This class requires A LOT of work. Be prepared to be either studying for a quiz, studying for an exam, or getting a section of your project done! There is a project that is 5 sections that you turn in throughout the quarter. You have a team of 5-6 people and you take an individual quiz almost every class session and then you take the same quiz but with your team. The project consists of creating an appetizer, soup/salad, entree & dessert and finding the costs for each item and ingredient. very tedious and a lot of work and also time consuming. She grades very hard so be careful with details will mark you off. Shes a very cool teacher though and she gives hints through blackboard/email couple days before the quiz so if you study those "hints" you'll do find on the quiz. You need both books so buy it! Also, she gives you example problems that are similar to the ones on the test, just different numbers. Although she does that, it test is always still harder than example problems. The test is hard because if you get part a wrong then part b, c, d, e, etc. is wrong also. Be careful! Once you get the first part wrong, the rest is also wrong.

Breakdown:

classroom & team participation 40 pts

team member & self evaluation score 100 pts

individual quizzes 150 pts

team quizzes 150 pts

food production & menu project 200 pts

exam #1 120 pts

exam #2 120 pts

exam #3 120 pts

Total: 1000 pts

note: our class average for exam #1 was 63% and exam #2 was about 75%

Pros: Very knowledgeable in subject and field area

Ridiculously organized -> the way she does things, even her thought process and the way she speaks is organized... o.O
Cons: A lot of stuff to do..
Can't miss any of her classes.. the chapter quizzes start in the beginning of class.. so you must always be present-- you get points too! You will be working with a group most of the time.. Her exams are pretty hard I guess.. I didn't do too well on the first exam.. but then again, I didn't put in too much effort to study so I got what I deserved.. I got a B+ or something overall..

There's too much stuff to do in so little time especially with a lot of other classes or maybe even work.. but she is great at what she does, is challenging, and expects a lot from us.. and I say that in a good way LOL

Cons: Quizes every week

Mama Belle is an AMAZING teacher but boy was this class challenging. My best advice: pick a GOOD group, stay up to speed with all your reading and work, and practice practice PRACTICE the test Q's.

She is the ONLY one who really teaches 276, my suggestion, take it at a JC. This class was hard for no reason. I came to her for help and she was like its there in my examples. Tried to come to her in her office hours and she wasn't there. I truly had a hard/challenging time in this class and so did a lot of others. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS (if you can) TAKE SOMEWHERE LIKE @ a JC. Class is out of 1,000 and 3 exams worth 120 each. The majority of your grade is the group project. Thought I'd throw some helpful tips in there for the people who actually take this class, but my advice and feelinGs do stay the same. TAKE SOMEWHERE ELSE IF YOU CAN!!!!

Cons: Sometimes you will ask her questions and she teaches basically just verbally so if you are a visual learner then it is just easier to ask a friend instead.

Pros: Very structured class

Very clear and grading and expectations

Group work
Cons: Pretty much taught myself
I very much enjoyed this class because the majority of your work is group work and I loved my group. A big portion of your grade is a group project so choose your group wisely :) I found her style of teaching a little confusing and unclear so I ended up teaching myself most of the time. But she is always there to help you and truly wants to see you succeed!

Pros: I love her personality and she knows how to teach! Be prepared to work hard guys!
Cons: Quizzes every class, must read the textbook to get good grades. Exam 1 is difficult, but easier for exam 2 & 3. Group project is not due at the end of the quarter, separate into five parts and due throughout the quarter.

Pros: -Mama Belle is hilarious

-Course work is manageable if you keep up on it

-She gives hints for every in-class quiz on blackboard

-Midterms/Final do not make or break your grade

-She loves the subject, is so knowledgeable, and is pationate
Cons: -Quizzes every class period

-2 Midterms/1 Final very hard

-Textbook reading is mandatory

-Section 2 of the group project is a killer
Mama Belle's class is honestly one of the best classes for HRT students. If you pay attention in class, check blackboard regularly, and read the textbook...this class is manageable. This is definitely not a class that you can sit back and relax in. Participation counts and is worth a good chunk of your grade and she pays attention to who is actively listening in class. There is a group project with 5 sections that gets divided among your team members. PICK GOOD PEOPLE TO BE ON YOUR TEAM!! this project is 200 points and if done right, will save your grade in the class! I cannot stress this enough but if you do not work together with your team this will be the hardest class of your life.....there are quizzes at the start of every class period, one individual, one team (same questions)....usually 10-30 points each quiz on readings from the textbook! READ THE TEXTBOOK!!! She gives hints for the quizzes but the questions are very specific and tricky. During class Mama Belle goes over documents that will be on her blackboard since day 1. She expects you to have gone through blackboard and looked at these documents prior to class. If this is not done, you probably will fall behind and be incredibly confused.Tests are hard. You are allowed to have a 8 1/2 x 11 cheat sheet to help you, but format will be different from what you studied/questions will be worded different/more complex. Overall the class if worth 1000 points....grading is very straightforward -100 points, you'll get a B, -200 points, you'll get a C, no rounding, no wiggle room. One of the best things is at the end you do team evaluations worth 100 points. If you contribute greatly to your team, your team members can rate you 10+ and you will receive extra points. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME EXTRA POINTS ARE EVEN A THING. Good luck!! Grade received: B+

Pros: -very nice and very understanding

-will sitdown with you and explain what she wants

-always there during her office hours
Cons: -a lot of work

-quiz every week

-must read every detail of every chapter

-if you dont like your group members you better kick them out of your group early!
shes an AMAZING prof. and is very nice. the class is difficult because there is a quiz every week which includes a quiz taken by yourself then you will retake the same quiz again with your group members and there is a lot of in class assignments which may force you to finish outside of class. every assignment is done in a group. make sure you like your group members and meet with her during her office hours if you can! take a shot at her class if you feel like you can handle the work load! (you must also present every in class assignment done with your group).

Pros: She's willing to meet at office hours if you have questions on your project. She's decent as a person but definitely not as a teacher.
Cons: She gives a lot of work and a lot of information. Her powerpoints are way too fast and difficult to understand. She expects you to find and read everything on Blackboard without explaining a lot. She's not effective as a teacher and four of my students received below 20% on their first exams, 80% being the highest score.
She's a nice person and friendly, but she will not help you or curve your grades. She's also the only teacher for this section and she will make you work very hard so expect no mercy. You're basically expected to learn everything on your own. To be honest I wish we had more teachers because her teaching style has no impact and I have not learned anything from this class.

Cons: - Quick to scrutinize

- Details over concepts

- Does not teach thoroughly

- Perfection or nothing
Bell is devoted to technicalities of course material, not concepts as a whole. Perfection is the only measure of good in her eyes. She does not care to help students work through their problems and is always quick to scrutinize and ridicule if a student is struggling with a concept. Did not strive to better her students or benefit them in anyway.
