Pros: Great upper division B5 or D4. Spend half of EVERY class session in the gym doing relaxation exercises.
Cons: A little boring sometimes. Weekly book summaries sucked (but definitely bearable).

Professor Spalding is definitely a laid back guy. He knows A LOT about the subject, so much so that he doesn't use a book! Pros: Easy, nice guy! Super laid back and a very reasonable person!!

Tests and quizzes are all online! He uses blackboard faithfully which makes things even easier!
Cons: Lectures are BORING but you have to go to class because when you do the relaxation exercises he takes roll and you get points.
Very nice guy! He knows alot about the subject and gives you the opportunity to do relaxation exercises which none of the other Stress teachers do! Half the class period you do lecture then you go to the gym and do relaxation which is amazing!!!

Tests can be hard but you take it at home online so you can use your notes even though he asks you not to! Dont have to take notes in class he tests off the powerpoints he has on blackboard.

Not really any work you have to do for this class except you have to read a book ( off a list he provides) and do a simple report each week.... the book I chose was very very easy less than 100 pages and in large print so pick your book wisely, this assignment took me like 20mins to do each week! RECOMMEND! Easy A!

So I took this class Fall 2007 and it was On-line and was suppose to be taught by Gilbert Quintanar but he bailed and it was taken over by Spalding. This happened about 4 weeks in to the class. The class is simple 10 Discussions(10 Points) and 10 Application Assignmnents(40 Points). Also 3 Exams made upof 50 Questions from Powerpoint slides. The thing I had a problem with this class and the instructor is he didn't seem to care about it until the end of the quarter. The thing that also sucks about this class if you take at the Home Exams only get 50 Min. to answer 50 questions with out going back to see or review previous questions. You can also take the exams at the LRC in which they give you 120 minutes to do your test and you can go back and review previous questions. Overall this class was awful because he taught it he couldn't even revise the syllabus when he wated tomake changes because he was to busy(LAZY). Grade Received: B-

Pros: Easy class
Cons: Boring
Dr. Spalding is very nice and has a great dry humor. He is very passionate about the material and he knows his stuff. He lectures for long stretches of time and it is very boring. He does give breaks on the hour, but he will almost always keep the class until the very end.

He is very accommodating and will work with you. The class asked him to reduce the amount of assignments and he agreed. Though it can be boring, I'd definitely take the class again.

Winter 02 - The structure of this class is a midterm and a final. The material is extremely hard, but Dr. Spalding has a review session for his midterm and his final. It is strongly recommended that you attend the study session because the information that he gives is very accurate towards the midterm and final. Just go to the study session and you'll get at least a C in the class. I went to the study session and i ended up with a B. It sounds easy but make sure you take GREAT notes during his study session. This quarter he provided a good amount of extra credit points, which still didn't get me an A in the class. To tell you the truth, the materials in the class is very boring, and it is damm hard to get an A for the class. He grading scale is a solid A,B,C,D,and F. he does not give you a Plus or Minus, which sucks because i was 2 points away from getting an A for the class, which i am pretty sure many students has the same situation. I somewhat recommend this class because he does not take attendance and his session are the only days that you need to attend class. Again, this class was very very boring. Good luck.

Ok, so I had heard about this class and knew that it would be a bit challenging. The class was pretty much an entire disaster. For the first few weeks I did not receive one email from a professor and I had no clue what was going on in the class. The prof decided to duck out of the class and Dr. Spalding took over. The material is not that difficult but you really have to be on top of things and remember to do the homework by the designated date/time. Deadlines and class format seemed to change through-out the quarter. The only thing that saved me from failing was going over the review sheet and answering all of the questions before taking the online final. I went through all of the lectures and took tons of notes to barely get a B- on the final. My final grade in the class was a 144/200, a C/C-, which was fine with me. When I looked at my grades on Bronco Direct, Spalding gave everyone A's, confusing me even more. A day later I got am email saying he, once again, made a mistake, and was going to adjust the grades. Take this is not that difficult, just beware! Grade Received: C-

Pros: No textbook

1 hour session for relaxation exercises/yoga
Cons: tells the same stories over and over
I took this course over a compressed 5 week schedule in summer. Dr. Spalding is a pretty relaxed and easy going guy. He knows that sitting through 4 hours of class can be pretty boring so he likes to give his students a 10 minute break every hour. His course isn't very difficult at all. He doesn't even require a textbook.

He does his whole class based off a culmination of other books and his own personal knowledge. He likes to tell stories, usually about his family, to relate the information to his students. However, he tends to tell the same stories over and over again as if it is new information to you.

His quizzes and exams are done online via blackboard. He tells you not to use your notes or use powerpoints, but he obviously isn't going to stop you from doing that when you're at home. Overall, pretty easy class so long as you show up and do the weekly book reports.

This class was extremely easy and interesting. It deals with stress management and all the information you learn from this class is quite informative and might even help you out when you are stressed out. There are a lot of things to memorize, but he always gives a study guide which is like the exact replica of the quiz or final except it is in different order. He is a very relaxed and chill teacher. His lectures are amusing and fun to listen to. ALthough he doesn't take attendance, well only the first two weeks or so, you should still go during the first month and a half. He makes everyone go to the aerobic room in the gym and does relaxation techniques. He turns off all the lights and everyone gets to relax and even sleep! How great is that. To get points to sleep, or relax. So make sure you don't miss classes when he does that, those are freebies. I highly recommend him!

I like this teacher. His class is not hard. He cancelled the research paper that we had to do, so the grade was based on the 1 midterm, 1 not-culmarative final, 3 quizzes (4th one got cancelled), and 2-3 assignments that only worth 6-10 points. He's very lenient. He went over the quizzes questions before the quiz day, and went over materials that he will cover on the midterm and the final, sometimes he even gave us the answers. All the tests were multiple choice. He took half of the class time to go up to the gym and do relaxation activity, and every time we attend it he gave us extra points because that attendence was not required. Overall, I like his teaching method. His very kind. And I enjoyed the relaxation section the most, I always feel much better after do it. Grade Received: C

Pros: Professor is very knowledgeable about health promotion subject matter, current events, KHP policies, and always interacts with students in a helpful and respectful manner.
Dr. Spalding is spoken very highly of among many KHP students. As a professor he is extremely fair and looks for consensus among his students to determine if projects need further explanation and time to work on them, enabling students to better master the skills being taught. I also took his KIN 479 class, and he conducts both courses with the same fairness. The tests are not too difficult if you have the book and listen to the major concepts he explains during class. Overall he is a great professor that I would truly recommend.

This is a new professor. He's been teaching at Cal Poly for a few quarters. He's an ok guy. Knows his subject very well. He tries to help the students out. The problem is that the subject is too boring!! There are way too much information to remember. Also, this professor tends to be a little formal and wordy. Students can download the notes and study guides from his web page, but that doesn't mean you can skip his class. There are some topics you can't get from reading the book alone. I'd also recommend going to his review sessions for the midterm and final. That helps a lot. However, I'd rather take professor Brown. Her class is funner.

This class was okay. The teacher gave 1 midterm and a final plus some quizzes. These are helpful for it gets you to start studying and reading to get prepared for the tests. There are alot of things to memorize, but it was an okay class. I enjoyed it since there were no term papers or presentations so your grade is determined by how well you do in the tests. I recommend you go to the study sessions before the midterm and the final for he goes over the items that will be on the tests. The teacher is sometimes not organized for he posts the lecture notes a little late, but other than that he is alright.

I will start by saying: be prepared for a lot of writing. The writing is not challenging by any means but there's a lot of it EACH week and it's rather dull to boot. I would generally answer 1 question (about 10 assigned per week) on one page single-spaced on word and receive an 7 or 8 out of 10. After a few weeks I stopped trying and received the same grades. Tests are a bit hard unless you really commit to studying and memorizing PowerPoint slides (which are very, very boring). He's friendly enough but his material is very dull, sometimes pointless and long. Grade Received: B+

I took the online version of this course and received an A. I'm HORRIBLE when it comes to using computers and at first doubted that I could succeed. Professor Spalding is very accomodating and understanding. The course was 5 weeks, which meant that you were doing two weeks worth of homework in one week. But it wasn't as bad as it sounds. It is an easy "A" if you stick with it. The assignments and exams are simple and to the point. However, if you take the midterm and final exam at home be aware of the time allotment (that about the only challenging thing).

This class was Stress Management but gave me more stress than skills to overcome stress. Awful experience!!! I regret taking this online class. Theres a bunch of little assignments, weekly discussions, and 3 exams. The class went from Quintinajar to Spalding, it made the whole class confusing and it was an online class to begin with. Exams are based on lectures not on books, so if you want to do well in the exams you have to sit around listening to long tedious Breeze Powerpoints. Grade Received: B+

I think that this was a very useful class to take. There are many things you can learn in this class that may help you later in life. There are two exams and four quizes. Spalding gives sample questions that also appear on the tests and he tells you the answers if you are awake. There is no good reason to do badly in this class. He even provides the opportunity for extra credit if you still need to raise your grade by one letter. Overall, I recomend Spalding for this class.

I had him in the fall of 06. Lectures are extremely boring because of how the material is presented. It is a dry class. He does not have much personality does make an effort to know your name in class. He provides study guides for all quizzes and tests. Study these and you will ace the tests. Don't buy the book. Otherwise it is a fairly easy class if you can survive his painfully dull lectures.

Dr. Spalding is pretty much one of the nicest professors you will ever have. He brings snacks which is so nice. He is really funny without him even knowing it. He gives you study guides for every quiz and test and that is exactally what is on the test. He is very knowledgable and relates the material to everyday life. I would definately take him again.

This is a bull shit class. Don't waste your time taking this course, unless you're a KIN major. It's damn boring!! You're not gonna learn anything. I made the mistake of registering and talking my friend into taking this class with me and now it's too late for us to drop it. Take something else, like BIO 301, at least you'll learn something in BIO.
