Fundamentals of Speech

To start this off, Steve Storer is by far one of the greatest professors I have ever had at DVC. He may come off stern at first but in a couple days time you'll find that he makes the class fun and enjoyable with his sense of humor regardless that it's a speech class. Now note that I did mark him as 'very easy,' and I say this with full honesty, as long as you follow his rules: Be there on time, and Do Your Work, the work can be as simple as reading a couple chapters out of the book or merely preparing for your upcoming speech. Steve recognizes and rewards improvement and creates an environment where constructive criticism takes place from both him and your peers. He gives you a topic for your speeches but you ultimately get to choose what YOU want to talk about within that topic which really makes things alot easier when talking in front of people. By the last couple of weeks in his class you'll wonder why you were ever afraid to speak in front of a group of people. Final Note: Take Steve Storer for Speech. Follow his basic rules of arriving on time and doing your work but most importantly have fun with it! Good Luck!

I remember my first day of class like it was yesterday. We all sat down and waited for the class to begin, and as soon as it did our teacher told us what not to do in his class. He told us how we couldn't come in if we were more than five minutes late, and how we couldn't miss more than three classes without being dropped. Immediately everyone in the class gasped in fear of failing. However, we all adjusted accordingly and had an excellent time throughout the summer semester. Although the class had strict rules, I did learn a lot about being on time in the real business world. I remember being six minutes late for the midterm and not being able to take it that day. At first I was upset, but later I accepted that it was my fault for getting up early. After that day I showed the teacher that missing one test wouldn't hold me back from doing my best. Overall, I really learned a lot from that class, and met some new friends too. The material was interesting, and the support from my fellow students was incouraging. I reccomend Prof. Storer for everyone taking Speech 120

Prof. Storer is a supportive, intelligent teacher who has good control over his group. I highly recommend him. He is able to bring out the best in the group. You will learn, and you will become a more confident speaker. I gave him an A- because I think he leaves out one important part of public speaking. Because we are "just" students and this is "just" school, he does not teach his students how to make a professional appearance. There is no comment from him for a student with a hat nearly covering his eyes, pants sagging past the buttocks, or an oversize T-shirt with distracting images or slogans. I think it would be helpful for the students to be told that they must "play the game" of presenting themselves in a way that enhances the audience's reception of that speaker. In spite of this, several students dressed in a way that coordinated with their speeches. I think they merited recognition, and maybe a couple more points for their effort. All in all, Prof. Storer is a good teacher and you will not be sorry you enrolled in his class.

Funny

Helpful
Cons: Strict

Difficult Tests
Storer is my favorite teacher at DVC so far. He is very personable and jokes with his students to keep the class fun and make everyone comfortable. This class should be fairly easy as long as you follow his rules. He is strict and enforces the rules he puts in place. All his rules are for good reasons though, and are set in place to create a respectful, positive atmosphere for the speakers. At the end of every speech he will critique it and give you immediate feedback. In this it does not feel as if you are on the hot seat at all. Storer always finds something that he likes with your speech and then will give constructive criticism to make you a better speaker. As far as exams, he is challenging if you do not study. But if you stay up with the reading and actually know the text then you will be fine. In the end, if you abide by his rules and put in the effort, this class will be enjoyable and very helpful.

I took his class over the summer... which I think is the best way to take speech, having it for a whole semester would be way too long for me... On the first day he "seemed" very intimidating (which made a few students drop the class)... but as the weeks went on he became a big softy and a fun teacher to have... his test are fair... study and you get a good grade, don't study and you probably won't get the grade you want... his grading of speeches are good... fair between students. He tells you exactly what he wants from you in your speech, so you are not just guess or b-essing your speech and embarrassing yourself in front of the class. It is all covered before you start writing your speech and he makes sure you understand the guidelines as well... I would recommended taking speech from him you will enjoy his class... I did!!!

Steve Storer is the best speech teacher!!! I took speech 120 in the fall semester of 2004 and I dropped it. That teacher was too hard. I already don't like to speak in front of the whole class anyway, but for requirements, of course you all know, speech has to be taken. I randomly took Storer's class and it was the best I could have gotten. He's funny, he lets us out early, it was a 4-6:50 class and there were only 2 tests and 3 major speeches. He gives good advice if you bomb a speech, he'll just let you know what he's looking for next time; it's not an easy A, you have to really show improvement on each speech, but he helps by letting you know what to do for the next speech and he just naturally makes you want to come to class. I can't say enough about what a good teacher he is. Take his class for sure.

Okay, let's face it for most people speech is a very difficult class; it was that way for me in the beginning. Steve has a way of making each student comfortable and confident. All of his comments are very helpful. He wants his students to suceed and I learned so much this semester because of him. Hey at the Speech Tournament this semester our class took three places including first; there is no way we could have done it without Steve. He's the best and if you want to actually improve confidence, self-esteem, and know how to properly perform an educated speech, TAKE HIS CLASS! His class pace started very consistent in the beginning then slowly decreased throughout the semester; which was extemely helpful around Finals. His jokes are an added bonus. Steve I'll really miss seeing you twice a week.

Mr. Storer is by far one of the best teachers on campus. i have recommended SO MANY of my friends to take his class when they think of taking speech 120, and they all came back telling me they loved it. he makes the class envirement VERY fun, relax, easy to learn and give speeches in. many people who are scared at first of giving speech later in the class have no problem giving speeches because of the environment he makes in the class room. hes a funny, very fair teacher. and not only is it a fun class, u really do learn a lot in that class about giving speeches, and you can ABSOLUTELY take wut uve learned and apply it outside the classroom. If i were to take any other speech classes i would take it with him for sure!! if your gonna take speech 120, MAKE SURE U TAKE IT WITH STORER!! :)

I honestly put off speech till the end of my DVC career because i did not want to take it, ive seen other speech classes where students were giving presentations and being recorded and it was intimidating. The first day of class Storer seemed a little intimidating but that soon changed. He is a very funny down to earth guy and makes the class alot of fun. I really enjoyed his class and his sense of humor. everyone in the class became very good friends and we have really came along way from the first speech. I highly recommend him to anyone who was like me and didnt want to take a speech class. Also, BUY the book, ive read alot of comments that say dont buy it but you need it to study for the tests.

Mr. Storer is an awsome teacher. At first I thought he was going to be a hard teacher but towards the middle of the semester he is a really cool guy. He jokes around a lot but still is pretty strict when it comes to coming to class ON TIME!!!! If you are late to class then you might as well not come because he won't let you. But if you talk to him he is understanding and cool. If you really want to learn how to speak infront of an audience I recommend Mr. Storer because he makes you feel important in the class and he helps you improve. He is the best speech teacher i've ever taken. If you don't take him for speech then you'll regret it!!!!!

He may seem scary at first, but he's just a big old teddy bear! It's funny watching this big old guy who looks, acts and talks like a football coach teach a speech class...He's absolutely great, and anyone who has taken his class will say the same. He's one of those teachers that you learn to like on a personal level, maybe visiting the next semester to say hi. There's no way you can't get an "A" in this class with the least bit of effort. The quizes were tough, I failed or got a "D" on all three and got an "A" in the class. He is very strict on attendance and being on time, do not walk into this class late because he will front you off!

Mr. Storer's class is very enjoyable. He will ask you to be on time and follow guidelines for the speeches. The guidelines are not rocket science. Once you get them and practice your speeches so you meet time you will have an excellent output. The book gets a share of attention only for tests which do no count as much as the speeches for grading. However, Mr. Storer will give guides for you to study that will pretty much get you everything answered for test day. Overall, with this class you will learn, have fun and yes, work when you have your speech coming but at the end you will be happy with the teacher and the grade.

First off let me start by saying that if you truley want to improve your speech and communication skills, this is the class for you. However, it will take some work and dedication. Mr. Storer is by far my favorite teacher at DVC. I took his speech class last Fall semester and i can proudly say that i have learned something valuable from his class. He is picky about absents so be in class and ON TIME. Mr. Storer drops you after the second or third absence. Overall, really good teacher, understanding and he is there to help you. Take this class if you want IMPROVEMENT and fun.

Mr. Storer's class is fun to be in and I can honestly say its one of the only classes where I have actually learned something that may prove useful later in life. The guy is totally down to earth and hella easy to talk to. He is always cool except for one people slack off or make jokes in class, he'll get pretty mad. But thats all good because he makes sure no one will give you a hard time when you are speaking. If you are willing to do moderate work and simply make an effort to speak like he teaches you its not hard to succeed in his class. He is a good teacher, take him.

I am a very shy person and I abhored the fact that I needed to take speech class to get into a csu. I've always been nervous giving speeches and I didn't see how in the hell this class would make any difference for me, but it did. For the first time in my life, I was able to give speeches without feeling a hint of nervousness while taking this class. Mr. Storer understands that students are nervous about speeches, so he will teach you how to make a presentable speech by controlling your anxiety. I was so thankful to have a teacher like him. Take his class!

Here is the ultimate Role-Model, the Greatest Speech teacher ever. Steve is so awesome I took his short-term speech 120 class this past spring and I loved it so much. Steve is so laid back and he gives you one heck of a fun time. If you are scared to take a speech class Steve is the man for you. It's like he can remove all of the fear out of your system and replace it with confidence and his class is never boring and is always cracking jokes. In the most honest truth, Mr. Storer is one of the most motivated professors I have come across to date, including my two previous years experience at a CSU. He is not personable, but extremely passionate about his job. His humerous style allows the class to really gel together nicely which is usually the most difficult aspect a class seems to aquire. I always felt welcome and was ALWAYS treated with a positive approach even when constructive criticism was given. This man should be a role model for other teachers to follow. I would recommend his class.

Steve is so terrific. I never enjoyed a class more than his. I looked forward to attending every monday and wednesday and the time went by quickly except when I had to give my speeches. about 7 in all. Not one for public speaking I became a little more relaxed and capable of giving a speech and even an impromptu speech at that. I loved his class and think that he is the best teacher at DVC. Take his class if you need to take a speech class. I look forward to taking another class with him if it is offered.

He's a great teacher. The best I've had at DVC. He is strict on attendance, but it is fun and worth coming to class. There are only a couple of test, but the questions come from the text book and in class assignments. He ineracts and communicates clear so you can absorb the information. There are a few speeches you have to present, but it's no big deal. I hated public speaking before his class and after taking it I enjoy it and have a lot more confidence speaking in front of strangers.
