I found Pierre to be sometimes great, and sometimes frustration beyond words. From speaking with other people in the engineering program, I think I just had him on a bad semester, so please keep that in mind and take what I say with a grain of salt. That being said, many people in my class had to find his students from previous semesters and ask them how to approach the material. They way he taught them was much easier than the way he taught the material to us, and using his methods from former semesters really improved our understanding and grades. For whatever reason, our section got thrown under the bus on a lot of the material, so it was definitely a struggle. I completely agree with the other reviews that he knows the material very well and cares about his students, but I had several times where I went to his office hours to find that he wasn't there. Also, I had two occasions where I arranged to take a quiz I knew I would miss due to a job interview, and when I showed up he didn't let me take the quiz. There were many similar problems from other students in my section. I still think he's a good teacher, and hopefully he just had some personal issues this semester that he's been able to work out. If you take a course from him, I would recommend attending every lecture, staying on top of the homework as much as possible, and getting any arrangements you make with him in writing. All of that aside, I did leave his class with a much greater understanding of how we arrive at many of the equations used in physics, and any areas where I'm not very clear are easily modeled and computed with mathcad or matlab. If you find yourself in a place where you're having difficulty with him, just buckle down and hit this course hard. It's weighted so that you will pass through sheer will if need be!

Pierre Julien is the best professor I have had in my two years of college. His course is based on lecture, homework, quizzes and tests. The lectures move at a very slow pace and consist of a lot of examples. Pierre likes to keep the audience involved by frequently calling on people who aren't paying attention to answer his questions, he enjoys picking on certain people (Adam FRIss) more than others. The homework can be time consuming but is most definitely where a lot of the learning comes from. The problems are not from the book so it is difficult to use it as a resource but Pierre goes over the most hardest homework questions in class and then allows you some time to complete them before they are due. The quizzes are based on the lecture material and given in the last few minutes of class. They are mainly given for attendance reasons, so they are usually simple. The tests are roughly based off the homework problems that range from easy to difficult. It is helpful because the tests are open book, but you will almost certainly run out of time. Overall, I rate this teacher as excellent and as long as you don't have a name that Pierre REALLY likes to say, you will enjoy him as a professor as well. Also, Pierre puts a large curve on the class (50% is a C) making it possible to get a decent grade.

Pierre genuinely cares about students and will go out of his may to make sure they understand the class material. He manages to make a boring subject like dynamics a fun class to attend. He even has a good sense of humor about it all. He tells you exactly how to succeed if you listen. Great professor, highly recommend taking a class from him.
