PHYS 130
Physics for Engineers and Scientists A: Mechanics and Wave Motion
5*****
As rumor spreads, he is a cool lecturer that I have encountered. He will make sure that students understand physics conceptually, not just mathematically, and this makes the best of him. He often recites related engineering and historical issues in his lecture which make the lectures sound natural. He is absolutely nice and most of the time makes jokes. Also, he is type of person who is willing to spend office hours to get students along well with the materials (like 3 days per week). Students taking him definitely feel intimate in the classroom and in his office hours. Great personality! Now about academics, his philosophy is to fill up the gap between UC and community colleges, of course UC level is still higher. He went to community colleges after transferring to UC San Diego so he knows what students are doing in community colleges. He told that he had hard time in UC San Diego because the level being taught there generates big gap with community colleges. He overcame the difficulty and achieved PhD in Physics, and later worked 20 years working in particle physics field. He is the knowledgeable man to ask questions about physics and chemistry (he got chem B.S degree) in both theory and practice. Therefore, don't freak out if sometimes his exams are difficult at times. There is homework but he does not grade (students should do if don't want to fall behind). Quizzes are not hard because they are directly from homework problem and account for 20%. Exams are harder. 2 exams account for 20% per each. Final is designed not to finished, few students may finish but not 100% and that accounts for 30%. Lab is 10%.

Dr.Connor is a great teacher. I think some people may find his personality to be a bit abrasive but overall I thought his personality was just fine. I can see where some may get that idea but as a teacher he does his job and he does it well. He has a passion for physics, and science in general. He has degrees in both Physics and Chemistry(Ph.D in chem). He is very clear in lectures and his quizzes and tests relate to the problem sets he assigns. Do yourself a favour and DO THE WEEKLY PROBLEM SETS. You get a whole week. I would often save it to about 2 days before the quiz(which is always based on the PS for that week) and I found that to be plenty of time. Labs aren't a big deal and Connor doesn't treat them as such. They're 10 points, just make sure to pay attention to all of the small stuff like units in your results and that stuff. He curves your grade in the class so about an 82 is an A, 70 a B, etc.. Oh and go to his office hours. He's a huge help.

He really failed his job this semester, and the whole class was so messy. He always canceled classes with some kind of emergency. Dr. connor is a knowledgable professor, but he didn't organize his schedule well. several things i don't like: 1.he doesn't use(or even look at) the textbook, instead, he goes randomly with the materials. 2.he derives the equations during the whole lecture period without introducing the overall concepts(what is it about, why do we want to derive it, to prove what? .....) without all those, the derivations are just calculus and mathematics that make students get lost and bored. 3. he uses final 2 weeks to go over last 3 chapters... i don't think that's a good way of learning physics, because it's not sociology or psychology; and it's not about memorization but really thinking and geting the concept! it turns out the last 3 chapters took a huge percentage in the final. I really hate that. Despite that, he uses many good stuff, like webct , which makes every student get involved. if u want to ask questions, he will be very patient and detailed. please do contact him fisrt to ask whether he will get into tough situation again or not before signing up the class.......

If you have other options, take the other options. If the other options are full, try to late-add. If impossible to late-add, sorry you'll have to wait till the next semester. DO NOT TAKE HIM!! TAKING HIS CLASS IS MY BIGGEST MISTAKE OF THE YEAR! Yes he could be somehow the best physics lecturer in DVC. But his homeworks are hard. The questions on the quiz are from the homework or the previous exam, which make it between moderate and hard. And his exam....OMG, way harder than SUPER HARD...Even though he gave you the paper from last semester, it didn't help, coz the one you are going to have will be totally different from it. I've spent nearly all my time in his class and ended up with a B. Does it worth it? No, not a tiny piece.

He is a good teacher. I mean if you have a question and go ask him, then he does spend time with you to figure out the problem you don't understand. and he gives weekly quizes, so you need to review and study every single day to catch up the class. Those quizes are similar with homework problems, so you can get good marks if you do your homework, but for exam? i'm not sure. I can say I studied ONLY Physics sooooo hard last semester, and this was the only class I got C. I did every single homework, review every lecture and got over 90% for every quiz, but still I got C!!! Because his tests are EXTREMELY HARD !!!! I strongly recommand take other proffessors' class if you want to take physics 130.

Mr connor is in my opinion one of the best teachers at dvc. his lectures are clear and to the point, with an emphasis on basic conceptual understanding. his tests can be very difficult, but as long as you put in the time to understand the homework, you will be fine. Its a good idea to come to his office hours if you have any questions because he will take the time to explain everything to you. a major plus is that he will almost always curve the exams, as in 50% = c. If you have to take physics, you should definately take Mr. Connor because he is with out a doubt one of the best teachers at dvc, who is also very forgiving with your final grade.

Mr. Connor should only be taken by extremely talented physics students. He models his class using UC Berkeley standards and is very strict on grading tests and quizzes. He is a good lecturer and bright, yet can be short and rude when a question he thinks is trivial is posed. I left his office on many occasions discouraged and thinking myself ill-equipped and dim-witted; He was never encouraging and I sometimes felt belittled. OVERALL: I AM VERY DISSATISFIED WITH HIS PERFORMANCE AS A TEACHER AND WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TAKING HIM.

The truth is that Mr. Connor is a really nice guy; you'll really like him, until you are up at 3am trying to figure out how you paid total attention to the lecture and don't have a clue how to do the homework.. or the test. Since he has a rep for being a rough teacher, you also have to remember that the students chose him knowing this; they want to be challenged. If you want to be challenged and don't mind spending all weekend, and every last ounce of free time in the math lab studying physics, this is the class for you.

This guy is amazing. He is definitely the BEST teacher you have had and will ever have. His lectures are so well explained that not getting them is harder that getting them. His class is really fun and interesting; he makes sure the heavy material do not get boring. The class is tough but a lot of fun. If you plan to slack off through the class, he is not the guy. You need to study and be focused, but if you are, getting an A is not too hard. If you`re an engineering major, do yourself a huge favor and TAKE HIM!

THis guy is on crack. His lectures are good but his exams are the killers of killers. In 50 minutes, he expects you to complete a 6 page exam with 4 pages of them being derivatives. the derivatives in the exam are one of the hardest i have ever seen. FOr the final, Connor ganged raped us by giving us a 12 page final in which we had only 2 hours to complete. I only recomment this teacher because he can teach, however this guy needs to go easy on the test taking. Over half of the students in his class got D's.

Dr Connor is one of the better physics teachers that I have had at DVC. He is a hard professor and his homework and tests are some of the hardest I have ever had at DVC. Physics 230 is a very hard course but now I feel that I have leaned so much that I can solve almost any problem from that class. He is a very easy going professor will help you out if you are finding the calss difficult. The entire class is graded on a curve which makes it easier for most people to pass the class.

Dr. Connor is a very clever person. But his Exams are supper hard. He cancelled alot of lectures and labs. He expects alot out of you during the exam. Be prepared to see some problems on the exams that you've never seen before. He spends alot of time making up the exam. He explains good, and gives a good lecture. Sometimes he misses alot of lectures and then covers couple chapters in a very short time. I hate that. Other than that, he is an entertaining guy.

DC is an awesome teacher but the material is hard. He teaches classes for scientists and engineers for a reason. If you really want to be in a physics field, you will work HARD despite your teacher. If you want an easy A, change your major! Expect to read the chapters in the book and work hard in these classes. DC prepares you EXTREMELY well for any physics/engineering classes you may take in the future. I highly recommend him!

dr. connor will make a physicist out of you. best lectures. hard tests. great sense of humor. the reason why you he gives you problems like youve never seen before on tests is because this isnt some math class where the problems are from the hw and you already know how to do them but a science class where youre tested on how you apply principles youve learned and attack the problems.

This is one of the hardest class`s I`ve ever taken, but its supposed to be. If you want to cruise through a class don`t take this class. Dr. Connor is awsome he has a really great sense of humor, his teaching is great, he explains some tough material very clearly. If you want to be an Engineer this is a great class to get you prepared.

Dr. Connor is an excellent teacher! He gives very detailed lectures and a good variety of problems (in homework, quizzes, etc.). He does not teach like your typical community college professer because he expects you to think. If your plan is to B.S. your way through school change majors NOW!!

He explains stuff well. You will learn a lot of things that you are going to use in the future. Most of his lecture is to derive equations. Quiz and homework assignment is 15%, three exams are 45%, lab is 10%, and final exam is 30%. He often curves if students do tests badly.
