I also recommend going to see him if you have questions- he is good about explaining things and it will only help improve your grade. If you have an A average after the first 2 tests you don't have to take the final. He gives attendance quizzes though that count for 10% of your grade so it's worth it to go to class even if you don't pay attention.

It is easy to get an A or B in the class if you really study the problems and the notes. Take the 9:30 verses the 8AM. He was boring at 8 in the morning and the only reason you want to go to class is because he has pop attendance quizzes which are 10% of your grade.

Can't say enough about this guy. A true character, makes classes entertaining, has a serious addiction to Dr. Pepper, has hilarious stories in class.
The class itself is set up to where you have 2-3 tests and on the 3rd test he makes the lowest possible grade a 75. Meaning even if you don't take the final exam, you get a 75 on it. Which is very generous to say the least. Exams are tough, often tricky, come to class and do the problems he does in class to review. Also take advantage of koofers, because he pulls a lot of the exact same questions from the koofers and sticks them on his tests.
This class isn't a huge time committment though, get the book, work on the problems and SHOW up to class. You'll be fine champ!

Pros: VERY generous curves
Cons: it's finance. enough said.
I HATED the material Dr. Keown taught. I'm not a finance person. I did poorly on the first test but he curves very generously and because I did just below the average my 60something on that test ended up being a C. After that test I realized the majority of his questions come from "my finance lab". I studied that and memorized how to do all the problems from that (as well as studying my notes of course) for the second test and got a 97. So I can't stress enough the importance of studying the material in "my finance lab" -- the vast majority of all the computation questions come straight from that and will be in the exact same form, just with the numbers changed.
I never read the book for this class. It was too dry and I didn't feel it really enhanced my understanding of the material. You don't need the book to do well-- I do however recommend my finance lab and I don't know if you can buy that separately from the book.
Dr. Keown himself is a wonderful person. Very funny and enjoyable. He is generous in his grading, lots of curves and lots of options for weighting your tests grades and also the option of not taking the final if you don't need to. I can't really rate how well he taught the material though given that I don't think I'd follow the logic regardless of how it was taught.

Makes an 8 am possible, except the few times he put in a video! Hilarious at times. Curves a ton and you don't have to take the final if you have a high enough average. He weights grades in a very weird way but it is beneficial to you. You can do well on one test and badly on another and your weight is based mostly on the test you did well on. Just go to class, you need to to do well. Problems on the test are the exact same as the ones from the book just with numbers changed.

The 8am part sucks, but he makes the material as interesting as possible. You have to remember - the actual stuff you're learning is boring as hell... he can only do so much w/ it. He has a great grading system that helps you as much as possible, and there is usually a 5-10 point curve on each test. Be sure to go to class, because the class attendence quizzes can come back to bite you later if you missed a few

You could make a drinking game out of the number of times he says "let's see if we can try to make some kind of sense out of all this" and "with regards to" and "Dr. Pepper".

I am a finance major and took this at the same time as 3134 so this class was basically pointless for me. But for others, Keown is a pretty laid back guy but he tests pretty hard. The koofers he gives you are a great representation of the test. He does do attendence quizzes which are worth a percentage point to your FINAL grade EACH. You also cannot get out of the final if you have missed any classes. My advice: bust your ass for the first two tests and get out of the final by ahving an A and no missed classes.

This class can be difficult. The professor's lectures can sometimes be very boring, though he does try to add in some humor now and again. He is very much obsessed with the drink Dr. Pepper, even added it as a test question on his test. (Dr. Pepper was the obvioius choice). If you see the answer none of the above on his tests, you can usually assume that is not the answer. (He said that one semester, but that COULD change) He goes over the homework problems, but doesn't collect them. (At least Fall 07's semester)

I literally only went to class on exam days and taught myself how to do everything from the textbook. I did hear many stories about how great of a teacher he was and how exciting his lectures were, but I had a job and was normally too tired to go to class. Despite not going to class and also not even studying a single hour for one of his tests I still received a B and it was just an overall very easy class. I think if I had gone, it would have been great. The subject matter is very useful for all majors!

This teacher is wonderful. He is very knowledgable and experienced with getting information to students. To me, the subject was a bit boring, but I am glad I had Keown to teach it. Going to class wasn't all to bad. He tells you exactly what you need to learn, and gives plenty of examples. All of the information is there. If you take the time to learn it, you will do alright.
My only complaint is that his handwriting is often very hard to read. But the positives outweigh that dramatically.

Pretty cool little guy. Knows his stuff and gives you four different ways to weight your grades, and picks the best one for your final grade. Only work is 3 tests and attendance quizzes so make sure to study. The class is 3 hours long but you need to stay all the way through in case he decides to "screw the guys who left early out of an attendance point." He curves the tests up to a 78 and won't let anyone make below a 70 on the final-that's the minimum you can get on the final.

Everyone says how easy Intro to Finance is; however, it is by no means an "easy A". You should definitely go to class and learn how to do all the math problems. He seems to be somewhat unfair at times with his "exceptions" to the rules for certain students. Definitely study a LOT for the first 2 exams so that you are exempt from the Final. His material has not changed in at least the last 5 years so get anyones stuff that has taken the class before.

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Keown. He is truly a class act! I was very glad to see a Professor want to see his class succeed as Dr. Keown does. The curves he applies are very helpful. In the end I didn't have to take the final, due to his grading scale and automatic guarantee of a 70 for everyone. Definitely take Dr. Keown for FIN 3104. Work hard to get good scores on the first two exams and attend class and you'll do well.

Dr. Keown is the man. Just go to class for the attendance quizzes and his jokes and do all of the practice problems and read over the notes from class before the exams and after the curve your grade will be fine. His exams are a bit tricky, but if you invest the time in doing the homework problems until you really get them, you shouldn't have a problem getting an A in this course.

I read a review that all you really do in class is learn how to use a financial calculator. It is so true, thats all you really learn. He REALLY tries to get everyone to pass and get a good grade so it shouldn't be hard to pass. Also, he gives you his home phone number to call him whenever, except during Ugly Betty. haha. He's a character, he'll make you laugh every class.

Great professor that makes some difficult subject into a tolerable one. He's very laid back, humorous, and enthusiastic about teaching. However, this doesn't complete reflect onto the exams, as they can be a bit tricky, and he'll let you know that as well at the beginning of the term. He'll go out of his way to help a student that needs help, in and out of his office.

This professor is hilarious. The material is pretty easy if you pay attention and have at least some intelligence. The only thing that sucks is the attendance quizzes, but otherwise, he drinks at least 2 Dr. Peppers a class, curves pretty much everything you hand in and spends half of class talking about random stories of his. Good class!

He is a really funny teacher who loves Dr. Pepper. It is really important to go to class to understand the material because he explains it really well and will use the examples that he goes over in class on the tests. Also he give extra credit for attendance so that is also a good reason to attend class.

Engineer who took class for business minor. One of the easiest classes I've ever had. He doesn't collect homework. Tests are straight from lecture material. If you have a 92 test average and perfect attendance you are exempt from final. Didn't really learn anything but it was an easy A.
