HIST 285 - Technology in Historical Perspective
Interesting class, but I would take it with a light credit load, otherwise you might not have the patience to do the work for this class, which if you have half a brain, you should be able to get an A in.
Pros: Loves his class.
Responsive to student comments
Cons: Rough grader

Pros: It is obvious he reads directly from the book or readings he assigns. So it's easy enough to follow along in class. Readings are informative, however, once you've studied the history of one country's industrialization history you've pretty much read them all. He runs the subject INTO THE GROUND.
Cons: If he didn't have to book, he'd be a fish out of water. Stupid assignments about a subject no one cares about. Completely and utterly boring. I had to take a caffeine pill or drink a Monster before each class in order to stay awake.

HIST 231
US Military History II (since 1900)
1*
Pros: There is no such thing as a pro for this guy
Cons: He is terrible at giving lectures. During his lectures, he jumps from topic to topic and often going back to other topics because he forgot information. He uses no notes basically. He still uses an overhead projector to show his points of his lecture. Those points are useless and a minimal. He talks so much more than what students have for visual ad. He is the worst professor I have had by far. Do not take him. He EVEN says he just assumes that everyone is in his class because they are interested in the topic. He doesn't take into considerations that there may be student who might have been forced to take it as an elective or something. When he talks, he mixes up a lot of information therefore students have to correct their notes often. All you can do is write down what he says and hope you heard it right. Most of the time when you go back and look at your notes, you realize how messy it is and how it goes back and forth from topic to topic making it so much harder to study from. Also this guy gives out a study sheet for each unit, but because he is terrible at giving lectures, the notes you have taken in class can't even answer half the questions in the guide. I would give him 0 stars but that's not possible. I personally am a good student, I do my share of the work and earn my grades. I have had my shares of hard teachers and easy teachers, but this guy is just the worst of all.

HIST 203
United States History since 1900
2**
Pros: Quizzes are extremely easy and the midterm is a take-home essay (only 6 pages or so)
Cons: Final covers a lot of material which is kind of annoying

The class is really boring

Cellphone/Attendance nazi

This class is really, really easy. I more or less just skipped all the classes besides the ones where there were quizzes (and you're allowed to miss 2 of the 10 quizzes anyway). I think this class is really easy to get at least a B+/A-. I kind of skimmed the textbook readings before class for the quizzes and usually got a perfect score. There's no in-depth coverage of history or anything like that...everything is pretty much general US history knowledge that you should probably know anyway (ie. When did WWII start? What offensive ended the Vietnam war?)

But the class itself is pretty boring. He should have been a high school history teacher instead of a college one since he actually cares about you using cellphones or coming in a couple seconds late, etc.

I haven't taken a test from him yet, but can I just tell you the class is enough to put you in a coma; it's so boring. He's not excited about the material, he barely even knows it himself. If you ask him a question that doesn't come directly from the textbook or his notes, he has no answer. He is easily distracted, especially by late comers. He is a cell phone nazi and you feel like your in 10th grade again. You're required to read a ridiculous amount of reading, which he doesn't even cover all of. His study guides give you about 10 topics to study, but you're actually supposed to know EVERYTHING, so he told us wednesday before the midterm on friday. If you hate history, you'll hate it even more after this class. If you like history, you'd be better off not to come to class and just read from the book.

Only positive: you can skip all the time and miss essentially nothing.

Pros: You don' have to use the text book, don't even buy or rent the book. He gives out unit guides to study and learn the terms.
Cons: Can't miss a class.
Easy A, if you show up to every class and take notes. All you need is notes. Don;t buy the text book or read it's a waste of time. Again just write notes. He gives 2 midterms and a final. Make sure to do the Syllabus Quiz in the first week of class, that is 5 points on the overall grade. His test are multiple choice, 30 - 45 questions. Personally i never went to class because i had my roommate's notes, i just read his notes, took the midterms and finals, and got an A for the class.

Pros: He seems to generally care about his students, I mean if you have a problem he tries to help.
Cons: He is extremely boring and uses a projector with transparencies. Also, his policies are very strict for no reason.
I hated the class. I think if he would present the info in another way it would be easier. He doesn't give much info about whats going to be on a test. But listening to him talk was torture. I usually fell asleep.

A lot of people are saying they loved history before taking this professor- if you loved history, how did you not do well in the class? I did not go to a single lecture, or read a single page in the book, and managed to get a B in the class - the tests are extremely easy, and the material is from possibly 10th or 11th grade history.

That said: I'm taking him for a different history class now, not a big lecture hall, and yes, his attendance policy is awful. He treats the class likes its a high school class, meaning he'll get all uppity about seeing someone use a cell phone, being on time, forcing readings. Once again, its a very basic understanding of history that he's teaching, not in depth at all which is unfortunate, and anyone who went through high school should not need to actually do any of this reading - but you have to in order to do well on the reading quizzes.

He seems to have a limited knowledge of history, unlike other PhD's in Drexel's history department, and the classes are uninteresting, and would be better served with more time for class discussion.

Pros: This was seriously the easiest class I've taken. Just come to class, take some notes, and you'll be fine.

He is generally nice, especially if you come in for office hours.

He is very open for questions at any point in the lecture
Cons: He can be boring and is not a good public speaker. He gets distracted very easily and sometimes stumbles over his words.

He HATES cell phones. Make sure yours is on vibrate.
This class consisted of two exams and then a final. Seriously, if you don't do well on the exams, you probably didn't go to high school. They are that easy. They are fill in the bank and multiple choice.

I wouldn't bother buying the textbook, but instead use the copy in library when you study for the exams. You'll save yourself some money as most people don't read the book.

Pros: Information is not hard

Lenient grader if you go meet with him
Cons: Boring, dry speaker
Although his lectures are boring, the information is not difficult to understand if you just pay attention. The unit guides (his version of study guides) really do cover everything on the tests, it just takes a little time to find some terms in the book that he didnt mention in class because the info is spread out, otherwise easy stuff.

Sometimes gives back points if he thinks a question was unfair. Very straight forward questions & overall class

Pros: The material is easy
Cons: He thinks he's teaching a high school class. He gives little pop quiz things, he glares at people who who 30 seconds late, he is a cell phone nazi and may even come look at your laptop to make sure you're actually taking notes. He stumbles through his lecture everyday and he still uses overheads and the vcr. So basically he thinks he's teaching a high school class in 1985. Hated him, but actually did well in the class
I don't think I would ever take him again.

To be honest, this professor was one of the worst I've had. He doesn't make an effort to help students who ask for it. I once asked him if he would consider putting some notes online or if he didn't want to I would do it for him. All he said was, "No, I don't think so." Because the book and his lecture were so boring, it was almost impossible to pay attention. As a student with a 3.71 GPA, I was failing the course and had to withdraw. Don't even consider taking him.

Johnson talks in segments. His thoughts disconnected and not well delivered, you can tell he is improvising on the spot. Yes he probably knows a lot of stuff, but not much of it is interesting.

His grading is very rough, crossed off a whole page of my paper because I was "getting ahead of the class". Yes you get points taken off for having extra insights on the topic.

Horrible teacher. I'd not take him again.

I'm a senior and I took his class just for fun, bad idea. I have never done so poorly in a class. Like everyone said he makes his exams/quizzes SO unfair and hard. He doesn't take into consideration people who don't do well on exams. Then he makes you come to office hours and just sits there and says nothing but "Change your study habits". Absolutely the WORST professor at Drexel University.

Pros: Goes through entire chapter and main points in class so you dont really miss anything.
Cons: BORING!

Does not care if you did poor on the first exam but really well on the next two- doesnt curve at all. So if you did bad on the first exam switch out or it will bring your final grade very low.
