HIST 512
Reading Seminar: U.S. Since 1877
5*****
Professor Fiege represents the CSU history department's best. He is a motivated, brilliant, and compassionate man devoted to his students' professional and personal success. To find such intelligence and personality in one person is extraordinary. Professor Fiege's scholarship receives wide recognition beyond the department and consistently earns him the respect of scholars at the most elite universities. His is a profound mind that leaves anyone seriously engaged with him forever changed. I give him the highest recommendation possible.

This guy was great. He was very passionate and animated. He was also extremely approachable. His tests are eassay but the terms were fairly clearly laid out so they were not too difficult to do. This guy was my favorite professor to date.

HIST 355
American Environmental History
4****
Dr. Fiege is a professor who my opinion of changed over the semester. He seemed to me to be a bit arrogant at first, but after a while as he got to know the class, and especially individual people, he loosened up. He is good at provoking discussion without taking control (he never really lectured), and is respectful of ideas even when he doesn't agree with them. He gets the class to discuss topics with each other instead of just him, and coax out the meanings of different books. The few times I approached him for help I found him to be very understanding and willing to help. The class is steep in its grading, 25% attendance, 25% for midterm and final, and 25% for term paper, but he recognizes improvement and effort. The books in the course (environmental history) were all over the place too, some great, and some utterly boring

HIST 355
American Environmental History
5*****
Pros: Good book selections

Exam questions given before the test

Interesting lectures
Cons: Not structured lectures

Pop quizzes

Takes attendance

Dr. Fiege is hands down my favorite professor at CSU. He does not lecture in a structured way, which probably drives some people nuts, but his more extemporaneous approach encourages discussion between the students and him about environmental history that is way more useful than listening to him rambling on. Fiege is probably the friendliest and most helpful professor I've had since I've been here; he is enthusiastic when it comes to class material and readings and strives to be useful to his students. So...if you get the chance, you should take his class.

HIST 355
American Environmental History
5*****
Pros: Funny, witty, very knowledgeable
Cons: rambles during his lectures, but it's typically funny and interesting.
Great professor, I looked forward to going to class. He rambles during lectures, but the tangents he goes on are entertaining and usually a nice break from the actual lecture. He is very willing to help you outside of class and encourages people to stop by his office for any extra help. He offers extra credit in class too. By far one of my favorite professors at CSU. Go to class because he takes attendance, take some notes, but mainly just listen to him. Tests are relatively easy as long as you attended class.

HIST 463
Science and Technology in Modern History
5*****
Dr. Fiege is one of the most knowledgeable proffessors I've had at CSU. I took American Enviro. History from him, and that is his field of study. He is far from arrogant, very approachable and easy to talk to. He will go out of his way to help you, if needed. Readings were dense and sometimes long, but not too bad. Grading for the class I took, was 60% based on 3 essays, and 40% based on attendence and participation. No Tests. I definitely reccomend taking a class with Fiege if you get the chance.

Dr. Fiege is one of the few professors who has the ability to really get into the material that he is teaching. He was never boring, and always taught what was necessary in a very unbiased way. Definitely take this class with this professor, and don't take the chance of getting somebody who is boring and doesn't care.

HIST 151

1*
Pros: He really likes history
Cons: everything about him his class and his TA's
I only took this class with him because of ratings on this website and everyone who said he was great and all that.

First of all Mark Fiege is very informative and his lectures are not too bad. I went everyday and still it did not help me on his exam.

His exam is not hard its 100 terms and he wants you to know more information about each term than most students will actually study.

He likes the sound of his voice a little too much and gets mad when people leave on time and cut him from going over on time.

If your not a history major than he completely is biased towards you.

His TA's are just like him, give you a grade on papers without explaining how you got the grade maybe a few words.

His tests are graded by taking off points rather than looking at giving you points for hitting key points.

And by the way doesnt use RamCT, which I always asked myself if on of my other professors who is twice as old as he is can use RamCT effectively than so can he.

Overal dont take this class with him, try and find a professor can use modern technology, trust me.

Pros: He's passionate about History
Cons: Talks fast

Doesn't Use RamCt

Dr.Fiege is really passionate about history and it's really great when you have a teacher that is. However he teaches mostly upper level classes and treats this 100 level like that as well. You get 3 tests and 3 book reports. For the tests he gives you 100+ terms that you need to know the dates, what happened, and why it was important so that on the test you can write 3-5 sentences about only 10 of the terms. I was also sick the day a book report was due and turned it in early, and emailed him my doctors note and prescription that he asked for and said that wasn't good enough and needed to bring in the actual papers before he would even CONSIDER giving me credit for the paper.

I wouldn't take another class with him ever. The history department has many other great teachers, I'd go with one of them.

Professor Fiege rambles on like no other teacher I have had at this University. Most of the class sits with a glazed look in their eyes because he goes off on irrelevant tangents daily. The text Comanche Empire was one of the most poorly written scholarly texts I have ever had to read. It, too, rambles on endlessly, repeating itself ad nauseam to the point where an interesting topic loses any relevance or interest that a student may have in it.When he attempts to answer student questions it typically takes him about 10 minutes to get to the point, if that ever comes. He will cover irrelevant background information and dance around the point. It is unclear whether he doesn't understand the question or doesn't know the answer. In either case, I do not feel that I will leave this class having gained any more knowledge than I went in with.

I do not know what happened between the last 2 years and this semester but I have to say that this was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. The only good thing about this course was that it improved my ability to find primary documents. Going to this class was pointless as the lectures were both boring and belonged to a high school history class. I believe Prof. Fiege has the ability to be an excellent professor but he needs to put more difficulty into his class or at least make it semi-worthwhile. Overall, I was disappointed in this class. I thought it could have been a lot better and for being a senior level course, it should have been a lot better. I'm not saying not to take this class but if you want a cake class where you fall asleep during class and lectures are required, have fun. I wish you luck.

I have had the opportunity to work with Mark Fiege both as a student, a TA, and he is now my graduate advisor. I have never in my school career known a professor so dedicated to his students and their success, not just in his classes but in their entire educational career. Mark Fiege was nominated for and awarded the Eddy Teacher of the Year Award in 2004 at CSU. I cannot think of a more deserving professor. Dr. Fiege is a motivator and an exciting teacher. I highly recommend him if you are considering taking a history course.
