CEM 151 - General and Descriptive Chemistry Description: In this non-mathematical course, we emphasize conceptual and descriptive chemistry. We first review atomic structure and examine in detail some of the properties of the outermost electrons on the atom, the valence electrons, because these determine the chemical properties of the atom. These electrons may be either transferred to other atoms that attract the electrons more strongly (forming ionic bonds), or may be shared with electrons on other atoms (forming covalent bonds). We note that shared electrons may have directional characteristics that we strive both to explain and predict. We first examine the behavior of representative s- and p-block (main group) elements. We then examine the rich (complicated) coordination chemistry of the d- block (transition) metals and end the course with discussions on "modern materials."
