Well, I have alot to say about Mr. Phalen... To start it off i want to admit i was one of those students who was terrified about taking this class. I knew from the first semester i have been at DVC that i was going to have to take it. Well i'm completing my 3rd year and last semester now. I waited til the last minute which was alittle scary, but i did it. I now wish i had taken this class earlier because it has been my all time favorite class! Mr. Phalen was once in my shoes.. he admits he was scared of taking speech the first time. So the fact that he knows how you feel and understands your afraid, he had figured out over the years techniques to helps students with their fears of public speaking. Others will tell you phalen is an awsome teacher but he gives too many speeches. He doesnt give TOO many.. but he gives more than any other teacher. There are about 7 speeches, 6 that are graded. I beleive that if i were to take another class with less speeches i wouldnt feel as confident as i do now of public speeking. Also, i noticed that none of my other classes are all the students in the class talking to each other, we all know each others names.. and we know things about them because we were given the oppurtunity to not only to talk to them, but feel comfortable in the class. So i would have to say i have learned alot this semester with Mr. Phalen. He has a passion for his teaching, and truely cares about his students. Hes getting up there in his age.. and is highly considering retiring... So dont wait like me till the last minute to take his class.. cause he might be gone. And you dont want to miss out on a great oppurtunity to be in his class, you will definately enjoy his presence. I know i did. This response isnt coming from an A student either.. so dont think his class is easy. Its not... but he makes it easy for you to challenge yourself... and thats the present in the end! Thanks Mr. Phalen!

Great teacher who did not force his own opinions upon the students, nor did content disagreements change the great students recieved. The most important factor in a speak class is comfortability, especially if somone is very shy. Mr. Phalen did a great job making ALL the students in our class very comfortable, and he also created an environment where all the classmates were respectfull of eachother. This class allowed me to get out my opinions, and develop my personality, not just my public speaking skills. Personally i am a Christian, and I have felt that many other teachers belittle Christianity, and mock my Faith, but I never felt that way in this class. I was able to give speeches which I truly felt strongly about, and perhaps it was the minority opinion, and I never felt persecuted; neither by the teacher or the students. There are many teachers who do not seem like they are cut out for either teacher, or for that specific class. Paul Phalen matches up with speech like a loving marriage, and he is a wealth of knowledge for the beginner and an encouragment to those who are experienced with public speaking. There are no suprises in Phalens class. If you want an A, he will work with you to keep you on the A track, likewise for any other grades. Also if you guys get the chance to sign up for Intermurals, SIGN UP. At first I did not want to sign up, and did not need the extra credit, but the event is great, and I got to learn a lot about my classmates who were there with me in the competition. At the competition, we competed with students from other teachers, and when people heard that I was from Phalens class, they were intimidated; HE'S THAT POLISHED! Whether you want to learn about public speaking, fullfill the CSU requirment, speak your opinions, or just make some friends, TAKE THIS CLASS, you will not be sorry!

For all you people out there with a fear in public speaking… Take Speech 120 with Paul Phalen! You won’t regret taking this class. I promise you this since I am one who has a fear in giving speeches as well, more so than many people I know. I took this class for primarily one reason: to overcome my fear of presenting speeches. It wasn’t the easiest of all subjects that I took this semester, but I must say that as I look back it wasn’t entirely all that hard. Given about 6 speeches, that range from 3-4min stands to 6-8min ones, I have to admit that the class was rather intimidating at first glance. There were countless times where I wished I could have dropped out of the class to avoid giving speeches, but I evaded giving into that thought because of two reasons: 1) it would have been the easy way out, and 2) if I had left, I would have had to start all over again. I’ve had this fear since I was young, and I can’t tell you how many times in the past teachers have misunderstood my fear as simply a ploy to get out of the assignment. Mr. Phalen has been one of the few teachers that have understood what it is like to go through a fear in speech giving, as he had gone through a similar fear himself. He really levels out with students in the class and crack jokes to liven the class or his lectures. He really makes the class a comfortable environment to come to. He is more than willing to help them with their speech assignments whether it be choosing a topic or giving you feedback to improve your next presentation. Mr. Phalen has helped me a lot in my speeches, and without his help, I would not have been able to control my nervousness in speech giving.

In the beginning of the semester I was quick to judge, I said that Mr. Phalen played favorites, but he doesn`t. He is so sincere, and allows extra credit. He is fun, energetic, and loves his job. You can see it in the way he teaches and how much he cares for his students. He wants everyone to do well, and he does forgive you if you miss classes. He will make a few jokes, but that`s what makes him Mr. Phalen. He encourges his students to do well, and participate in speech competitions. I did and I not only made it to the finals I placed in the top four. It`s not because I am a good speaker, it`s because of the confidence that he gave me and allowed me to be me. Our class bonded so well and I think it is truly because of the teacher. He is honest and considerate to all people. He truly loves his students. When I went on the stage for the finals he whispered to me that he was really proud of me. I have never had a teacher believe in me as much as he does. If you are a shy person or even outgoing person take his class. I can`t say enough good things about him. He will allow you to do a speech on anything you want. He has no limitations, which is great because he wants us to be honest with eachother. I can`t say how many personal stories I have heard about people, people whom I barely know but are willing to put themselves out there. It`s all because of him. If you want a good teacher, a good friend, and to come out of speech with confidence and a good frame of mind take him. You wont regret it.

Mr. Phalen is honestly a great teacher. He doesn't give you a grade, you earn them. He pushes you to do the best of your ability and thats what I really like about him. His class isn't easy if you don't do the work. He will challenge your thoughts and knowledge and see what you know. He is great about giving constructive criticism and not Destructive. He is very strict on being ON TIME to class, and trust me I've learned from that. You really don't want to miss class because you get to hear other peoples speeches and a lot of them are really interesting. If your the shy type, or really feel pressured speaking in front of an audience, this class is really for you. I promise you will become feel like a better person and you feel strong and confident about yourself in the end. He yelled at me a couple times but only when I deserved it. He's really a nice guy once you get to talk to him and he makes the most unique/weird jokes that you never heard of. He just says them and your like whaaat? did he say? But really if your thinking of taking Speech 120 take Mr. Paul Phalen you'll learn a lot from him and he even asks you if he's being hard on you or not, he wont take what you have to say about him personal at all. He's one of my favorite teachers at DVC and if he teaches the Critical Thinking class in fall of 06 i might just sign up for that class. So take Mr. Paul Phalen YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!

I took the Saturday class and really enjoyed it! I was absolutely terrified about taking this course. I had severe reservations about ever being able to get up in front of “strangers” and give a speech. However, Mr. Phalen is a fantastic teacher with an abundance of energy and a genuine passion for teaching---and for Speech in general. He is considerate and helpful if you have any questions or concerns about your speeches. He will offer you extra credit if you need it. We delivered about six different types of speeches--one introducing a classmate, one about ourselves, an informative, a persuasive, an impromptu, and our final speech was a mock interview. By the first major speech, I did not feel like I was talking to strangers any longer. I felt much more at ease and Phalen is very good at creating an atmosphere that is comfortable for everyone. We had one difficult test (study hard for this!) and the ability to take it again at the end of the semester if we needed to. Don’t take this class if you can’t attend each and every class—you cannot miss classes without it affecting your grade. However, he will give you the opportunity to make up class by attending another one of his classes on a different night. Overall, great class and a wonderful experience. On a side note, Phalen’s daughter is also a Speech teacher at DVC, is very nice and would also be a great teacher to take Speech from.

Understandable. He respects each students and understands anyone from their individual's asspect. To get an A in the class, do not talk in class. If you have a question ask him. READ THE SYLLABUS!!!! The syllabus is only three pages and if you read it and follow it you will get an A. After every speech, he write you some great comments and comments that will improve you for your next speech. Remember to go over your speech many times before you go to class. I wouldnt say the class was easy becasue it wasnt. You need to work hard, do well on your speeches, and participate well in the class. You need to show him that you have improved. Therefore, read his comments and not just the grade becasue it will do u alot better for your next speech. But if you would like to get a C in the class. Then, come to class late. Absenses and tardiness WILL EFFECT YOUR GRADE... ALOT. DO NOT GO OVER YOUR TIME LIMIT. which is on the SYLLABUS too. So, read it! His speech topics are great. HE is the type of teacher whom wants students to do well. If he sees you working hard but not an "A", he will give you extra credit or somehow to help you raise your grade. You could go to him after class or even before class. Just work hard and participate well in his class. My night class was awesome. Everyone got along, and he brings everyone together. I already miss the class.

Do you want an 'easy class'? There are other speech teachers who will assign you WAY fewer speeches. Do you want to have a blast and learn? Sign up for Phalen's class. Here's the scoop- you will do an intro speech, an instructional speech, a complaint speech, a pursuasive speech, some short impromptu responses, you'll review youself, take a midterm test, do a few short papers... Too hard? Take someone else. Want to become an excellent speaker and enjoy a class? Take Phalen. Public speaking is daunting for many. Mr. Phalen makes it easy to be comfortable. You are not competing against classmates, you only compete against yourself. Is english your second language? Thats OK, you will be supported and will be graded fairly, only by your imnprovement. I had more fun and learned more in this class than many other hard core academic classes. Our W nite class became a unit, and we supported each other, cheered each other and challenged each other. Speech is a transfer requirement for many. Good public speeking is a requirement for many jobs. This is an excellent class.

Mr. Phalen is one of the best instructors at DVC. I wish that there were more instructors like him. I never saw him play favorites, he was always fair to everyone. In his class you have to do 8 to 10 speeches. There is only one test, but if you don`t do well on it he allows you to make it up. He understands that people get nervous when they have to do speeches, and he makes you feel really comfortable. He provides a positive enviornment, and really brings the class together. He is strict on attendance, but he made that clear the first day and in his syllabus. Bascially if you work hard in this class and show that you are putting some effort into your speeches you will get the grade you deserve, and if you also show him that you are working on the areas where you need to improve. If you are shy and get nervous, take his class! He really boosts your confidence and he is easy to talk to. I dreaded the thought of taking a speech class, but when I took his class I couldn`t wait to go, his classes are also fun. Take his class or you will regret it.

The only thing Mr. Phalen hates are when you miss his class, or consistently late. Those who wrote bad reviews were obviously the ones who were slackers and came in late, or missed classes. It's rude, irresponsible, and shows lack of committment on your part for being a good student- especially in a speech class, when others are nervous enough about giving speeches- they don't need to have someone walk in in the middle of their speech. I like how he made this clear the first time you came to class- too bad those who came in "late" missed his "on-time" speech, and were surprised that their lack of attendance or abundant tardiness got them bad grades. He's easy to work with if you have a valid excuse, but he doesn't like those who think they can just show up last minute and get an A. I loved this guy- he's the best. I've taken 2 speech classes, and his class is definitely is the icing on the cake. I hate talking in public, but with his critiques, I improved drastically. Great Class!!!

The perfect man for the job. He is a man who is devoted to teaching, knows it inside out, but still remains passionate. Despite this he is not over zealous and understands that not everyone is going to be the next Tony Blair, or John F. Kennedy. Instead he gives honest criticism, encouraging praise and helpful support. He isn`t a praise whore, but insists that you treat your fellow students with respect. This means being attentive during speeches, having honest feedback, and attending class on time. If you miss a class he will be happy to let you sit in on another class to make it up, this leads me up to his one unyielding requirement. Take the class seriously. This doesn`t mean devote your life to it but show up, give 5 or 6 speeches with an outline and in the timeframe, be reasonably polite to others and and you will get an A. But be a slack and you will get the grade you deserve.

I LOVE PHALEN!!!! He is wonderful and funny and very encouraging. He really cares about his students. Hurry and sign up before his classes are filled... he is a great instuctor. Only one test, and it is very easy and straightforward. The material is all taken from the book which is very easy to read. You need to turn in an outline for every speech, and there are a couple of short, simple papers. Even if you're nervous about speaking, your class will become a community of support, and soon speaking in front of others will not be as scary as you think. Just do your best and speak about something you are passionate about. Also make sure to be on time for class and participate/ask questions. Don't worry if you're shy, you will feel much more comfortable speaking when you take this class with Mr. Phalen!

Most people are scared to death of giving speeches like I was. I am still nerve racked by them but he made the best of a speech giving situation. He is very supportive and understanding if you have a problem with a due date. His topics give you lots of room for personal expression, and are great for progressing. He does give a lot of speeches but trust me it is alot better to have a teacher who gives you alot of speeches so you can get better and practice, than one who only gives you 3 or 4 and those weigh out your whole grade. If you bomb one of those your whole grade goes down. Mr. Phalen gives about 8-9 speeched so you have many chances to do well and get better. He also offers extra-credit. Take him, I know many people who love him and would say the same as me! He`s GREAT!

I wouldn`t say he is the easiest instructor on campus, but i can say he is the fairest of them all. Out of all classes taken at DVC during my two year teniorship, I enjoyed his the most because I learned the most. I hated speech and he gave me the tools to help me love speech. His speeches require some work out of class, so be prepared to spend approx 60-120 min for preparation. Other speeches require more time. He requires you to tape a couple. He also requires you to go to a speech night event in which you critique several speech night performers. He heavily bases his grade on your review of them. IF YOU PUT TIME INTO HIS CLASS, YOU WILL FIND IT WILL BE A VERY PRODUCTIVE USE OF YOUR TIME AND IN THE END YOU WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED IN REAL LIFE.

PHALEN IS A VERY HARD, TOUGH AND MEAN TEACHER! That's just to make him happy, since he feels people are too easy on him on this site. Truth is, Phalen is one of the coolest teachers on campus and the best speech teacher at DVC. I hated public speaking and still do, but Phalen made it less painful and fun at times. He pushes you to evaluate yourself while he evaluates you and there is a lot of self-teaching involved. He'll try to be scary the first day, but just tough it out the end and you'll do fine. There is 6 speeches, 5 of which are graded, 1 final (a surprise), 1 test, two self-evaluations, and 1 critical essay. The class gets very close as the semester goes on and you'll make lots of friends just through giving speeches.

Mr. Phalen is one of the best teachers and people i know. He is very understanding, a fair and detailed grader, and is willing to help you at any time if your willing to help yourself. You give 5 speeches, i wish we had more. You have every opportunity to get an A grade. so take this class dont be a slaker like me and we`ll both get A`s!!! go DVC basketball!!!

I was terrified of taking a Speech class as being the center of attention is never a desirable situation for me to be in. In fact, giving speeches has always been my worst nightmare. On the first day of Speech 120 with Professor Phalen, I was as nervous and anxious as I could be. However, I immediately felt a sense of relief because of the openness of his spirit, his desire to encourage his students, and his ability to allow his students to express themselves. I feel that I was able to get through this class with a sense of accomplishment and personal growth. The reason I was able to do this is that I sensed that Professor Phalen genuinely cares about his students and in seeing them live up to their full potential.

Mr. Phalen is a very good guy. He is understanding and he provides a friendly atmosphere for the class. Also, he made me realize how important honesty is and in doing so, the classmates were real. He cracks some jokes that are not so funny and some that are pretty funny but hey at least he tries to ease everyone up. I mean speech class is not the most desirable course for a lot of people because we get nervous. Luckily, Mr. Phalen is a kind and friendly teacher who helps every student to become a better public speaker. I suggest everyone to take this course because besides learning class material, you also learn some significant moral themes that assist you in becoming a better person.

Phalen was 100% my favorite teacher last semester. I was terrified about having to take speech my first semester in college... I hadn't done any public speaking all through high school and I expected the worst. Turns out everyone else in the class felt the same way.... he made the class feel really comfortable starting on the first day. He's a major goof, but gets serious when it's needed. He grades fairly and does give extra credit if needed. Throughout the semester you get to know everyone in the class really well and you feel really comfortable speaking in front of them. All in all his class was really fun and i especially recommend this class if Speech is intimidating to you.

Mr. Phalen is an unfair teacher; he plays favorites and does not grade you on the quality of your speech, but on how much you might have to kiss butt. I missed two classes because I had the flu AND I had a doctor`s note to prove it, but he still dropped my speech grade from an A to a C, which lowered my overall grade in his class from an A to a B. This was all because I wasn`t present on the day the speech was assigned to me. I went to two of his other speech classes and tried to make up extra credit to bring up my grade, none of it helped. I honestly deserved an A in that class, but I guess if you get sick, you won`t have a chance...THANX PAUL!
