AWESOME TEACHER! I LOVED THIS CLASS!

Davis is an awesome, energetic, and loving teacher!

She listens and cares about her students!

Very good at lecturing!

}Just make your speech's make sence and follow the guidelines and you will get a good grade on each one.

}There are 4 speeches although my class only did the first 3 out of 4 due to time restraints. 1)Personal Artifact Speech 2) Informative Speech 3) Persuasive Speech 4) Special Occasion Speech.

}TAKE GOOD NOTES! The study guides she gives are good but not very detailed so just read the chapters when they are assigned! They are not long and have some interesting facts about communication.

}Speeches were easy to write and deliver to the class.

No one really pays attention, unless you give a good speech.

}There is one midterm and the one final.

Both have about 50 questions: you are given your class period to conplete the midterm which is about one hour and you are given two hours to complete the final. (Both tests take about an hour, so if you are a slow (multiple choice) test taker don't worry you will have plenty of time.

}TAKE THIS CLASS FOR A GOOD TIME AND A GOOD GRADE!

}AIM: ENGINEERGRL5 (for questions you have) Grade Received: B+

The quarter seemed to go by fast in her class. She was always happy and wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page. The criteria of the class gradually opens you up to speaking in front of an audience (The class was so comfortable with each other that no one was criticized or made fun of). Project your voice, manage eye contact, use supporting material, etc. If you choose a topic you enjoy, then you will have no problem speaking about it. There is a midterm and a final, but if you read the book and outline her study guide, you will pass. Some COM100 classes do not require you to dress up during your speech day, but Professor Davis does. Some dislike it, some like it. I prefer dressing up because it is more professional and really gives credibility to your persona. It is valuable for the future so you may as well start now. If you are thinking about taking this class, do so as soon as possible. What you learn in this class helps you in other classes that require speaking. No one in the class complained about anything and she understands that we are still learning. Grade Received: A

Mrs. Davis' class consists of two midterms; each worth 50 points. There are four speeches: talk about a treasured artifact (25 pts.), group presentation on a book topic (50 pts.), informative (75 pts.) and persuasive (100 pts.). She encouraged us to choose topics we enjoy to make our speeches run smoothly. She calls attendance and grades you upon that. Which is great because her notes also reflect her mid-terms. Personality-wise, Mrs. Davis is a hilarious and sarcastic person. By this, she actually got many students involved in her class! Even though she sometimes used us as examples for some "not to do in your speeches", we didn't care because she was so chill. She's awesome! Take her! And please don't write 54% on the board when you mean $54. And don't bring 25 note cards on your speech. You can use note cards, but only a couple. Lastly, even if you stutter during your speech, need a breather, or any of the such, don't worry! She's a fair grader. She knows we are novices/amateurs on speeches and will not penalize you for that. So relax. Grade Received: B

I was really nervous entering this class because I HATE speaking in front of people but Prof. Davis truly does have the gift of making you feel comfortable and at ease. Even if you don't give that good of a speech she is always able to find and say something positive to you. I was HELLA nervous for my first speech and she could tell. She tells you what it is you need to correct and by the second speech i was fine! If you take this class I just highly reccomend running through your speech and KNOW what you are going to say. Also, make sure you don't go over your time!

DEFINITELY TAKE HER!

You won't regret it! Grade Received: A-

This class is easy. 4 speeches, 1 midterm, and a final. She is picky on the details...so you must do what the textbook says. You must go to class but you can miss a little without your grade suffering. Very friendly but did have her days that she was not so happy. The midterm and final is just about the textbook and some in class notes. Midterm was chapter 1-6 and final 10-16.Some homework but easy! She does mark off points though if you read from your notes (highest grade you can get on the speech C+), and if you choose a topic for your speech and then change it.

Take this professor! Easy class! Grade Received: B

I actually learned stuff in this class and I'm a better public speaker now because of it. Her technique of teaching is good, she tries to relate to the students and she usually succeeds since she seems to have a good grasp of how younger people think, maybe because she doesn't look very old herself and she has two teenagers. She almost always has a smile on her face which made going to class a lot more enjoyable. It's hard to fall asleep in her class because she's always talking to us about something in a loud and clear voice so its definitely not boring. Grade Received: B

Dr. Davis is a great proffessor. I was AFRAID of taking COM 100 but her class was the complete opposite of what I had imagined. Everyone is respectful and we were all cool with each other. There are four speeches. The first two are very easy and short. The last two are long (an informative and a persuasive essay). Dr. Davis grades very fairly and encourages every one to do their best. You will learn a lot and the class is entertaining. I highly recommedn Dr. Davis. Take her if you have the opportunity, won't regreat it. Grade Received: A-

I took her for COM314 (grade cal poly wouldn't give me the option) and it was one of the most interesting general ed's I've taken. She is SUPER friendly; and explains everything very clearly. Class participation and attendance is basically mandatory, but it's not a class that you would want to skip anyway. Her tests are kind of tricky because their based around her lecture and the book, so you have to read and absorb the chapters before the exams. Overall a challenging, but interesting course. Highly RECOMMEND! Grade Received: A-

Melanie Davis is a great instructor to have. She is very friendly and this makes for a very comfortable speech giving class.

}The class is based on 2 exams and 4 speeches. Both the midterm and the final are 50 questions each, done on scantrons. It took me about 30 minutes to complete each exam. The exams are of average difficulty.

}The 4 speeches aren't too difficult to write. The hard part was finding enough sources for the final 2 speeches...

}Overall, a great instructor. I would take her again. Grade Received: B

Professor Davis is unique. Very entertaining and enthusiastic, she makes public speaking interesting. She is a harsh grader on the speeches(only one A overall in my class despite several incredible speakers). Her class is 4 speeches and 2 tests. The tests are fairly easy. The speeches are not really that bad even if you do not like speaking in front of a crowd. She prepares you well for them in the little time she has. I recommend her for any COM class. The class is overall simple... go to class take notes and listen. She is very friendly, very assesible, and easy to talk to. There are about 4 speeches each worth more and more points the more you learn. Other than the speeches there are 2 tests, very simple if you have read the book. Overall a great teacher and i would advise you to take her. Grade Received: B+

There are a total of 4 speeches, midterm, and final. The tests aren't too bad if you read the book and study the stuff on the study guide. I got A- on the midterm. Speak extemperaneously and have lots of eye contact and speak within the time limit and you'll probably do fine. Grade Received: B+

Pros: seems nice
Cons: isn't really nice.
Skip to the last few sentences for the overall review.

basically outlines the information you need to know in lectures. assigns reading but no one really does it.

the only work for the class is 3 speeches throughout the quarter.

the class generally stays silent and if you participate and try to get everyone to talk, you won't be rewarded at all. she'll ask questions and most people don't respond so i did it to try to earn brownie points. speeches require sources and ect. make sure you do it early... don't procrastinate. for all my speeches i did them in an hour at 5 or 6 in the morning, had the class at 8. lol researching is the hardest part. last speech, had the best one out of my group, everyone liked it. got a C on it. WTF? make sure you put sources.

EXAMS: these fucked me over. make sure you study! midterm, i decided it'd be easy enough. nope. final, i tried to study but thought i had everything but got a D everyone else said it was pretty easy

if you participate you will not be rewarded in any way. i tried to be friendly throughout the whole class and she still gave me a shit grade. GRADES HARSHLY ON SPEECHES. seriously what the fuck? why would you need sources on a speech saying how nicki manaj had the worst track in the past five years? bullshit reasoning. gave out homework assignments and was not clear about it. MAKE SURE YOU STUDY FOR EXAMS they're the most important part of the grade.

Pros: - Very welcoming environment

- Prof. Davis is able to convey material very well

- Positive feedback is always given after each speech

- Assignments are straightforward and easy to understand
Cons: N/A
Public speaking can be very intimidating for many - this was definitely the case for me. I took it during my first quarter at Cal Poly, and it turned out to be my favorite class. Professor Davis is a very kind, respectful woman. She grades fairly, gives great feedback, makes herself easily available to get ahold of, and creates an overall positive and welcoming environment. If you can, definitely enroll in her class. Regardless of how nervous you are when it comes to speaking in front of a classroom, I strongly suggest enrolling in her course. It's one of the few classes you will actually benefit from, and it is nowhere near as bad as I imagined it would've been.

Davis is a very kind women, her class required a good amount of prep because she assigned 4 speeches, (or less), but the speeches were graded on delivery and preparation, so making outlines and knowing what to say before hand was extremely important, just a heads up if you dont like speaking in front of people i wouldn't recommend this class especially if you want a high grade out of it. grade received = B+
