This instructor is a really bad teacher and can be your worst nightmare! He brags about Canadians, suggesting that Americans are of a lesser class. He ridicules other lecturers because he thinks his teaching methods are superior to theirs. He has many downfalls when it comes to teaching. First, he speaks extremely fast with a noticeable accent, making comprehension difficult at times. He releases lecture notes covering every chapter however, the downside to this is that he makes them available only after he's lectured. He introduces "FastCat", a fictional company that you must design a pay system for. Many students will ask, "What I am suppose to do", or "What do you expect from me", but Ng's vague answers will leave you more confused. Bear in mind that you're not worthy of Ng's time if you ask "unintelligent" questions. In fact, you'll most likely displease him if you simply don't understand. But don't worry if you're an overachiever, Ng has a special way of noticing "gold" and will find a way to ignore the rest of the class. This teacher may be a perfect example of one who is unwilling to give students the respect, understanding, and guidance they deserve. It's evident that students are just an annoyance to put up with in order to receive a paycheck and enjoy a sabbatical leave. One last note for all that's interested, if Ng is such a proud Canadian, what is he doing here in California? Sellout... eh? Grade Received: B-

I really cannot understand why so many people complain about this class. I personally found it very enjoyable and found Ng to be a fabulous professor. He really cares about your learning and teaches you well. The class consists of two midterms and one final. Ng does an extensive review before his tests which really help you do well (do not miss them!). Just study the power point and maybe a little out of the book on the topics he tells you and you will do just fine. He curves the test too! Then of course there is the Fast Cat report. My advice: just make decisions. He is just looking for your recommendations and WHY you chose them. There is no wrong answer, he just wants a good explanation. Try to present for the first phase because it seems to be easier. Keep your report to 7 pages and look at the samples he gives you for advice. Lastly, his grading scale is helpful 70-79 is a B 80-89 is an A- and 90-100 is an A. This helps! Grade Received: A

Had same teacher from MHR 311 and MHR 413. This class is a lot harder than MHR 311. There is 2 midtermn and a final. Midterm is hard. Study by reading the text and study his PPT notes. Final was fairly reasonable. His project (Fastcat)is difficult so make sure that you choose the right people for your team. There is one presentation (10 mins) which is not bad, but the project is hard since the professor does not like to give directions. You have to read the game manual to do the project, but the instructions on the manual is very vague. His grading is the best (80% and above is an A) and he curves on all the test which helps the whole class. Overall, the class is hard but you need to study and understand the concept in order to pass. I would recommend Dr. Ng cause the teacher does a good job in explaining the topics for each chapter and he encourages student to participate. Also, the teacher is fully of enthusiasm. I had Professor Ng for MHR 311 and 413. He is very energetic and calls on people if he notices that the class is way too quiet - hence the tent cards. I thought his compensation class was very interesting. I know a lot of students' comments indicate that he's vague when it comes to the FastCat simulation, however, my group and I read and reread through the entire simulation booklet before we asked him any questions. Once we were able to ask him SPECIFIC questions, he was more than helpful. He rejects the idea that he has to tell you everything related to the project. I felt that he was reasonable in answering the questions and enabling our group to provide a better analysis. We ended up getting an A on the project. Exams are tough, but everything is on the lecture notes (except the Canadian and hockey questions). Pick a reliable group! It matters! And study for the exams. Would recommend him. Grade Received: A-

Canadian teacher who is very knowledge about the course. Has a lot of great stories about his previous job experiences. There is a midterm and a final which is hard if you don't study his PPT or read the textbook. There is a group project in which each group makes weekly decisions about how to spend your budget. The only problem with the Dr. Ng is that he does not like to give instructions so you have to read the whole simulations (player's) manuel to understand how to do the group project. Also, he doesn't give your group much time to make the decisions, usually within 2 days. Gives your group results back on Tuesday and the next decision set is due the next class meeting. At the end of the course, there is a report due regarding the decisions that your group made. There is no research involve. Pretty easy. Grade Received: A-

Professor Ng is an awesome guy! The class however isn't the easiest that I've taken at Cal Poly though ... His grading scale is amazing (thank you for being Canadian!!!). Study for the tests because they are very challenging, but they're curved to the highest grade in the class, so it helps out a bit. Hardest part of the class though is the Group Simulation Project! Seriously, make sure you pick a good group that's willing to put in the time and effort to create a good project! If you get stuck with a bad group that's dependent on you to do all the work, you're screwed! But overall, I would take Professor Ng for any class that he's teaching ... Awesome Professor

Very hectic and confusing but a really nice teacher. Do not buy the book because it is a waste of money. I didn't use it once. The tests are pretty hard and I believe I got a D and C but he curves it pretty steep so it turned into a pretty good grade. The simulation is crazy. You're suppose to meet up with your group like once a week which is very hard. Even with all that said, take his class because his grading scale is ridiculously good. If it was a normal class I would have been borderliine C/D but i got a B in the class. Take the class, you'll be stressed a little but you'll end up with a good grade. Grade Received: B

Prof. Ng is a good teacher. This class is a bit boring since is an Intro. to HR but he makes the material entertaining. He does talk about Canada a lot mainly because he grew up there. The class consists of 2 Midterms and a Final. Which were easy if you read the Powerpoints he does and skim the textbook. One thing you do in this class is work on a Simulator which is of a company and you make all the HR decision about the company. You also do a Summary of each decision each week and in the end a final Paper of all the decision you did. He curves !!! Grade Received: B

This is the best professor I have had at Cal Poly Pomona and I am a third year now. He gave great real life examples and would take the time to answer any questions people may have had. He is a funny guy, and can even keep people awake at 8 am. That's impressive! There was a simulation as if you were in charge of HR for a firm and it started out ambiguous but you learn as you go, otherwise known as 'learn by doing'. Great professor, great class. this professor has a really good grading scale, 80%+ equals an A-, and so thats pretty nice. his class is boring at times but fun at times it really depends on the class, and people who participate. lecture itself can be boring but if you have questions ask away because thats what makes this class interesting. midterm and final is hard, so study! but he does curve but dont count on the curve if someone aces the test its over for you. Professor Ng is a good teacher but not very detailed. He expects you to know what he wants. His syllabus is not clear at all and its hard to follow what is going to be covered in class. We have a simulation game that requires you to meet 1 or 2 a week with your group members, which is very time consuming. Class material is not hard at all, i just don't like his way of teaching. Not very organized. Grade Received: A-

First of all let me tell you that if your in class you wont get bored. He is always excited and want students to participate. He is a great teacher and his greading rubric is awsome.. something liike 85-100 is an a.... 85---72 is a B.. things of that nature. His lectures are on point with his test which happen to be very easy. I would reccomend this teacher to everyone taking mhr 311 Grade Received: B+

Professor Ng is a great teacher! He loves giving real-life examples of theories and concepts. Be sure to read the chapters assigned as the midterm and final consist of multiple choice questions. The good news is that he has completely different grading scale. 100-80 = A, 79-70= B, 69-60=C. He is a cool teacher. I would definitely take him again. Grade Received: A-

I love Professor Ng! He is very knowledgable, lotsa stories about his experiences and how they relate to MHR. He is the only teacher brave enough 2 teach Compensation. Everyone hates it. But everyone loves him, so thats why he said he teaches it. He is the best teacher for MHR 311 and 413, i took him for both. Farmer is pretty awesome as well Grade Received: A-

This was one of the most difficult class I have taken at Cal Poly. The direction is very limited and Fast Cat is very difficult. The test was real hard and long. It took over 1hr to get through the midterm. I do not recomend this class to anyone. The instructor is a real nice guy and I might have enjoyed him for another class, but not compensation.

Smart and energetic Canadian. Brand spanking new professor to the school. This is a pretty demanding class because "it is an upper level course." The first test given contained 90 questions. The project, so far, is not easy. He grades on a curve because of this. Book costs a lot too. Be ready if you're going to take this compensation course.

I took this teacher for mhr 311 and this class is harder. His class is interesting and he has a good way of teaching, but the group project is a nightmare. Make sure u pick a good team because he doesnt really give explanation on it and all you have to rely on is the book and your team mates. Grade Received: B-
