Overall, I recommend Dr. James C. Bassett for the MHR course. Dr. James Bassett is an excellent speaker. Dr. Bassett can go on and on and he should not bore you to death. There were few times when the lecture goes off-topic and Dr. Bassett digresses. He shares with us his work experience (Disneyland and Corporporations) and his accomplishments (co-founder of Princeton Review but Dr. Bassett sold and moved on).

}The course I've taken was MHR 318 - Organizational Behaviour. Dr. Bassett does not take attendance and after the first two weeks, about 40 to 50% of the students did not show up (it was an evening class afterall).

Two midterms and a final. All multiple choice scantron exam. There is one group assignment where four to six students team up and need to write on a case. During the last two weeks, each group gives a formal presentation. Format as in dress in business attire and appear as businessmen and businesswomen. Few lectures are based on powerpoint and overhead and most of the times, he lectures in front of class. You can pass his course by reading the textbook and not showing up on class but Dr. Bassett's lecture is amusing so show up and learn something.

IMPORTANT Peer Evaluation - From my past experience, peer evaluation is critical to your final grade since it is an "Organizational Behaviour MHR" class. During your quarter, you meet with your group and work on your group assignment. Do your best. The professor does not tell you how much percentage the group peer evaluation is worth and the syllabus does a poor job at it too.

There is one extra credit assignment that you can work on.

There were two midterms and a final for the class, all of which are graded. These come mainly from the bullet points from his powerpoints and word-for-word from the textbook. Even still, the tests are VERY hard; thank god he curves them. For my section, he missed coming to the final exam and had to reschedule it, but made it optional (and only able to increase your grade standing) because he "goofed." Grade Received: A

Dr. Bassett is a great lecturer, especially compared to most at Cal Poly! He is knowledgeable and is always willing to help students with their projectts.

}His project, however, consumes most of the class time and you won't get lectures the last half of class. The project has mini presentations thorughout the quarter and really comes together at the end if you follow his instructions.

}He IS NOT the teacher for you if you do not want to read the book. It is very boring and very important in class evaluation. He curves well, but the tests are very difficult. Grade Received: A

Dr. Bassett is AWESOME .. Seriously one of the best Professor's I've had at Cal Poly Pomona since I've been here .. He's very knowledgeable about the subject and loves to teach (you just have to put up with his corny stories he likes to tell sometimes hahaha). The course material isn't too challenging and he curves his exams! I highly recommend! Grade Received: A

I really enjoyed his class, a bit tedious, but nothing college students should be able to handle. Very witty, fun and cool professor. Teaching methods actually help students learn. Out of all the MHR teachers I would rate him the best!

Professor Bassett is a very nice man, however, he can be a bit unorganized at times. He will keep you THE FULL class time without a break, so be prepared if you have a late class. The class consists of mini group projects every week, a few take home assignments, and 2 midterms and a final. I do not think he really grades the take home or group assignments, but rather just checks for completeness. The in-class assignments are pretty easy, and you do find some interesting software, but it is typically pretty boring. As for the tests....THEY ARE RIDICULOUSLY difficult! Literally, it is STRAIGHT from the text. Memorize the book because it is almost like filling in the blank for one word from a sentence. Especially memorize bullet points and charts. He will curve and will offer 1 extra credit assignment. But be prepared, during our quarter, he forgot we had a midterm so we had to take it the next class and he did not even show up for our final, so be prepared for anything in this class. This instructor is awesome. You can tell from the moment he enters the room that he loves to teach and that he cares about his students and their accomplishments. There are 2 midterms, 1 final, and 1 group project. The midterms and finals are very difficult (must study by reading chapters), but he grades on a curve using the highest grade as the 100% and going down from their. The questions are very tricky in that they are not just about terms and definitions, you must know how to use the words in real world situations. The group project is challenging mainly because you have to work as a group for the entire project (not separate the work), except for during the presentation. If you are looking for an instructor that cares about Human Resources, then this is the instructor for you. Just remember to study! Grade Received: A

Professor Bassett is very knowledgeable, and he grades fairly. Your grade will be based upon the highest score archieved by any student. For instance, the highest score of the 1st exam is 80%, students who get 80% is an automatic 100%, which is an A, and if you score 90% or more of 80%, you will get an A also. The exams are textbook based, so read the book, cover the material and you will do fine. There are mini presentations every other week and there is also a final project which worth a lot of points. It is like a summary of what you've done for the whole quarter, but if you follow his instructions throughout the quarter, you don't really have to do much for that. Overall, I recommend Professor Bassett to every MHR student. Grade Received: A

Dr. Bassett is a wonderful teacher, arguably the best I've had at Cal Poly. If you're an MHR major (And focusing in HR over Management) he is your man.

}He's one of the few teachers that actually speaks well, and his lectures are worth attending. He doesn't take attendance, but you NEED to attend because the material in the lecture IS on the test. That being said, the tests are based on lecture and reading in about equal amounts, so learn the concepts as best as possible.

}Grades are based on 2 midterms, a final, and a group project. He gives A LOT of weight to the group project, so do well on it. Most people also find the tests very hard; if you've read the material, they should not be too difficult. Grade Received: A-

Dr. Bassett's class was actually pretty cool. He tells jokes frequently during class, which helps keep you awake and interested. He doesn't pick on anyone, making class a comfortable atmosphere to ask and answer questions. There are 3 tests each worth 100 points. Also one presentation and paper due at the end of the quarter. 100 points are given for peer evaluations as well. He is very professional and excited about teaching (unlike other tenured professors), and has an enormous amount of experience in MHR, bringing real life examples to class. The tests are kind of tough, but he grades on a curve and gives extra credit to make up for it. A very fair and fun professor. Highly recommended!

Pros: He's really interested in you learning about non profits.

He's funny to listen to.

Cons: His test are based on the textbooks and you really don't have to go to class.
I absolutely loved Professor Bassett. He likes to teach this class and really enjoys himself. I thought he was funny most of the time. His class is over all fairly easy. The only sad this is that his lectures are just for fun your own willingness to expand your knowledge because his test are base on the textbooks. There would be times in class when only 10 people showed up out of 40+ which was a little sad. But I went to everyone and feel learned a lot more that I can take with me in the real non profit world.

Dr. Bassett is a great professor, one of the rare few at Cal Poly Pomona.

}MHR 319 with Dr. Bassett is not an easy class by any means, but he gives you all the opportunities to earn an A.

}Dr. Bassett gives two midterms and a final, all multiple choice.

A vast majority of your grade comes from a three group assignments, two short cases and a long case. I recommend you choose your group carefully, for this can make or break your grade.

}Dr. Bassett is very approachable, and is more than willing to help students despite his busy schedule.

}Highly recommended professor, one of the best at the College of Business, perhaps even the whole university. Grade Received: A-

this professor is probably my favorite at cal poly

if you are moderately tech savvy then this class is a breeze. the class consists of a short lecture and the rest of the class time is spent on doing little projects setting up intranets for HR and utilizing new technology or exploring new technology that can help in HR. i skipped classes and barely skimmed the book which is why i got a B, if you try its an easy B+ or A

professor is nice and innovative his lectures are interesting but he is definitely a bit eccentric ...which made it more interesting for me.

GREAT PROFESSOR I wish i could take more courses with him

Final grade : B

One of the nicest teacher... Grading is a little bit awkward.

Test can be hard, but not too hard since there is curving in the class. However, if you have a very bright student in your class... you're in a deep s**t. Better study if you want to get an A. The next important thing is that you need to be careful choosing your teammates, because if you're not you may be ending up in a team that will kill each other. The project is graded based on peer review, so if your teammates have grudges on you... expect... that you will fail the class...

So... choose your teammates carefully, you may want to take this class with your buddies...

Pros: -He is very knowledgeable

-Funny Stories

-Uses real life examples

-Curves midterms and final
Cons: -He will keep you in class the ENTIRE time

-The workload is too much
You only use the $150+ book to study for the exams. It will help but I suggest just renting it or splitting the cost with a classmate. His lectures are straight from the book, not class. He doesn't take roll. I got a B and a C going into the final. With extra credit (easy 10 pts) and studying hard for final and doing well on the group project (which is alot if you have less than 4 people), I ended up with an A. Don't know how, but I got it =]

Very interesting class and the professor was very knowledgeable on the subject. The exams are not easy but he seems to be rather generous on the presentations - there are three group presentations -- two short case evaluations and one long case. All are interesting. Try to get into a good group because the amount of work you have to do will depend on them - I was lucky to have a great group. I feel like I learned enough without being overwhelmed with busy work - He also gave an extra credit assignment due on the night of the final exam. I would take this professor again. This teachers is really good in teaching. you have two midterms, Final, and Group Presentation, the three exams are based on the text book, read the book and you will do alright. He has a curve for the tests. One Extra Credit assignment. group project is a little tough but not too bad. You dont have to attend the classes as long as you read the book carefully before the tests. tests are not cumulative. he's a nice persona and willing to help though i dont think you need any help just read the book if you wanna pass Grade Received: A-

This class was fun. No lectures so read the book for test. Class consist of group work on designing HR websites. All class period is spent actually doing little projects. So you can leave when you want. There are a few homework assignments most reviewing HR sites and reporting findings. Easy class. Bassett is a great professor, he is willing to help, very knowledgable, friendly, and really funny. He curves the test and the final grade. I have taken 2 classes with him now and will take him again if I can. Grade Received: B+

Professor Bassett is hands down my favorite MHR professor. His class was such a treat to be in. His lectures about Non-profits are so interesting that you'd always want to learn more. He is a great professor who cares about his students success in his class. If you have the option of taking him for any class definitely take him and if you need an easy but fun filled class definitely take MHR 319 with him.
