This Professor is extremely unfair, prejudice, belittles students, and does not grade fairly!!! If you value your GPA or self esteem (as another student said) DON'T TAKE HIM! I put much effort into this class and was astonished at my grade...first F I have ever got and undeservingly. CAUTION: His syllabus reads "To pass this course, you must receive a min. passing grade in the TWO TESTS. or else you do not pass the class!". If you do not answer his written exams verbatim he slashes your grade more than half, even if you got the multiple choice perfect and you know the subject. He want's his students to repeat "his definition" verbatim regardless, even if you understand the concepts it must be his exact definition. He is a strange, difficult man that should not be teaching anyone, except himself on how to be a better professor. Professors should inspire you, not make you suffer, not belittle you, or be rude to you...instead they should inspire. Sethia is the opposite...extremely uninspiring, rude, discouraging, and has NOT got a clue what he is doing to students. It's to bad..CPP should remove him! Grade Received: F

Sethia is a unreasonably hard grader. The content of the whole class is not difficult at all. As a graduate student who works under corporate settings, I live and breath the corporate life as depicted in the textbook. Honestly speaking, I did not learn anything from this class -- it was more like a walk-through/reminder of what you deal with on business life. All we did in this class was memorizing termonologies and applied them in the exams. It was a very boring class wasting our time for 4 hours every week.

What people said about him were quite accurate. He was very anal about the terminologies and cases he used in class and did not allow much creativity. Don't try to answer questions with your own examples -- it will ruin your grade. In addition, he graded group project very hard and no one got an A for group project -- do not expect that your group project will help your grade. In order to get an A, you got to get "A" for every other parts (midterm, final, and participation). As most people mentioned, the time limit he set for the exams was very tight and you did have to compete with time. Write as fast as you can -- it's the only way you could get a good grade.

Try to take an equivalent class from undergraduate program if he is the only professor for GBA535; otherwise, you got very good chance to destroy your grade (you really could get a grade below "B" and your company will not pay the tuition for you if you are sponsored by your company).

I can tell he has some knowledge of the subject and he tries very hard to keep your attention by cracking jokes. BUT his teaching style SUCKS!!! He would probably be better off staying at home writing a book on this subject than teaching it to students. Motivating students should be an important part of being a professor, and he just can't seem to grasp that. He'll shoot down any answer you give him, right or wrong. Most of his essay questions on exams required examples from the movie "12 Angry Men." I've seen that movie at least 3 times, so I know it well enough. I even watched it again to check if my examples were correct and they were. He wanted word-for-word definitions so I gave him the same exact definition as what was on the slides. But he still docked points... Like everyone else said, if it's not worded the way he wants it (whether he has mentioned what he wants or not), the answer is wrong. Attendance is a big part of the grade, so I tried to go everyday. But after awhile, I didn't care if he docked a whole letter grade, I just didn't want to be there. The multiple choice questions are pretty easy (some questions appear in multiple tests). The essay questions are the hard part. I don't even know how he'll be grading the group project and presentation... My final words: AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS!!! (if I had to take this prof more than once, I would've changed my major just to avoid him)

I have noticed that many comments for this teacher are very negative, so I will try to keep mine fair.

On the surface, Dr. Sethia seems very shy and unconfident in his teaching abilities. He does not ever encourage you to answer questions by acknowledging a correct answer (For example, if he asks "the class" a question and you get it right, you'll never know it, because he treats it like a wrong answer.) He also has a very narrow perspective in his grading; if your answer was not exactly word for word what he had in mind, you will lose points, and the correct answer is never clear in essay questions. His general attitude towards students seems untrustworthy and disrespectful to me. I don't think he does this intentionally, but the result was that every minute in his class was like torture, and I felt like every time I spoke up in class that he resented me for it (especially if I got the answer right away.) There were a lot of attacks on his English but personally I understood every word; it's just that he's so unclear in his concepts, and then expects you to memorize word for word what he said in class. Don't take this teacher: you won't learn anything except how to work hard for nothing.

This professor has to be the absolute worst i have ever taken... and I've taken BAD, TERRIBLE teachers. His grading is so anal, that u can write forever and extensively in his tests or any form of writing, but if he doesn't find 1 word he's looking for, he'll give u a B-. He's NEVER EVER clear on what he wants, either on exams or projects, and he docks off points if we forget something that he never even mentioned! I get a sense that he takes pleasure in our pains, and that he just can't get himself to give ANYBODY a fair grade. His teaching is also very unrefined, making a fun subject into ABSOLUTE TORTURE, making most of his students wanting to jab a pencil in their eyes rather than pay attention in class. His accent is understandable, but the way he talks and mumbles sounds like something that comes out of a monkey's ass. I've seen 'A' students work their asses off, and totally come to a shock as soon as they get their grades. DON'T TAKE THIS TEACHER! ABSOLUTE WORST TEACHER IN CAL POLY, or anywhere... and I've had over 100 teachers over my lifetime...

Everything in this board said about Sethia is outright true. His poor rating is not a coincidence. To be fair, he did intent to teach, but teaching should not be his profession. He really needs to re-examine his approach or method. What he really lacks of is the skill to pass on a structural set of knowledge that we can build on to learn more about the subject in the future.

}Since attending CalPoly MBA, this is the first time I learn nothing from a class. Few of my classmates also shared the same opinion. If you really want to learn something about org mgnt, try another professor. It is better off to read the text at home instead of wasting four hours with him each week.

}Here are the grading components: A mid-term that includes m/c and essay (4 out 5 questions). A final that shares the similar format. A "Gung Ho" movie (featured Michael Keaton) you must saw and remembered in order to answer his questions. A group project (paper and presentation) which may suck up quite a few days of your time. Plus, an individual presentation of a special topic assigned to you. By the way, he stated his tests were not speed test. That was wrong! You must write fast in order to complete the 1 hour test. Given the sheer amount of answers/examples he expects, you have to use the time VERY efficiently. Beware, you must give the precise answer he expects to score point.

}MHR dept should not assign him teaching introductory courses. Doing so will only discourage student from majoring in MHR.

Horrible professor! STAY AWAY FROM SETHIA HE WILL RUIN YOUR GPA AND YOUR SELF-ESTEEM! I must say that he is absolutely the worst professor that I have ever seen in my life. His lectures are long and boring. His tests are next to impossible if you don't give him the exact wording he is looking for and you must use the examples that he gives in class, not the book. If you do happen to be unlucky enough to have to take his class, here are some tips. 1. Don't raise your hand to answer any of his questions, it won't help you win brownie points and he'll answer it on his own anyway. 2. Copy down all the projector slides and the examples that he puts up, even if he says it's in the book, he'll mark you down on your test if you use the examples and wording in the book. Instead, regurgetate everything that he says and puts up in class. 3. When you do your group project, make sure that you pick an organization that you have easy access to, like your workplace that way you can quickly and easily get your information. 4. Find a way to make your presentation interesting (ie gifts, a quiz, prizes) because Sethia's attention span is the equivilent of a 3 year-old, if he loses interest in your presentation, you're screwed.

Well, first the good part. The subject matter is very applicable to my business life. The book was very good and I am using what I read almost daily--even after being at my company for 8+ years...........But now the bad news. Sethia is a pretty poor professor--must be excellent at research. Class participation is paramount, but you will be admonished often and never complemented for your contributions. Here's how to get an 'A' in this class.1. Make sure you get in a good group--if you don't you will be doing a lot of work.2. Scan the assigned chapters in the book before class, and in lieu of taking notes, just highlight whatever he talks about--don't worry about reading anything3. 1 week prior to the test, he tells you exactly what he will test on. It will be less than 100 pages total. Learn everything this week and learn it well--he wants in-depth answers.4. Unfortunately, you need to go to class every week or you will be docked. Bring your laptop and surf the net.5. Lastly, After the forst test he will show a movie 'Gung Ho' Watch it closely as I could not find a rental version anywhere and it will be a big portion of the final. Also--please tell him I said he was a prick--thanks!

Worst professor that I have had at Cal-Poly. I can't comprehend why Cal-Poly will have such professor on their staff. Extremely poor communication skills which makes it very hard for students to understand the subject that is being taught. He practices favoritism towards people who are Indian decendents or Whites. If you are not part of these groups please avoid him at all cost. His exams consist of multiple choice and essay questions. The majority of students always did well on the multiple choice questions but on the essay questions is where plays his stupid favoritism game. This is where he heavily deduct points on the essay question for students of the races that he does not favorite. I personally compared my essay answers with other students who did well on their exams and mine were practically identical and he still did not give the points I deserved. I'm an 'A' student and I end up with a 'C' on his course. AVOID AN UNFAIR INSTRUCTOR WHO PRACTICES FAVORITISM!!!

This teacher is seriously the worst teacher I have ever had at Cal Poly. His grading critera is totally designed for you to do horrible. You have to pass every one of his tests if you fail a test you fail the class. So his grading scale is really not what is stated on the syllabus. His tests a little bit of multiple choice and the rest is subjective in which he docks you off for everything. I am a fairly good writer and I got every multiple choice question right on his midterm and he marked me off the writing part of the test to the point of me getting a C on his midterm. I am going to complain to the school because he doesn't even give you your grades back in a reasonable time, he is stubborn as hell, and doesn't listen to you. I am an engineering major and go figure I got a better grade in thermodynamics then this basic G.E. Take it from me boycott his class because this is ridiculous. Grade Received: C-

I hate this teacher. This teacher is such an ass. I'm not the only one that thinks this because everyone that I have taken this class with hates this guy. First of all his lectures are hella boring and his test are a pain in the ass because on his essay parts it seems that there is no way to get a good grade on the essay portion. first I would use my own examples (which seem easy to understand), but that wasn't good enough, then on the second test I would his examples and it still wasn't good enough for this MOFO. I studied my ass off for this guys class, I studied way more in his class than any of the other three classes that i had, and this MOFO gives me a C- (It still ain't good enough). So now I have to take this class over again, well at least I know not to ever take this MOFO ever in my life. This teacher is a certified ass.

He is knowledgable. He is one of those people that knows his stuff but can't teach it. He is very picky on his exams, his is the only multiple choice i have ever seen where "G" is an option. Yes A-G all of the above is usually a C or D, but usually wrong.

}He will discect your essay exams and tell you where to find the info, but his tests are cummulative and so you are responsible for 7 chapters, several cases, several videos and lectures that we've had in the beginning of class.

}Ex. On one of my exams he wrote "More information about this on Pgs 10-15" on the VERY NEXT QUESTION "More information about this on Pg. 256". The book is just over 400 pages and two weeks later you have your second exam. It says on the syllabus that if you fail an exam you fail the class, almost half the class didn't show up after the exam.

}But he IS a nice guy, just a hard grader. Remember Full Metal Jacket? The more you hate me the more you will learn...kinda like that.

}Its a Business and society class, which means it covers pollution, sweatshops, etc. I USED to be pationate about those issues, now i praise Nike and all its efficient glory.

I really didn't understand where this guy was coming from. He made a course like MHR 318- which is all about job satisfaction and absenteeism and other really simple concepts- and made it into a roller coaster to hell. For starters, we awards NEGATIVE points if you upset him in anyway. So not only will you get 0 participation points, he'll actually work to take away points you earned elsewhere. He got upset with me for opting not to answer a question when he called on me. Tests were kinda and but his grading was unfair. All the tests include essays. He does love 12 Angry Men, so just mention that all over your essay every time. There's a huge group project, with interviews, presentation and 10 page paper. I was in a group of four- 2 of us passed the class, and 2 didn't, even though we all did a lot of work and did try very hard. I still have no idea how I got a B-, I got Cs on the test and a D on the quiz, but if my group project was so good, how come 2 members in my group didn't pass the class? Take anyone else, seriously. I wanted to provide feedback from a graduate student who has experienced many styles of teaching. First and foremost, Sethia is a terrible professor. Luckily, I have only had one other professor like him in my college experience. Sethia treats students as if they are children. When he asks the class a question, he gives a little "grunt" as if he is really displeased with your answer, even though you may be right. His grading is not very clear. I received a B- for participation without understanding why... I paid attention in class and frequently attempted to answer questions he posed to the class. His tests are extremely long and difficult for the time period he gives you. If you miss even ONE word, he will dock you points. He doesn't believe in the book as he expects you to learn from what he lectures and tells you the book is wrong. Part of the final even included an exercise that we did for 10 minutes sometime in the 3rd or 4th weeek of class... keeping in mind he never turned it back. If you can avoid Sethia, I HIGHLY encourage it.

DO NOT take this teache. he shouldnt even be teaching MHR with his engineering degrees! you cant understand a damn word this guys says in class. and he expects you to repeat what he says in his test. because if you go by the book, you fail the test... yup. so why even buy the book? if you dare take this guys, dont buy the book. it will only do you wrong when it comes to the test. he is horrible. i went to go see him in his office about my test. and he told me. "if i didnt say it in class then why would you use it in the test, you cant use your own examples.." wtf. i regret taking this idiot. horrible horrible. oh and the goup project is BS! every single group has to do the same thing, so you will sit through about 10 of the EXACT SAME presentations. you cant pick your own subject. everyone does the same thing. Who hired him? and why? Cal Poly should be ashamed for having this guy as a teacher here.

This "professor" is TERRIBLE. All of the reviews below are true. He is rude to students, he talks down to them and when you answer his question correctly, he never says "good, you got it right" he goes on with his own definition as if yours is wrong. I'm not sure why he became a professor. I took his class and advised him on the first day that I would be out of town for a full week and will have to miss 2 class sessions. He said thats fine, come back to him in 2 weeks and remind him. I did and he said we had a final during those days that I could not make up. LOVELY. Instant D in the class. So I reminded him that he initially said it would be fine, and he said I would need some kind of evidence of my trip being pertinent for me to go. A whole mess. I ended up dropping and receiving a W and then having a 4 hour gap in between 2 classes. Total jerk. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.

I took this professor in the Summer 08' and he made it to be one of the worst class experiences alteast for most of the class. The learning material is not hard except when you get the test on the Short essay questions, you better have a photographic memory cause he wants you to quote the book word for word literally!

}Many are times that he was condescending,we'd have discussions in class except it wasn't one because only his thoughts and suggestions were right so why even bother. Oh, his grading never explained but he always had a way of justifying how he graded your work so I'm glad I was done with him. To be honest, let him be a last resort if you have to take a class with him. Being a senior, this was a last resort and if God forbid he teaches another class that I desperately need, I would rather take an additional quarter than to be in his class.

Just by showing up to class and studying 30 min before an exam, it's absolutely easy to get a C+ or higher. But if you're planning on an A, forget this guy. Shakespeare will screw up on his writing exam, cuz Sethia is not the smartest or most open minded teacher. When you ask him a question, he disrespects the student by barking back, "I've already told you 3 times"!?!?!?, when nobody clearly remembers a word of what he said (most likely cuz he forgets which class he told it to). His personality seems like he got picked on alot when he was younger: his voice shakes alot and he gets very defensive. I asked him to go over my test to question his grading, and he just went berserk and refused to do it. WTF? I learned nothing from his class, and most everyone who comes out of his class will think one of two things: either he's a prick or a 50yr old virgin.

Avoid this prof. His lectures are boring, and he does not allow electronic devices in his class (not even laptops to take notes.) OB should be a fairly straight forward subject, but he makes is more complicated than it really is. If you decide to take him, these is what you should expect: 1 quiz (multiple choice), 2 midterms (part MC, and part essay) he may give you a study guide, but when it comes to his essay questions--he expects you to write your answers exactly as it would be found on the book--any variation from the book will cost you major points. Multiple choice questions tend to be very tricky as well. Oh.. and one more thing--a group project which consists of a research paper, and a presentation--just like in any class, make sure you select your group mates carefully or that would cost you... that's what happened to me. Please avoid this professor if you can. But if you MUST take this class and he is the only professor left, then I suggest to study HARD. Not only study hard, but memorize everything. His exams are accumulative and some of the multiple choice questions are tricky along with his essay questions. The questions itself aren't hard, it's just that he already has an expectation in mind of what you ought to write and if you don't write what he wants you to write, he will take major points off your exam. If you don't pass any of the 2 exams, you won't pass the class. And keep in mind you only get 1 hour to finish the exam. When he lectures, you're not sure what main point is he trying to say because it's all over the place. And when you try to answer his questions in class, he makes it seem like you're not right. You leave the class very depressed.
