PRINCIPLES OF HYDROGEOLOGY

Laboratory: Using Permeameters to Measure K Dr. Sanders
Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to determine the hydraulic conductivity (K),
which is similar to permeability, of sediment samples using constant head and falling
head permeameters.
Apparatus: The permeameters have been set up in the lab for you already. Some are set
up as constant head permeameters, and some are set up as falling head permeameters.
Before proceeding, be sure you can tell the difference (if you’re uncertain, look at the
diagrams in your textbook and compare them to what you see in the lab).
Procedure: In today’s lab you will test three sediment samples. Make sure you use at
least one constant head and at least one falling head permeameter. Step by step
instructions are given. Follow these steps and record your observations on the data
collection forms (attached). Calculate K for each sample and record it on the data form.
