i liked this class even though she took attendance and counted participation. this history class made me think! and that's a good thing 'cause it helps you to be a better thinker. lectures on power point, were super boring, though! Grade Received: B+

She said she've never taught this class before, and she came up w/ tons of work. she expects daily readings from 2 textbooks. 1 paragraph about a reading like every 3 or 4 weeks. 2 papers. 1 group project, that she changed it to individual project at the very end. 1 midterm and 1 final. midterm is almost the same as final. for midterm, need to identify 10 terms (when, what, why). 1 pt each. quiz on countries locations. dont worth much. explain a paragraph that she chose from the Keilly book. choose one essay from the 2 choices she gave. all of the above have choices for u to choose, other than the map quiz part. and the final is pretty much the same, its just that it's longer. The study guide has 3 pages. very long! for the final's essay on the study guide, she gave out 14 essay questions and said that she'll put two of them in the final for us to write one.

She expect class participation, it worth 10% in class. 10% attendence, 10 % assignments and quizzes.....

she often changes the syllabus, so that u've to almost check the blackboard everyday. btw, there's quiz on reading every week.

Don't take her for this class. She has too much to do. She gave out a lot of work, not only troubles us, but also make her sick, and she took a day off for that.

Pros: -Extremely Organized (her Blackboard was perfect)

-Helpful when questions were asked

-Not a lot of homework was required
Cons: -Can seem intimidating at first

-Expects class participation, but can be harsh when answers are incorrect or not what she had in mind

-Moody (at times)
Professor Mickey was an amazing History Professor! I am not much of a History person and could honestly care less about our past histories, but her class engaged me and kept me super interested. Her midterm/exam are a little bit hard, even with the study guide, she really makes you THINK (critically) and put things into your own words. She just doesn't give you the answer. There was 1 paper and 1 group project. Her class was overall great and I enjoyed it. Like any class there is homework prior to each class meeting (mostly reading) and you must make sure to keep up with the online quizzes required before each class meeting. She likes when the class participates and will voice her irritation for coming unprepared for class. If you regularly and keep up with the assignments/readings, you will do fine. Grade received: A-

Early and Medieval China
4****
Pros: >Funny

>Knows a lot of material in regards to modern China

>Can speak some Chinese Mandarin

>Good sense of humor

>Has a cute cat

Cons: >Doesn't know enough about some of the material covered in her Japanese and Pre-Modern China classes. She will say occasionally, "I have no idea, but that would be an interesting thing to look up." Which is kind of ridiculous to say in a class where the question(s) being asked are related to the material she should be covering.

>Gives out homework almost every class

>Will embarrass you, but all in good humor. Just don't be a cry baby and you'll be fine.
>Book is not *really* required for her classes. Her lectures are interchangeable with the book (which is where she draws her lectures from).

>Her tests aren't that hard, but the home work and the projects (usually 2 papers, up to three pages long) are a bit more challenging.

>Take her if you're interested in modern China or want help with your senior thesis.

>Strict but fair in terms of grading.

I havent gotten completely through the course yet, therefore no grade, sorry! Actually, I am studying for her final.

}Personality- She is a very nice person. She tries hard to remember her students' names and also asks for suggestions.

}Class- It can be bland since it very routine. attendance, Quizzes every other week, 45 min. lectures, turn in hw, then discussion time. Btw, she loves students who participate and do their at home reading. She also updates Blackboard often with revisions and other things like assignments and study guides, which are very helpful. Her tests (one mid, final) are tricky. She hates multi. choice, therefore, it mostly essay questions. They arent exactly according to her study guides either.

}Overall-pretty good teacher, but can be boring.

}tip: be on time. She notices many things and will say something.

Dr. Mickey is nice and has a sarcastic sense of humor. She lectures half the class along with PowerPoint presentations. Her lectures are interesting and she includes a lot of pictures for visuals, however she goes through them very fast. You will also have to turn in weekly notes on the reading. The other half of the class is discussion over the material which was always fun if you do the reading. You will have about 3 essays including a final. The only problem I had with the class was the essays, they were extremely difficult, and they are very analytical. Which is especially difficult to do with ancient Chinese primary sources. It would be hard to juggle the notes and the reading while doing the essays. Overall the class was enriching and although it can be hard at times I would still take it over again. Grade Received: B+

Freshman Experience

Dr. Mickey seems very intimidating at the beginning of the class, I myself was a bit intimidated, there is a lot of work, and she is extremely hard on punctuation and grammatical errors. I really taught that I chose the wrong teacher, however; as the quarter proceeded I really liked her and realize she really works hard at trying to bring across a sense of analytical thinking that would prepare us for our future goals. I have learnt a lot from her class I was very surprise how much I had actually learnt, being that this was a freshman class and I am currently a Jr. If you should go to her office, she is extremely friendly and I think sensitive. I highly recommend her if you really want to learn Thanks Dr. Mickey.

First of all, what is wrong with this professor? Her teaching style is boring actually. Everything is off of a powerpoint where she posts on blackboard, but you still have to go to class because she takes attendance (10% of grade). We have 2 books to read from and there would be quizzes after every single reading. Even if she doesn't announce it, expect it to come as a "pop." She gave so many pop quizzes it wasn't even like a surprise when we would have a quiz. She expects a LOT from her students, but she does not teach them anything. This was supposed to be an average GE class to get it over with, but I feel like I'm doing more work than my fall quarter and winter quarters combined. SHE FAILS! Grade Received: C-

I have had Prof. Mickey for multiple classes and have come to appreciate her style. She is a tough love kind of teacher. If she knows you can do better then you sure has hell better do so. Don't slack off and keep up with the work, if you do it is more than manageable. This is one of those professors that doesn't want to hear regurgitation, you have to actually use that lump at the top of your neck. Take her if you want to learn how to think not just pass. She's not hard, she's effective. It is true that her lectures can be boring, but its the out of class thought that you really learn from. Its college kids, step up. Grade Received: A

Pros: -Honest about what you are doing wrong in your historiography paper.

-You will LEARN how to write a historiography paper.

-Knows her materials really well.

Cons: -Be sure to participate because she will call on you.

-DO NOT SLACK OFF.
I recommend this teacher and this class she teaches for history majors. If you come out of History 100 not knowing how to write a historiography, you will come out of this class knowing it. She teaches this class well. She is helpful when you come to her office hours. I recommend that you buy the little book and read it, and also participate.

She's a nice professor that expects alot out of her students. She definitely is very knowledgable on history and seems to love it. She's open to suggestions to make the letures and disscussion more interesting. But, personally, this 100 level class was a little too much. Her class requires an above average amount of work. SO, if you love history and like a challlanges, then this is the professor you want to take. But, if you just want the "average" GE requirement kind of class, then I advise you to take someone else. do not take her if you are looking for an easy A to cover a GE. she is a very nice lady who is very smart, but she is very challenging. every class has assigned readings with online quizzes due. she has quizzes after every chapter and they are in paragraph form, therefore you must know what is going on in class. she also assigns two essays which are not easy again. there is a group project. the best part is she gives study guides for the midterm and final which look exactly like the tests. Dr. Mickey is a very nice teacher and appreciated me to have in her class. Her online BB quizzes were easy points. Her two papers required a lot of thought and I got a B- on both of them. The in-class quizzes were not easy and they were not hard. In order to do well on them, you have to read the books. There is one mid-term and one final. They are both the same kind of format and they can get tricky. Attendance and participation counts, so be there and say something. Grade Received: B

I liked her. Many students didnt and always complained about her and her teachings, I think her grading scale was reasonable, and some of the assingments were fun. We had two essays, a midterm, and a final. The only thing that upset me was that at times she was teaching as if we were an upper divison class, when we were in realilty a 100 level class.
