Pros: *Cancels class for more project preparation time!

*Freaken Hilarious!

*Changes assignments to fit our schedule

*Straight up with everybody

*SHE ACTUALLY RESPONDS TO EMAILS IN A TIMELY MANNER!
Cons: *Extremely politically bias, as a political science major I have rights to decree that! She will ruin your day if you make a mistake or assert something incorrect even by a little (do not even think about telling her about your views on gay rights, racism, she'll correct you and you have to deal with it) This never happened to me but I saw others fall in this trap.

*Can get moody if you ask the wrong question

*Always makes fun of God conservatives, even if some liberal politician is saying something even more stupid

*Always brags about being a professional American historian however she is good at that topic so good for her

She's lovely however, so take her it's Peg, no other like her!

Prepare yourself: this is going to be a rant. First off, I read these other reviews and this teacher sounded fun and interesting, so I waitlisted the class instead of risking it with a "Staff". While I admit that the class was pretty interesting, it was one of the most politically slanted history classes I've ever taken. She calls high school "Republican history" (which is more or less true) and feels it's her job to correct your views of the world to match her own radically liberal viewpoint. I'd say I'm pretty liberal, but she brings it to a whole new level by framing every historical topic through her anti-capitalism, proletariat, anti-anything conservative views and stating it as historical fact. Her political slant is on par with Fox News (though obviously the inverse) and I'm sure she's a huge fan of Karl Marx. I'm fine with communists and socialists (not exactly my cup of tea), but cannot advocate the blatant brainwashing and radically liberal re-education that took place in that classroom. The bias seemed so obvious to me, yet looking at the people around me it seemed as if they were just eating it up. One topic she loved to bring up was the capitalism's economic enslavement of the working man such as big business taking advantage of day laborers. It was an interesting point, but I'd really like to see how replacing a top company executive with a janitor or grape-picker would work. I'll give you a hint: it probably wouldn't. What I thought was interesting is that one of her mini-lectures was about how objectivity is impossible, so you shouldn't even try, which is a great summation of her teaching style. If all you care about is grades (and you really shouldn't) then just be sure to regurgitate her opinion from your notes onto the open-notes final because that's all she wants. She doesn't want critical thinking, she wants lots and lots of rewriting of mundane historical details from her notes. Don't believe her when she says that the class will be based on concepts and not merely on dates and names. I did, and she gave me a 70 on the final which dropped my grade by a full letter. Oh, and she says she'll accept opposition to her opinions and won't grade based on it, but I wouldn't believe it. THE BOTTOM LINE: If you learn anything from this class, it should be how to take everything with a grain of salt and recognize bias. If you want a good grade, DON'T oppose her and DO copy her biased notes onto the final exam, which she is guaranteed to love. Grade Received: B

She is prob the BEST teacher at Cal Poly Pomona!!!! I loved her class.. she was funny.. she got us thinking in a different way.. and she was very helpful. I'm sure much more helpful than any other IGE professor. She was clear to say what she wanted and how she wanted it and it was not bad at all. I wish I could be in all her classes, but unfortunately she only teachers the first quarter and the last ones of the sequence. Take her! You will not regret it. WE did funny skits and laughed every single day to the point where we were afraid to pee...haha... She's amazing. Grade Received: A-

She is very talkative and very different from other professors - you will see what I mean when you take her class. She is flexible. There is one huge paper, lots of mini-responses and one group project. If you take the MWF sequence, so gives a couple of days to watch movies, so you really go to class about twice a week. I would recommend taking her, she is a fun teacher. Grade Received: A

Really funny and cool teacher. This class is really easy, which means you could get bored sometimes but Peg makes it fun and entertaining. We are suppose to do two essays for this course but she usually makes you do only one. You just have to make sure to put the work into the essay, she's picky when it comes to the essays. You have a class schedule with all the work on it but it most likely will change from some reason. The best part about this class is that there is no final only a group presentation. It can be either really easy or a pain. It all depends on how much work you put into it. As for Peg, she comes off as a huge feminist, but its what makes her fun to take. She easy to approach before, during, and after class. If you are going to take this class I highly suggest taking this teacher.

She feels very at ease with her students, and although I am normally pretty shy, I felt at ease talking in front of the class and such. You learn more and get a higher grade when you enjoy the class, and Lamphier's personality, explanations, and commentary help achieve this. She is an amazing historian as well, and does what other IGE professors shy away from... shares knowledge. I wanted to take her this quarter, but there was a schedule conflict and I'm surprised to see spots open for her class. Just take her and see what I mean.

Pros: Amazing professor that is full of knowledge. One of the smartest people you'll ever meet. She also understands students and works in a way that most students like.
Cons: You have to make sure you have citations on your essay and make sure it's the right length. You also have to do most of the homework if you want an A.
Just do the homework... It takes half an hour most of the time and it's easy. And don't half-ass the essay. Put some time and effort into it and you'll get a good grade. This is really a class that you should get an A in.

Pros: She is so incredibly funny and absolutely energetic.

Very active in critical thinking, and making the students answer questions themselves. (Which is what IGE is all about.)

Has a lovely sense of humor.

May or may not only have you do only 1 paper instead of 2.
Cons: Reading and Reading Responsive may become tedious after awhile, but become routine.
You can learn so much from her. Not just the curriculum of IGE, but learn from her experiences from her life, which she shares often. Definitley recommend her for any IGE class.

EVERYONE IN THE IGE PROGRAM, PLEASE TAKE HER. Out of all the teachers that I have had, I learned the most from Peg. She is funny, really knows her stuff, challenges your views. She a strong alpha dog feminist who likes purple pens (so that when she writes mean comments it seems kinder) haha. Don't be afraid to speak up in class if you have something smart to say, she likes that. I do have to warn you though, she is a very hard grader on your final papers. The things that get points marked off most is citation!

I took this class last summer and I decided to do this review now because I got nothing else to do. She is one of the best teachers I've had at THE CPP so far. She teaches you history from a totally different perspective. She was actually fun to listen to. This is one of the best classes to have in the morning because she will not make you fall asleep. For homework, she has about 13 or 14 2 pg summary assignments throughout the whole quarter and you have to do around 7 of them. These were easy to get full credit on because she grades mainly completeness and following directions not quality. She also gives a couple of extra assignments that are worth about 2 regular assignments. Homework is worth a lot in this class and I suggest you do them all and get them in on time especially if you choke on the midterm or final. For the midterm, they were 50 MC questions that are based on her lecture notes, and it was pretty easy, just read over her notes a couple of times. The final is a set of essay questions and like everyone else has mentioned you can use your notes. She grades the final not on structure or organization of your responses just on how informative your responses are, how much relevant content does it have based on the question. Overall an avoid at all costs professor if this was in some parallel universe, but really take her. Someone mentioned how liberal she is, yes she is very liberal but she did not try to impose her views on people. If you're a politically active conservative republican you may not like her because she does bash the republican party. She knows that some of her republican students did not like her. I did not mind , I have moderate political views. Grade Received: A-

The best class/professor I took this quarter. To do well in her class, simply go to class everyday on time with your notebook (or better yet a laptop), and take notes of her lectures. It might sound boring, but the way she lectures makes history very interesting! You always learn the "dark side" of history that is less expected, so it's not like a review U.S. history from your high school. The key is to have good notes, the better notes you have, they more helpful they will become during your final. The class consists of 10 homework assignments, which is basically summaries from each week's reading. Although you only need to do 7 out of the 10. So the rest 3 can be seen as "back-up's in case you chose not to do them that week". The midterm is multiple choice on the scantron, based on all the in-class lectures she covered in class (so studying your notes will help a bunch). The final is a set of essay questions that you must complete within time, so it's a good idea to know your timing while you're writing the essay. Dr. Lamphier as a person is great. She really tries to get the students to like history by her methods of teaching. I know, a lot of people say she is too liberal, and she is, but that doesn't really matter. She's just opening to her opinions, and you're here to learn. So who gives a fuck. Grade Received: A-

Ok here's the deal with Lamphier. SHe is probably the most funniest, amazing, approachable professor u will ever have. I had her for WInter '10 & if you want to have the best history class experience, look no further. it would be a privledge to have her as a professor! There are 1 page chapter summaries due each week (you pick 7 weeks out of 10 to turn them in). THe midterm is easy if you take very good notes. she practically tells you everything whats going to be on the midterm IF YOU COPY EVERYTHING ON THE BOARD. If you miss class, get the notes from someone else. so befriend someone. also, her lectures are very interesting. you will LEARN A LOT. i learned SHIT in my AP U.S.Historyclass in high school (2 on the AP) & got nothing out of that dumbass class that some 60-some year old woman taught!!! Lamphier teaches you about the TRUE history of america. b/c when you love something, you must love the GOOD & the BAD. come to class everyday b/c you will enjoy it!! seriously, this class was the BEST. lamphier if ur reading this, know that students like ME truly appreciate having a professor like YOU at our university. Keep teaching b/c you have a natural talent. you're hilarious & i hope you continue to be here with us at cal poly! :) Grade Received: A

This class is very easy because you do seven 2 page papers which are easy points and you have an opportunity to do 1 extra paper for 20 points extra credit. This midterm was fair to get an easy B and the final was an essay that you had to use 4 examples from American History to prove or disprove a quote on the board. The final was open notes, so you just had to make it into an essay. You choose what to write about. The lectures are most vital to this class. Your notes are what the midterm and final are on, not your readings, so you must attend everyday or make sure you have a friend that you can get the notes off of. BUT, there is one thing that I wish I would have known before going into this class that no one else has mentioned. This professor is extremely liberal/democrat/feminist and tries to push her views on you, which is something many people did not like. She also tends to insult Christians/Catholics. One day she said that if you do not believe in Evolution you are stupid. Excuse me, but that is something you do not say to anyone. It's fine she has her own opinions, but if you have ones different than hers, you may not want to take this class because you will be ANNOYED! Grade Received: A

Pros: - The funniest professor in the entire University

-Her class activity is incomparable to other IGE classes
Cons: -Probably none, but if you don't like to work during the class or dislike to speak up in the class, she is not the one to take
MoWeFr classes sometimes require Reading Response to be turned in sometimes, but it is usually two days out of the three. There is only one essay and one project to do during the class, which is manageable compared to two essays and one project like other classes. Her class style is true engagement, which is suppose to be the main theme for IGE, but she does this because she is the BEST. Her class is always talkative, but when we do need to discuss the material you read for the reading response, she will do a mini lecture about it. She will let you out early when the class finishes the class activity, which is usually fun when you have small group to work with. Overall, she is the best compared to other professors in the IGE department.

Pros: You win if you take this professor!
Cons: You lose if you don't take her!
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! I am graduating in one year (class of 2012), and history is a very boring and controversial subject....but Dr. Lamphier is the one professor to take. She is easy, fair, fun, and loving as well. She has the heart of an angel because she cares about her profession and her students. Go to her if you need help! She will put not 100%, but 1,000% to you! you will do 7 out of 10 homeowork assignments (so you guys can slack 3wks off w/out doing homework), 50 question essay that is EXACTLY FROM HER LECTURES!!!, and one final w/50 questions and an essay. Go to class, she doesn't take role but you will miss you if you don't go to class. Everything discussed in class is on the lecture. I would recommend and beg you to take her.....I had her for an 8am class, no one.....ever missed the class because she's that good. Have fun and Enjoy....if this is you reading....HI DR. L!!!!!!!!!!

Pros: Homework requires some reading but is reasonable for a history class. Teacher is VERY funny! She makes it easy to understand the concepts and to learn the material.
I have never enjoyed a history class as much as this class taught by Professor Lamphier. Dr. Lamphier makes use of her family history to illuminate concepts in American History, and by putting a face on the lessons, makes them easier to understand. She requires one paper each week, seven total for the quarter (you pick which weeks to do the papers); one-sided, single spaced. There are two readings each week from which to choose, which allows the student to study what is most interesting to the student. There are two projects which need to be written up, and the student can choose from an extensive list. I would highly recommend Dr. Lamphier to anyone needing to take History 201.

I absolutely loved her!! One of the best history professors I've had in all my years of going to school. She doesn't spend much time on the dates and boring aspects of history, but informs you about things that have always been overlooked in the curriculum. Her midterm and final were very basic; no dates to memorize only events. You watch some interesting movies too. She always had my attention, even with the class being at 8 in the morning. I definately recommend her. The only book you had to buy was a cheap $30 one. You have weekly one page write up, but the great thing is, you can get ahead and it's all opinion. Just show that you understood what the essay was about, take a stance, and defend it and you will do fine. She also allows you to rewrite some if you didn't do too hot. She is a great professor!

Pros: Fun

Not too difficult

Very smart
Cons: Very liberal (I think that's a good thing, but I can see how you might be annoyed if you were very conservative about particular issues)

Medium/Tough grader for essays
Peg is one of my favorite teachers. I've had her for a few IGE classes. She isn't too difficult, but maybe slightly more difficult than the average IGE prof. Her politics does inform her teaching style and curriculum, so if you are offended by feminism then you will be offended by this class. Peg is a fantastic intersectional feminist. If you know what that word means then you are probably the type of person who will love her class.

Peg is super easy to talk to also. Since IGE is largely based on participation, going to her office hours and getting to know her will help you out and is a nice experience.
