MATH 193

Analytic Geometry and Calculus II

I don't recommend Dr. Lam for students that are not good at math. He's really good for students that have a strong base because he skips a lot of steps. His lectures are not according to the book, so you'll be very confused when you're doing the homework. He gives out three tests but let's you correct one for extra points which is great. Gives 50 points for homework/in-class quizzes. the quizzes can be done in groups so it's really easy. BUT his lecture is only one hour for a two-day-a-week class, so he doesn't lecture on much material. Plan on going to the math lab. BUT his final is realllly easy. gives you a cheat sheet.

I don't know why but Dr. Lam made math very easy. I found it surprising that I would pick stuff up immediately during his lectures. The tests are completely based out of the homework questions. If you can do all of the homework questions, you should be able to get an A on the test. The only thing I didn't like was his lack of control for noisy students, there were plenty of them in class. However, it's well worth your while to take Dr. Lam. As an added bonus, he's very nice and approachable and makes funny comments.

Take this guy as your math teacher for any class! he is an awesome guy who actually knows his material really well, he jokes around and is friendly with anyone who comes to him for help. I had his class from 7-915 pm and he would many times stay late with students to help them out if they had any questions, his test will be simple if you go to class everyday and just pay attention to the lectures and take notes. his grading scale is tough where we had 3 tests (100 pts.) one final (150 pts.) and 50 pts for homework and classwork, which should be an easy 50 pts if you go to class evryday! his lectures are not boring at all, take him!

Finite mathematics with Lam is a pretty easy math class in my opinion. Most of the material is a review of stuff we have all learned in previous math classes--basic graphing, probability, etc. Lam is very nice and funny in a dorky way, and presents the material fairly clearly. He reviewed all of the last class's material at the beginning of each class, which was either quite helpful if you've missed class or very annoying if you were there and a review isn't necessary. Either way, between that and his little review quizzes at the end of class (to make sure we can actually do the problems), he clearly wants everyone to succeed and is willing to help. It sort of annoyed me when he'd make little calculating mistakes when doing examples on the board, and it even happened once on a test and he had to void the problem and give everyone free points, but hey who doesn't make mistakes?? All in all, if you're there as a business major just trying to fulfill a requirement, definitely take Lam!!

Calculus II is a hard topic to begin with, so rating his class hard is an unfair reflection of the difficulty of him as an instructor. If you have done the homework and understand each and every question then gettting an A in the class is not hard. But if you ignore doing hte homework until the last minute and don`t ACTIVELY ask for help from him or the mathlab on a homework problem when you dont understand it or miss it, then expect a B or a C. All in all he is a brilliant man. He got his undergraduate degree at MIT and his postbacc at Caltech. Hats off to you Dr. Lam. Bottom line, I got an A in his class because I attacked the homework and actively made sure I understood each problem, and more importantly understand WHY you missed a homework problem or didnt know how to approach it. Relative to other 193 instructors, his difficulty is moderate to easy. (but that is only relative).

I wish there were more professors like Mr. Lam at DVC. He is NOT "easy", and he doesn't teach you less or skip hard sections or anything. No, however you'll do SO MUCH BETTER than if you took the class with another teacher. Why? He has this friggin' MAGICAL way of explaining stuff that makes an awful lot of sense. That, and he's VERY well prepared. Extremely well prepared! On the first day of class you get a sheet of paper with every homework assignment and the date of the tests - I wish more teachers did that! Seriously though, professor Lam is a master at teaching you how to do math. A testament to how good a teacher he is - on the last day of class all but maybe 2 people that were enrolled on the first day were there to take the final. Have you ever seen a calc class with a retention rate like that?!

Dr. Lam is a great teacher. He's really funny in a dorky way, which is always entertaining. He knows excatly what he is talking about and if you ask a question you get a thourough and direct answer. His lectures are straight to the point and he only teaches what you need to know. His class is set up in the following way: the first half is lecture, then a 10 - 15 minute break, then he wraps up the lecture, then he gives a quiz. There is a quiz at the end of every class, but it's not what you think. The quiz is actually a problem from the homework that's more of a group effort with open book and open notes just to makes sure you understood the lecture. He gives 4 exams which are not too hard if you do the homework and take notes. Overall I think he's a great teacher and very patient.

Professor Lam is an awesome teacher. I took his class at night from 7 to 10 but he usually let us out around 8:30. The class consists of 550 points. 450 on 4 tests (final is 150 points)and 100 for HW and quizzes. The weekly quizzes are not real quizzes but are merely example problems from the book that you can do with a partner. He doesnt even grade the HW or Quizzes, if you complete them, you will receive full credit. The best part however is that Professor Lam gives practice tests the week prior to the exam that are extremely similiar to the actual tests. Definitely take Mr. Lam, go to class, and do the HW, and get an A.

While Mr. Lam knows material, he has trouble talking over students he cannot control in his class. He had one of the worst managed classes I've ever attended since the students would talk in groups while he was explaining concepts which made it impossible for some others to hear. Yes, he could speak Chinese, as did most of his students, but all the foreign language slowed the class down for others who spoke and learned in English. I dropped the class, since I take classes to get very good grades, and I don't have to put up with a poor learning environment or disrespect from an ethnic group.

Mr. Lam is a funny teacher. He is a a very bright man, and he knows all the calculus courses extremely well. His tests are difficult especially the word problems and the graph problems. He gives a quiz every time when there is a class meeting. If you want to take Lam you gota do the homework, otherwise you will be in trouble in the test. I definately recommond him if you want learn the logic of calculus. Altough it's kind of hard to get an A in his class .

Do yourself a favor and take Mr. Lam for math. At first, Mr. Lam will explain to you that his class is very hard, but trust me the class is softer than a baby's bottom; no, it's softer than that. Mr. Lam's class is as soft as... as a cottonball. He's not the most entertaining teacher, but honestly, what math teacher is? As long as you go to class, do your homework, and study somewhat you will pass Mr. Lam's class with flying colors!

Mr. Lam is a great teacher. He answers questions in a straight forward style. His tests are not that difficult if you do the homework. Homework is due the day of the test, he doesn't take attendance after the first few weeks and he tells you what to study before the test.
