BIO 218 - Principles of Molecular Biology
His class is boring. Way too many things to study. Take this class only if all your other classes are easy and those teachers do not give you too many assignments.
Pros: Tests are based off slideshows.
Student-teacher interaction.
Cons: Tests are considered hard only because there's WAY too much to study for.
Boring class.

This is the first review I was anticipating to write. Where to start? Dr.Saunders is the type of teacher who inspires you to learn more than what is covered in class and pushes you to study harder for reason other than doing well on exams. He takes this course, which is the FOUNDATION of modern biology, and makes it as simple as one can. The class isnt "hard" like a calculus, it is however, a MOMENTOUS amount of info that is equally important. I studied more for this 3credic course than my 6c courses. As much as I studied, I still wish I had more time to dedicate to learning the material.

I assure you will get an A if you do the following:

Read the chapter before every class to insure you make the "connections" in lecture

Review his lecture slides once a week

outline every chapter, so you dont have to reread for the final and midterm.

DONT fall behind, you won't catch up

Dr. Saunders...thank you

This is guy is a freaking genius. His class is difficult, but he remains very fair and balanced all the way thru the course. His lectures are always interesting, and he is always very amiable. I wish all the biology department teachers were this good

Dr. Saunders as a human being is a great professor. He accepted the blame for the poor grades on the exam and told us to work harder..he then alotted us the opportunity to get back 50% of the points lost, which got you from an F to a C, this was nice.

His teaching methids were a bit crude or at the very least unstylized, he pretty muc read the slides to us an dhad to rush, he admitted he was cramming 15 weeks worth of material into the 10 week Drexel schedule- I can tblame him for any flaws in his teaching directly, given it wa shis first term, and that it was winter tiem with missed school days and he was being told by the dept what to do.

He gave us a take home final which somehow i bombed very badly...but I still got a B for the course. Presumably with a boost of extra studying it was an A course.

as a side note- he always answers his email and is polite about things, which I feel significantly improves the teacher/student dialogue when you need help with something. His attitude and style seems contradictory to some of my other experiences in the bio dept- thumbs up.

Pros: He is the only professor I've had that walks up and down the isles of a 200 person lecture hall. He hands his laser pointer out and wants students to explain what they see on his slides.

He's fun, and extremely helpful. He doesn't mind you dropping into his office any time to ask a quick question
Cons: The material is insanely intricate. Take good notes. Read the book.

The TA's are atrocious. They don't know the material any more than you do. The quizzes are worth about 30% of your grade, and are given every week. The material is written by different people. So Dr. Saunders may have used one term for a concept, and it will be called something different on the quiz. So read the book
There are too many different people involved in this class. If it were just Dr. Saunders, it would have been a fair class. There was obviously little communication between the 2 professors, and the TA's. No the average quiz grades are about a 50%. So don't freak out if you bomb your quizzes. Just go and ask. He's a fair grader

Great teacher. He doesn't curve (1st test self correction) but the tests come straight from the lecture slides and the homeworks. There is a lot of work but that also translates to lots of grades and opportunities to really master the material. The labs are very difficult, its a good idea to keep up as you go along. Study just as he tells you and you will ace the course. Lecture slides, read the text before class, do the study guides, and homeworks. Be warey of the contradictions/ mistakes in the hw, slides and tests, and ask questions when you have them. Its worth the work for a 5.5 credit course. Hes a great teacher who is very available, will answer questions and tries to take the time to learn your name. Great teacher and great course!

Pros: He records his lectures

His powerpoints and lectures are helpful

He cares that we learn in his class
Cons: Difficult class
Great guy!

You need to know a lot of detail and also know the processes/concepts.

It was a very difficult class, but he provides a back exam (no answers, I understand that he wants us to find the answer, but it honestly just adds unnecessary time to our studying) and uses a few of the quiz questions on the exam.

The weekly quizzes helped me keep up with my studying, but brought my grade down.

I like the idea of shifting to online quizzes, but they need to be at the end of recitation. If they're at the beginning, the recitation teacher hasn't had time to go over any of the material.

Great guy. this man knows his stuff, truly cares about his students. His one tragic flaw is his inexperience in teaching. The curriculum for the course was cramped and he had little maneuvering room; in the end he tried his best to give us a fair shot at good grades after we bombed the midterm. Unlike most professors at thsi school, he accepted part of the blame for the lwo scores, but claimed we still needed to work hard....its a fair trade :)

this professor is a great guy- just keep up with the readings and ask questions!!!

Pros: Dr. Saunders is by far the best biology professor in Drexel University. He takes his time to explain core concepts to his students and associates it with real-life situations.

Initially, I was afraid to take Dr. Saunders for Bio 218 because I heard rumors that his courses were difficult. However, through my own experience, I managed to get an A in the course. His style of teaching is superb. His exams are all lecture-based, so attend lecture.

Be sure to devote a lot of time to this class to pull an A!

He is a very caring professor. Even though his class is difficult due to the amount of material covered, I still enjoyed it. I feel that Saunders thought the material very well and was extremely easy to approach if you had difficulty in his class and needed help. His weekly hw, quizzes, midterm, and final are detail oriented, so make sure you study in advance. Some of the questions for the quizzes and tests were directly from the hw, so make sure you review them!

Professor Saunders is a really good teacher. His quizzes and homework are much easier than his exams, so if you're doing well in those, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll ace the exams. For the exams, MEMORIZE his lecture slides and homework questions (not the answers..just the question topics). He does expect you to know a lot of detail so that's why it's important for you to make sure you memorize all the details and specifics that he teaches.

dr saunders was a good teacher and a nice person, i didnt always go to lecture because he always posted slides and he pretty read off of them. He assigns a lot of work but the tests are right off the hw and the cd in the textbook is really helpful. I pulled a B. Besides the first test where he allowed us to make up half the points we lost because everyone did so badly, he doesnt curve. But with enough studying its not impossible.

Honestly speaking,I thought I was going to go crazy because of the workload. However, the 75% of the stress comes from trying to complete the labs in a timely fashion. The tests were difficult and I only barely passed with C's on the first midterm (only because of test corrections) and the final, but I got a B because I worked my ass off in lab. So, if you want to excel, ace those labs and study hard for those tests!

Pros: One midterm and weekly exams allow you to keep you grade in check as you go along.
Cons: Exams are incredibly hard and you must know every minute detail in the chapters. Be prepared to be asked the size of a genome or which chromosome a gene is located on. VERY DETAIL SPECIFIC, like any other bio class
Stay on top of your reading and re-read his lectures slides before weekly quizzes and you'll do fine. DO NOT fall behind

Pros: He's a very good professor, i just wish he was easier. I learned so much and truly enjoyed the material. He made lecture worth going to.
Cons: This is the hardest class i've taken yet as a bio major (although i'm sure it will get harder). He has very difficult fill in the blank exams, and his quizzes are hard as well. studied for this class every night, but it was a class i didn't mind studying for.

Pros: He is an okay lecturer
Cons: The exam and quizes for this class were ridiculous!! There is only one midterm and quizes every week which make this 4 point credit class even more stressful. The exams are in a short answer and multiple choice style. The midterm was a lot harder on the final which was actually fair. Definetely stay on your game for this class but don't expect this to be an easy A.

He's very smart and does alright teaching in lecture, but overall things were pretty disorganized from their end. Poorly worded questions and answers, questions with no correct answers, incorrect grading sheets - in the end it all worked out, but not very enjoyable. Weekly quizzes may have helped you stay on top of the material, but dang it got annoying quick.

Pros: he gives a lot of material to succeed in the course. records lectures, puts slides online and uses youtube videos to get point across
Cons: test questions are fill in mostly and can be very vague.
overall the course takes a lot of work and is time consuming but succeeding is plausible if the time is put in

Dr. Saunders was a very accesible and caring professor. The workload made this class extremely stressful. He went through the slides too quickly so it was hard to understand the material. Get ready to work your ass off if you take this class!
