Hotel/Resort Operations Seminar
1*
Pros: The class is hybrid and there are 2 tests, both being take home. He posts the power points online and even does video lectures.
Cons: He is very, very unorganized. Does not follow the course schedule at all. By week 5 we were supposed to have had a test and go on a field trip, none of which we had done. He was able to take his spa class on a field trip to the Montage, but wasn't able to take his hotel class. Montage is a HOTEL.

Although he does post his power points, they are not posted until 10 minutes before class. Makes class go by really slow since no one can participate.

He has a rude and inappropriate demeanor about him.

Dean Finestein and Associate Dean Godfrey should never have allowed him to teach this class. He should stick to what he is good at- spas.

has lots of experience in hospitality industry, not an organize teacher, never reply your email, doesn't know how to teach, doesn't seem to be prepared for class, never return assignments/quiz, he uses blackboard but never updates it including your grades, you will never know your grade in his class until the end of the quater, boring lecture, always feel sleepy in his class, and he gets mad easily so AVOID him if you can!!!!!

Peter Anderson is the worst teacher at Cal Poly. He is lazy! He expects his students to arrive on time, yet he cannot hold himself to that standard. His lectures are pointless. If you have worked int he industry for more that a few months, your experience will out weigh his. He claims at the beginning of the quarter to use blackboard, but he only posts outdated PowerPoint presentations and never shares grades. Anderson frequently interrupts class to single out students who are simply asking a classmate for assistance. He allowed the class to not take the final and use the higher of the two midterm scores. How can this guy call himself a professional educator? DO NOT take his classes, he needs to be fired! Grade Received: A

Pros: Hybrid class.

Online midterm and final
Cons: Extremely unorganized.

Unclear with his assignments
This professor was the most unorganized professor I've ever had.

He didn't even know his own assignments that he assigned or the due dates. He never posted any grades and NEVER gave clear instructions on Blackboard or his syllabus. I highly do not recommend him as a professor. The class content itself was interesting.

Pros: -classes once a week
Cons: -its impossible to get an A no matter how smart you are or how hard you try. he just refuses to give A's or something.
HOLY omg i never write reviews ever ever ever for products or teachers or ANYTHGIN. but i really need to rant cuz i just hate him so much. its week 10, he NOW gives us everything we've done in the entire quarter so you really don't know if you're failing or not until the last week. his lectures are so stupid, you'll learn more with just the book. his tests are so unnecessarily tricky like he's purposely trying to find ways to fail us. his entire course is literally dependent on group work, and we can't even choose our group so literally if you have a sucky group, there goes ur grade. so one of my group members was suppose to print our paper and was dumb enough to print BLANK PAGES except the first page, so he gave us an F. we tried to fight for our grade cuz we had proof that we hadn't edited it since the day it was due and we had it ready, but he literally would not let us talk and just kept saying 'THIS IS WHAT YOU GAVE ME. THIS IS WHAT I GRADED. END OF STORY' he wouldnt even let us talk. this is so unfair and stupid and we're really considering going to the dean cuz this is ridiculous he is such a douche and can't teach and ugh. i had no choice because there were no more 203 courses available during the quarter.

First, If you are an average student and you wanna take this class, you have a great chance to get grades that below your expects. The reason I say he wont give grades fairly are he didnt turn all exams and projects back on time, and he wont post your scores on BB. According to other class, you cant tracking your grades on BB, so how do students know he really gives students a CORRECT grades. In this quater, he also messed up his lecture and schedule. He used other professor's slides, and he didnt even correct the contents. Once, he went through 4 chapters in 3 hours, and gave us an exam in the following class with very little help. Sometimes, he may forget giving students sample questions via email. Also, he rarely replies emails cuz you may be blocked. He is not helpful for anyone who really want to learn something in this area. Most field trips are not in class priod and he wont give student extra points for the field trips. You can skip them cuz he wont take attendance, so dont waste your time and life to go to field trips. If I have a chance again, I won his class. Grade Received: C

His class is extremely boring with his PowerPoint lectures. There are 30 slides each time and he spends like 5 minute on each. He takes up the whole time in class, but he is on time about getting people out of class. You don't really get much out of the class at all though. For the exams, he basically just copy and paste information from his own PowerPoints for the review sheet and that's what is basically on the test. You don't need the book really, but maybe just to skim it or get more information and examples. He is definitely not a nice friendly teacher though. In class he would make it seem like he wants to help students, but I don't think that is the case.

There was one time when someone from a club came in to deliver a candy gram, she had to wait till everyone gets there to know who to deliver it to. she took 1 min to make the announcement and he totally chewed her out about taking up the class time to do that. Who cares? It was one minute. It's not like he would say anything much helpful in that one minute. He was just so mean about it. Grade Received: B

I had two classes with Anderson back to back (304 and 276). Personally I think for 304 he knew very little about the material. He seemed to struggle with his own powerpoints. There is a group project on this class that requires you to visit a hotel and write a paper and give a presentation. It isn't very clear what he wants out of the paper, and you never really know if you're doing something right in his class. I actually felt that way about 276 too. There's a group project in that class that is harder and he claimed he would go over the spreadsheets with you and tell you how to do them, but he NEVER did. He seemed to know very little about the subjects dealt with in both classes. He's very picky about being on time and attendence. My best advice is to not take this professor, but if you have to...read the book and go to class. The tests are easy if you read the book, and the group projects are easy if you get a good group. But overall he's not a very good teacher and I didn't learn anything from him. Grade Received: B+

This class is a joke. Everyone told me not to take it, so I was worried- I shouldn't have been, it is SO elementary school I literally learned nothing and he treats us like we've never heard of a hotel.

I recommend taking this if you need an easy class. You do have a group project though where you have to observe three different hotels for checkin, checkout, and night audit. It really wasn't that bad. You'll find you will go, take a picture, write a few paragraphs while you're there and you're done.

The only thing I really disliked about Anderson is that he encourages "class participation" but when you raise your hand he NEVER agrees with your answer or comment or example, and its really disheartening. Our group finally came to the conclusion that he doesn't know the answers himself so he makes you look stupid to feel better. I know that sounds bad, but its really what it seems like.

Also do not talk in his class- he has a reputation for getting angry and he will yell at the class for simply whispering.

This is the worst teacher I have ever had. I am sorry for those who still have to take him, especially for this class. The main problem is the project. He assigns this project that has to do with Kellogg West, and says it is a quarter-long project, but he never gave us ANY information on what was expected of us or outline or anything until week 8 of the quarter. He is a major procrastinator in this class. My group ended up pulling the project together the last week, and then he sits in class and makes all these comments about how we are slackers because we haven't started on it yet. He ended up cutting down a lot of what we had to turn in, but only because someone gave him crap about it. He has 2 tests, both of which have questions that are worded very unclearly. The class also isn't what you'd expect. It's just like HRT101 part 2. It doesn't focus specifically on hotels at all. For those who have to take this class with him, good luck.

ughhh. anderson can be both nice and a pain at the same time. it's kind of annoying. he expects you to go to field trips and never be late even if you have a class prior to his. considering that the locations of the field trips are FAR AWAY FROM CAL POLY, he still wants us to be prompt. if you're 5 mins late.. FIVE MINUTES!!!!! he won't give credit. that's what happened to me and it is the reason why i got a D. it's ridiculous. as for his tests, mult q. and t/f. read the book, it's MUCH HELPFUL rather than looking over his powerpoints. (which are useless). one thing though.. he doesn't require you to take the final if you're satisfied with your grade. so thats ok. he also does give few bonus points on tests when most of the students got the same question wrong. Gluck with him. get on his good side! Grade Received: D

i yi yi...i could honestly say this prof. was the worse hrt teacher out there..omggg for a freshman/soph. course he acted like this was some upper division course!!! he is crazy! he grades unfairly and doesn't even tell you why! when you ask him why you got the grade you got he makes up BS reasons like "i dont grade by the pound but this is weak!" ...when he DOES grade by the pound! he doesnt evn read ur papers he just randomly puts a grade in the front and his writings on your paper are messy and unreadable...just do urself a favor..& dont take him....=/

}side note: you will have to do these gay city assignment projects he does not tell you wat hes expecting basically everything you do in the class is a gamble..work your ass off for a C or B!!?!?! wtf?!?! ya....again...DONT TAKE HIM!!! Grade Received: B-

All projects are group projects:

2 projects are small and easy: visit hotel, answer questions from paper regarding design, take pictures, make a PowerPoint for presentation.

the other project is a lot bigger: do something smaller (restaurant, cafe, club) instead of a huge hotel (like my group did). We still did great but I think the smaller one would've been easier to get into detail.

exams are pretty easy. you get a study guide too. study and memorize study guide, powerpoint, and textbook (about 4 chapters worth for the whole quarter)

no attendance

dislikes when student talk during lecture

does not grade your stuff until class is completely over.. I had no idea what my grade would be.. it doesn't even get updated on blackboard.. but I checked 'grades' on broncodirect and I have an A-

AVOID AT ALL COSTSS!!!!

I rarely ever say that about a professor, but honestly I've never had a professor talk to his students the way he does. He makes you feel like you're dumb when all you had was a question--or have him explain something. I took this class when he first started teaching it and it was a hybrid. We had group quizzes every time we met except for when we had tests. We had three tests and they were fairly hard but we were allowed a cheat sheet (not sure if he does this anymore). There is one project...and it is a TON of work. And you better master food costing because you definitely need it in the restaurant series.

You really need to have an amazing group that knows their shit to pass.. or else you are doomed. So do yourself a favor and do not take him!!

I disagreed with the other student about this prof. He is indeed kinda unorganized because of his other jobs but he tried his best to make all the student happy. His powerpoint slides are kinda of dry and class can be boring sometimes. However, he let people reschedule their exam if he/she cannot come to an exam date. Study his exam reviews, they are really helpful and you can get a good grade by just studying those. In addition, he let students discuss the each exam (except the final) the next class and he gives extra points. The whole class got like 6-8 points additional to their grades. Kinda hard to talk to him at first, but he is really nice after u get to know him. His research paper is really easy to do. Grade Received: A-

Pros: It's only once a week

your first test is online

its a hybrid course
Cons: Yo I know it's only the first day of class but he's already made our class feel stupid 4 times and we aren't even half way through. He is very loud, he kinda looks like a baked potato but that isn't really important right now. He is very loud, he is a bit set in his ways and he likes the sound of his own voice. I have ten more weeks so who knows what will happen but right now, it is not looking good my friends. Take the class with warning.
2 exams, 50% of your grade

you have to take multiple field trips to hotels to asses the property layout & design.

You get to "pick" your groups but not really because he doesn't want you to be in groups with your friends.

This Professor is always unprepared and lazy. He was falling asleep during our presentations!!! How is he going to grade us if he is not listening to what we are saying! He never gives any grades out and never returns papers back so when the quarter is over you won't know what your grades is. He has an attitude problem and is rude to the students. His syllabus is not correct, he will change things or cancel without alerting us on certain assignments and then last minute he tells the class that it is due. This happened to us, he cancelled a trip to a hotel and then last minute told us we had a presentation about the fieldtrip when we were all under the impression it was cancelled. I WILL NEVER TAKE HIS CLASSES AGAIN!!

oh no no no..

well, this teacher might be a nice person but can be a pain in some occasions... lectures are all from powerpoint which is kind of lame. just read the book, it's much better, and it'll help you tremendously for the tests. the test is 50/50.. multiple q's, and t/f... you must go to the field trips early or else he wont give you points.. and he expects you to be on time even if you have a class prior to the field trip... so beware! in my own personal opinion, though, i did not like this teacher as much as i liked other hrt professors that i have so far taken. even professor palmer was better!
