exam grading is the only reason I don't recommend him, but for the most point, you won't have a choice. Just work hard and show up to every class.

This guy was my only choice for both Statics and Dynamics, which blows big time because he teaches like his students are still in high school. Expect hours of graded homework due every class. Expect incredibly boring classes with a snails pace of learning. Expect to have to wear a name tag. In an effort to prevent cheating, he reviews tests to see if each student has supporting work. He then drops your score if it's not enough. A friend of mine had his grade reduced from an 80 to a 40. The guy didn't cheat. He just didn't bother to draw a free body diagram for every problem. Hendricks is real lame. Avoid if possible.

This class is hard. Assuming you have this class two days per week, you will likely spend about ten hours a week doing homework. The advantage is that if you understand the homework, you ace the quizzes. He gives you the answers to every homework problem so you know if you're doing it right or not.

He has two T.A.s who have good office hours. They were extremely helpful my semester. I probably spent every Monday and Wednesday morning with a T.A. for Statics. Dr. Hendricks has office hours daily, but they were between eleven and noon, so I always had class.

If you do the homework consistantly, you'll be set. The quizzes are just the homeworks with different numbers. Every day of class he either gives a quiz on one of the problems at the beginning, or he collects a problem. Be careful, when he collects, it's usually the one that everyone struggled with.

The problem is that he tends to do more basic problems in class and then you find out later that the homework is a lot more involved, but don't be afraid to ask for help. On my first attempt, I couldn't do half of the homework problems. That's why I was always with the T.A.s, but once I got the help, I always did well. I aced every test but the first one.

He's an excellent teacher, but be ready for a lot of work.

i had him for both statics and dynamics. statics i found to be very easy so I didn't need a lot of teaching, however dynamics (for me atleast) has been much harder and i have found that hendricks teaching has not helped me excel. the tests are much like the homeworks but he tends to throw something in there to mess you up always

Hendricks is an excellent professor although his course policy can be very demanding. There is homework after every class that must be done. During each class he will either collect one homework problem from the set or give a quiz. Whenever he collects a homework problem it is generally one of the harder problems of the homework set. Quizzes are usually one of the easier homework problems with the numbers changed. He does this to force students to go to class and his policies have been fairly effective at forcing students to learn the material but it can be difficult if you're used to classes that don't collect homework and give you a lot of freedom. His teaching style is very good and he knows what he's talking about so it's generally not that painful to go to class. Essentially if you do the homework and go to class you will do alright. Tests often have similar problems to the homework although sometimes there will be problems that aren't solved exactly the same way so you need to really understand the material not just how to solve the problem. Otherwise they are not too bad. I have heard that he sometimes curves grades at the end of the year although he did not curve the last class I had him for and I haven't finished this one yet. The course is demanding but Hendricks is by far one of the better professors to get if you want to do well and understand the material.

Professor Hendricks is a great teacher. His lecture consists of answer questions/going over homework due each day and working out example problems from the next section due the next class period. Either homework is collected or a quiz is given in the beginning of every class (usually he gives more quizzes than collecting homework), and they usually aren't too hard as long as you've done the homework (they basically mirror one homework problem from the set).

As for tests, there are four tests total and a final exam. The first test seemed to be the hardest, but as long as you go to class everyday and do the hw, they shouldnt be too bad. Again, he does a great job explaining new sections and is able to answer questions to clear up any confusions with the material. In terms of curves, the tests themselves aren't curved, but the grading scale is adjusted after the first test (depending on how people do).

All in all, Hendricks is a very good teacher who does a great job getting the material across. If you see him available for a class you need to take, then by all means take his class.

Pros: Puts notes on scholar. If you go to class and pay attention he does a really good job of explaining the material and concepts. He's been teaching this so long he knows the best process for doing each kind of problem and he follows that process for each example just with different numbers and unknowns and this makes it easy to catch on.
Cons: He's a real douche of a person. Like, guy's a dick and hits on girls during his class of 100 kids, "becky you get that one?","becky you keepin up","what did you get on that one becky?" (Becky's the hot girl near the front) its weird.
He's not as bad as people say. If you pay attention and go to class you will get an A. HW is twice a week and on line and you can usually find answers somewhere on the net if you have trouble. You can get away with skipping class and looking just looking at dyknow slides he posts if you are good at physics I.

Cons: He is a harsh grader. He will go over each multiple choice test and take points off for anything that isn't clear to him, even if you got the answer correct.
Statics is probably one of the first "hard" engineering classes. Though Hendricks has been teaching it for around 20 years, he still doesn't teach it well. Everything you learn in statics will be from doing it yourself. You will spend at least 10 hours a week on homework and studying for the class. His tests are very similar to the homework however, so make sure you know how to every homework problem before the test so if you come across one you can breeze through it. The tests are around 90 minutes long and have about 13 questions, so every minute counts. He will also usually put the most missed problem on the last test on the next one, so be sure to review the last test before taking the next one as well.

Dr.Hendricks is a very good teacher, he is knowledgeable and communicates the material well. . The only thing I disagree with his grading policy where if you don't "sufficient work" on the tests you get points taken off even if you get the answer right. Before I took statics, I kept hearing horror stories of how it is a very difficult class, thats a load of BS, Statics is not that hard if you put the effort into it. The tests are based of the homework, so as long as you do the homework, and understand them, you will be able to do just fine in statics. The homework is very time-consuming though, but it pays off on the tests.

Pros: He's teaches the material fairly well
Cons: He is out to fail students. If you go to his office hours he will not help you. Probably the worst thing about this professor is his tests. They are multiple choice but if you get a problem correct he can still take a lot of points away if you do not show your work EXACTLY how he prefers it to be done. If you get a problem wrong because of a simple miscalculation but still approached the problem correctly you will get zero points. So he will take away points for right answers but will not award partial credit.
Awful professor, has no respect for his students.

If you stay on top of your homeworks and take good notes in class, you'll find that Professor Hendricks teaches the material quite well, and he is always willing to help.

Do not just wait until the last minute to learn the material. It is much more difficult and stressful to be a C student playing 'catch-up' in his class than it is to be an A student if you can stay on top of your assingments and pay attention.

Take this class seriously, and use the koofers to prepare for exams. If you can solve all of the koofer problems without using the solutions, you should be in good shape.

This is one of the hardest classes here.If you want a good grade you have to work at it, plain and simple. The first 2 tests are a lot of stuff learned in physics 2305 so it may be easy for some at first, but after that it's pretty much all new material and it is challenging. Dr. Hendricks knows everything there is to know about dynamics and he goes about teaching it with the philosophy of 'you will struggle with it but it will help you learn better'. If you have a solutions manual, don't use it. Hendricks is known to take the most people to honor court every year.

Statics is a tough class - no question. And Hendricks sets high standards - he works hard to make sure that no one cheats his way through the class, but if you do all the work yourself, without copying, you'll do fine. Make sure to do 3 or 4 Koofers tests before each exam and you'll do fine. He likes putting the same problem on more than one test if everyone did poorly on it the last time, so make sure to review the hard problems from earlier in the semester. In all, this will be a tough class, but do the homework, and the study smart for tests, and you'll be fine.

Hendricks may seem like a jerk sometimes in class but is actually a really nice guy if you go to his office hours. He is very understanding if you have a medical/family emergency. Expect to go to the TAs (who are very helpful) somewhat frequently for ESM 2104 and 2304 if you have Hendricks. The good news is if you understand the homework then the tests will be VERY easy and you'll do well. If you don't understand the homework then the tests will seem impossible, so do the homework and make sure that you understand it!

He's alright at teaching. It's definitely handy to know someone that's already had the class, then you can look at their homework solutions. The nametag thing is a little annoying, but nothing too bad. Take the koofer he gives and go over homework, that's where he gets his test. Any examples he does in class are fair game too. He also either collects homework or gives a quiz that's exactly like the homework. So as meaningless as it feels to do the homework, it's always a good idea.

Dr. Hendricks is a fairly decent professor. I absolutely hated the class, not because of him, but because of the amount of work and effort you need to put into it. There are homeworks due every class, and it is graded about 95% of the time. If he doesn't collect one of the 5 hw problems you did that took 15 min a piece, he will give a pop quiz on one of the problems, but change around numbers. If you do the hw and devote a good amount of time to this class, you should be able to get an A or B.

He is a great statics teacher. The class takes a ton of time, but is very worth it at the end. He does not curve, but the homework is exactly the same problems that are on quizzes(which happen in every class) and on tests. Do all the homework on your own. The solutions manuel only hurts you in the end. Work hard on all the homework and you will make it out alive the first time. Also, he drops some of the homework and gives plenty of tests so one brain fart will not hurt too bad. Goodluck!

He's a very smart man and knows how to teach. You can tell he's been doing this for a long time. His class is very straightforward, homework is due every class and you will have a quiz or hw taken up every class. Tests are hard because there only around 12 questions and if you dont understand one diagram you got yourself a C. Good thing is his scale is pretty fair. An A stops at 86, got a small B range and a Big C range. You'll learn a lot from him.

People might say bad things about this class or about Hendricks but he is a great teacher and the class isn't too difficult. All you need to do is go to class everyday and have your homework done. I fell behind and got lazy and my grade suffered a little but once I started to focus I had a 100 homework average. Don't be lazy and this "hard" class won't be hard. All the people who take it multiple times don't go to class.
