Week 13: Nov. 18 Carolingian and Ottonian Art Reading: H&F, pp. 336-344 and 368-374 Required Works: Palantine Chapel (7.66) of Charlemagne, Aachen [descriptive title} 792-805 [date} Carolingian Art [period} Thus it was S Vitale in Ravenna, with its domed octagonal central space, that seems to bave provided the model for the Palatine (imperial palace) Chapel at Aachen, Charlemagne's favourite residence in his later years. Polished granite and marble columns witb finely carved Corinthian capitals were brougbt to Aacben from Italy, some of the from Ravenna. Yet there are some striking differences between the two buildings. The Palatine Chapel, designed by a Frankish architect, Odo of Metz, has little of S Vitale's spatial subtlety and air of mystery. it is more massive; space is constricted and the vertical axis is felt more strongly than the horizontal.
