Attendance was required but the material she went over in class was useless. The test questions seemed to be from the textbook company. I did the online quizzes from the textbook website and easily got an A.

I totally slept through Exam 2 on excel and still got an A!! I'm not kidding, I took this class Fall 2006 and received a zero on exam 2. The way to get an solid easy A is to take the practice quizzes on blackboard until you get 100's every time, then go to the books website and take those practice quizzes on the chapters you will be tested on until you get 100's every time. The questions on the exams are word for word from the online practice quizzes. You need to do the assignments on Microsoft Office completely... some take a good amount of time and review her slide notes once/twice, depending on how familiar you are with Microsoft Office. Thats pretty much it, however, you still need to go to every lecture (try not to fall asleep, but thats not essential) and get all the extra credit points. You do not have to read/study the book at all unless you don't take the online quizzes. My exam grades were 96 on exam 1, 0 on exam 2, 98 on exam 3, and 98 on the Final. With the extra credit and all the assignments I got an A for the course. Good luck and the most important thing is to do the practice quizzes online!! Oh, and don't sleep through any of the exams because you will have to have near perfect scores to make up for the lost points and Jean will not let you make up tests without a letter from the Dean of Pamplin.

Pros: -Jean is very knowledgeable and is very passionate about what she teaches -Very good with teaching the information -Good about telling you what's on the test -Excellent power point lectures
Cons: -Boring if you are not into computers -Have to take this class if you are a business major -The second excel project is difficult and confusing -There is a lot of homework, but you need to make sure you it and also do the extra credit; extra credit pays off in the end -Her tests can have a lot of information on them
Make sure to study her power points for her test. The book that is mostly used is her book on the projects for her tests. Also, make sure to do all of the extra credit because it helps your grade in the end. It could be a difference in a letter grade.

Pros: The website she has created for the class makes things pretty straightforward. Jean is pretty organized so that is nice.
Cons: Jean is way too concerned about what professor rating sites such as koofers or ratemyprofessor say about her, so she changes her class according to what these sites say. She also talks way too fast in class which makes you not want to go because you cant possibly take good notes based on how fast she covers the material. Likewise, the textbook is incredibly dry if you aren't interested in computers, databases, and information systems, etc., and the tests were pretty hard based on the material in the book and what she covered.
I would not recommend this class for anyone other than business majors. The projects are easy and straightforward, but the tests are slightly difficult, and the class is BORING and early. The most helpful review is no longer relevant so honestly, take it from someone who got an A in the class now, I would completely disregard that. You need to read the textbook and take meticulous notes because some of her questions on the test are extremely specific, and you need to go to class and take good notes (good luck with that) as well.

Although everyone likes to call her "Mean Jean," she's really not all that bad. All you have to do is go to class to get her extra credit points (they add up to an extra 20 points in the end, which can make or break an entire letter grade if you want it to...), and make sure you take the practice online quizzes. The website that corresponds with the book has practice quizzes, and if you take those, you'll have a guaranteed A or B. I know I went to class, slept, downloaded the powerpoints, did the practice quizzes, read when I felt like it, and ended up with a solid A.

Her homework is ridiculously easy, and her little projects on Excel, Powerpoint and Access are also really easy if you follow her instructions, which dumb down the material to an extreme.

Granted, she's not a very nice person, but you got to give her a little credit. She's probably teaching the most boring class ever at 8 and 9:15 AM to a bunch of kids who probably don't care. I know I didn't. My advice... go to class, sit in the back, fill out your opscan, take a nap, and you're golden.

Lacoste is a very high strung person but she is very knowledgeable in the subject material. That being said this class is totally pointless but is mandatory of all business majors. The class covers topics such as how to make a powerpoint presentation, excel spreadsheet, and a lot of technical jargon that you will never use again. I don't think I came away with anything particularly useful but some of the application review is helpful. There is a good deal of homework and those are some of the easiest points to get. Simply completing the assignments will a fractional degree of accuracy will give you the full credit. For each class you go to you will get 1 point of extra credit up to 20 points which equals 5 percentage points on the final. The tests are very straightforward just study the online quizzes and you'll be set. This will not be your favorite class but suck it up because everyone has to take it.

She is very hard to pay attention to so early in the morning. She rambles on and on about the subject and doesn't seem to try and make it very interesting. If you go to class, read a little bit, and take good notes, you should do fine on the exams. The homework assignments are VERY easy and so are the extra credits on them so DO IT! It is a great grade booster. Also, the projects are easy and so are the extra credits on those. So DO IT! Other than that, it's a relatively tough class because it is hard to follow the subject matter and feel interested. So long as you do all of the reading, take great lecture notes, and do all the projects and respective extra credit, you can pull off an A no problem.

I found her to be okay. Talk to her outside of class and she is nice and friendly. Just talk about Ebay with her and she'll like you forever I think. homeworks are fair...Tests are hard but somewhat tedious. She knows it's a boring class and when I took it gave extra credit for going to class. Those extra credit points will matter in your grade. I barely got a C because of them. Study hard!

Pros: Unnecessarily large amounts of time to complete projects

Very open/friendly when you visit her office

Final is optional because it increases grade by only 1% (this may be new or situational by semester, ask about it)
Cons: Literally the worst 'textbook' I've ever read from - dry, feels outdated even though it's new, I can't even remember what I learned from it

Only 1 point extra credit on projects; she will NOT pad your grade by any other means, no matter how borderline your letter grade is

The letter grades are only A, B, C, etc. So A-, B+, etc. do no exist

Terrible class, but she does a presentable job as a teacher. I had a lot of difficulty motivating myself not to skip her class. If you can, at least go in with your computer, with the lecture powerpoint on it, and follow along. Brownie points if you type notes under each slide, because that means you're actually engaging with whatever dull topic is being taught. I promise, it'll help if you at least learn something that morning. Trust me, it'll help for when it comes time to knuckle down and read the text for the exam and you find yourself wondering, "What the hell is this I'm reading?"

Jean knows what she's talking about and is interested in the subject, but is very annoying. Her voice is very unpleasantly high and intense. Her lectures are very boring and notes are posted online. She never takes attendence.

I went to all classes leading up to the first exam, and realized I had wasted my mornings by getting up for the class. Hardly anything on the test was from her notes - most of it is from the book's companion website (Practice Quizzes online). I stopped going to class after that. So, if you read the book and take the online quizzes, you'll know basically just as much for the test as someone who attends class regularly.

I would say it does help slightly to attend, but it'll only make maybe a 4-6% difference in your exam average.

I also hate how her grading scale is either A, B, C, D, or F. Nothing in between (no minuses of pluses).

Pros: Her tests are very straightforward, if you read the book and go over the lectures, you will get an A or B on the test.

The projects are incredibly easy and require the basic, minimal knowledge of Microsoft software (PowerPoint, Excel, and Access (she teaches Access)).
Cons: This is not a class you can sleep through. Her lectures are powerpoint slides, and they are only outlines of what she will say. Most of them are "lecture only", meaning the details she gives on those is more than likely going to be on the tests. She also doesn't let you know which ones are lecture only (if there are any) in advance. You only find out if you go to class.
She's a great professor, very nice, very friendly, knows her stuff, shows up early in case you have questions, offers help sessions with the projects, and doesn't test you unfairly. Do the work, and you're good to go.

Pros: Jean Lacoste has the nickname "mean jean" but after taking her class I do not understand this nickname. I actually thought she was really nice and good at explaining the material. I highly recommend going to her for the excel projects..she helps SO MUCH and practically tells you the right answers. You have to study hard to do really well on her tests though. If you do all of your homework, study for the tests, read the chapters, take the practice quizzes, and get help from her on the projects you should do well in this class. It sounds like a lot but it isn't that hard to get an A if you try. She only gives grades A-F (no +s or -s) so that can really help you or really hurt you.

haha good old Mean Jean. she tries acting mean but shes really too nice to do anything bad to you. her class is a breeze if you show up from time to time. do your hw and for her tests take the self study quizzes over and over. only the multiple choice sections tho. never any short response. lots of tests lets you save a bad hw grade. if you're in business majors here you'll have to take her class shes the only one but its easy. show up do your stuff easy A. if you dont do the hw or study quizzes you'll have a hard time. her inclass quizzes are for attendance only. your grade wont count except for extra points. showing up counts for extra credit most of the time

For one, it takes her about 5x the normal sentence length to say one simple sentence. Also she changed her test format from the first test being all based on actual information learned from the book (which I did well on without attending class) to being all about random videos watched in class (as in the answer was: the video was about baking)... which I failed. So basically no one goes to class, no one actually knows how to do the homeworks... but you'll get through it. And I'm sure going to class and reading the Microsoft Office books are a great help. I wouldn't know.

I'm not sure how Jean gets the nickname mean because she seemed really accommodating to me. She really listens to student's suggestions and wants them to do well. The powerpoints only have about 50% of the required information, so going to class is pretty much a must in order to do well. Every homework and project offers easy extra credit to help boost your grade. Tests count for 40, 30, and 20 percent of your grade with your highest counting for 40%. She often played interesting videos too. Some exam questions are hard and not covered in class, but overall, not a bad class

Overall, not a bad experience. Her tests had some difficult questions, but if you read over the book, understand the concepts on the slides she presents in class, and do well on the homework, you should be fine. The first few HW application activities are easy, then Excel and Database are a but more complicated. I would definitely recommend attending class regularly. She includes things on the exams that could have only been know by those who attended the lecture. Online question help in preparation as well. For our class, no curve or extra credit opportunities.

shes average when it comes to teaching. the good thing is you dont have to go to class. alot of her exam questions are practice test questions from the book website and some of her homeworks might require some time and effort but most are easy. she knows alot in her field but she is a bit monotone and she only teaches early classes so theres a good chance you will fall asleep if you go to class.

its just like any other lecture class - jean has nothing to do with how well your grade is. it depends if you read the book, and go to class to get the addition information. she teaches right out of the book, so just read it before class, then when she explians it all in class you'll get it. the homework is graded, but mostly just on comletion, she doesnt read your answers.

Exams aren't too bad if you study and went to class, but each is harder than the previous one. The projects can usually be completed in an hour or two and they have minimal impact on your grade anyway. It is difficult to make it to class because it's so early in the morning, the topic can be dull, and she doesn't take attendance but it is definitely worth it to go to class.
