Pros: Very organized
Cons: Assigns a lot of reading for homework sometimes.
I took this class to fulfill my C4 for general education. This class isn't that hard but there is A LOT of reading. Every homework assignment you will have is to read either a book or an article, sometimes it's just 10 pages, other times it's a 20+ page pdf, at first it's not that bad until late in the quarter when you stop caring. You have to purchase 4 books for this class, but you will only be reading 2 of them all the way through so that you can write a paper on each of them that is 500-600 words long. The other 2 books will be used for class discussions. There is one midterm, a final paper and a final exam. The midterm is taken online and draws from readings and class discussions, it is in short answer form. The final exam is the same format as the midterm, they are both taken online. The final paper is an autobiography that is 1800-2000 words long. Overall, this isn't the easiest of classes, nor is it the hardest, but if you're looking to learn a lot about California history, this is a cool class to take. If you just want to fulfill a GE, this class isn't that bad, but the constant readings can get annoying.

Pros: There are only 3 assignments due the entire quarter, you have 2 exams- midterm and final, and for those exams you have full access to all of your notes. Also, there are practice quizzes uploaded on Blackboard that allow you to test your understanding at the end of each week, and he also uploads the next classes powerpoint the night before so you may take pre-class notes and use it to study for the exams.
Cons: The only con is that there is assigned reading for every night, however the reading is interesting.

If you do happen to skip out on the reading, the notes in class go over what was in the reading but you won't be able to participate in class or fully understand what is being said in lecture. If you have the time, you can look at the powerpoints for the next lecture to also prepare you.
Professor Labau (pronounced Labow) is a very nice guy always asking the class how their week has been and if anything exciting is happening in the future. He's not afraid to joke around in class and makes the material easy to understand.

I would definitely recommend this class to anyone that wants (or has to) take history and wants a class that they will truly learn and enjoy being in.

Pros: Funny, interesting teacher

Nice guy

Curves tests

Cons: A lot of reading
He is a really good teacher! Lectures are interesting, you only have 2 assignments and he curved our first final by 10 points which was surprising, and really generous! The homework is only reading, so you can get behind if you get lazy.

Professor Labau is one of the few professors that actually care about what the students are doing during their leisure time. He actually spends around 5 minutes every class period asking if there are any "fun or exciting" adventurous things that are happening with the students. During the beginning there is a lot of group work and participation needed. He grades according to how much you participate everyday(out of 100 points possible) and whether you are present on the days you work in groups. Now there are 3 document essays on the book: voices of freedom. You are assigned by name which documents you have to analyze and turn it in on the due date. Usually its every 2 weeks you do so. Also you can have your lowest essay grade dropped ONLY if you go to his office hours and talk to him. The midterms are basically the powerpoint slides, but you have to go more in detailed. He explains a lot in class and if you miss a day and just look at the powerpoint, you'd probably miss an important thing that may be on the test! Also his exams are not cumulative. BLESS THIS HAHA. Since I had no interest in history and only took this as a G.E I somehow barely passed with a C-. Whoops. You have to work hard in his class otherwise you won't get a good grade. Also the seating chart is basically on the 2nd week of the class you pick a seat and it's the seat you will sit for the remainder of the quarter.

Pros: Passionate, interesting, adorable, friendly professor; teaches well and knows his stuff

Connects with students, starts asking about everyone before each class

Doesn't rely too much on PowerPoint, he adds little anecdotes in his lectures that helps you remember stuff on tests, so it’s worth going to class

Gives you helpful study guides for exams, work on and review them before the tests and you’ll most likely get an A, working with a good study buddy is best.

Exams are multiple choice on scantrons and short essays

Curves 2 midterms and final
Cons: Uses a seating chart

Not too interactive, so it’s easy to fall asleep if you take it in the morning. Participating is the best way to stay awake

Get the books, bring them to class for group work

Reading every night that you go over in class. If you can buy the books, it’s best so you can highlight stuff when you do study guides

Assigns 2 documents due online
TAKE HIM!!! It's an easy A if you're not too lazy

Pros: -He is a very friendly and kind professor

-He likes to start off class by asking how everybody is, and he gives you the chance to share anything exciting that happened to you during the week

-He is very knowledgeable about California history

-He gives you a reading guide for each document and memoir you read

-He grades very fair on the midterm, final and papers

Cons: -There is A LOT of reading. If you don't do the reading before class, it's not that big of a deal, you just won't be able to participate that much. However, for the midterm and final, you need to give specific examples from the readings, and if you haven't read them thoroughly, then it can be tough.

-Holy Land by D.J. Waldie is a tough book to get thorough. You have to write a book review on that one, and it's a strange read.
Overall, I really enjoyed Dr. LaBau's class. His personality and teaching style were very upbeat and positive, which was very nice.

Pros: -Very funny

- Enthusiastic

Let me first say that I usually do not like history courses, but after taking labau I have a

better perspective on history. He is such a nice guy and opens every class with how everyone

is doing and what they are gonna do for the weekend. He makes the class interesting and always engages the class.

Warning; there is a lot of reading, like every night. Stay on top of it.

There are these document analysis papers that you write like every two weeks.

Also there are two exams and a final, not too bad as long as you read.

Overall, Labau is awesome and if you stay on task you get an A

He is a very nice guy, really cares if you go to office hours. Gives you three short essays to write, which he teaches you how to do. His tests ate 45 problems open notes. Take good notes in class!! and do the readings like he tells you!! there are lot of reading to do and notes taking as well. I had 20 pages of notes for my midterm, but i still bombed it. His tests are hard! the average was 56% so he curved it. he also drops the lowest essay if you go and talk to him. Attendance is a must! Other professors are a little easier i believe, avoid him i would say. Grade received: C

Pros: always cheerful in class, sometimes he cracks jokes, great help during office hours, super nice and organized
Cons: reading every night
I personally don't like history, but Labau made it so interesting. The books that he assigns are great resources because one of the books gave different perspectives so I was getting really into the readings. The exams were hard but they weren't brutal. All the exams are curved which is fantastic. Take him if you want to learn about history and explore different outlooks, but if you want an easy A take a different professor

Pros: Great Teacher!
Cons: None.
Do the daily assigned reading, go to class ready to participate. His teaching style is great! He gets you excited to learn the material.

There are:

3 document analysis

3 midterms (includes the final) and they're non cumulative!

I have never liked history, but after this class my mindset changed. He has a passion for what he does. Just do the reading and study for each midterm you'll get a good grade. He also curves the midterms. TYBG

Pros: Enthusiastic professor who "gets" most students views of the class. Always came prepared to class and was always in a good mood. Always starts the class by talking about non-history related things and kept lectures interactive.
Cons: Daily reading can be a con if you don't read often. Got by without doing the daily reading after the first few weeks but could have done better.
Overall an amazing history professor who cares about the big picture and not the small details.

Just read the sections he assigns, and review the study guides before the tests and you should be fine. Gotta have the book. Bring them with you to class because he makes you do group work. The seating chart thing is sort of weird, too.
