Chapter 9: What Causes Us to Hold Biases Against Outgroups? perception- process of selecting cues from the environment, organizing them into a clear pattern, and interpreting that pattern. A 3-step process: 1. selection process- picking out cues from our cultural landscape 2. organization- organize our perceptions by grouping similar objects or things together and labeling them with a symbol or name 3. interpretation- allows us to attach meaning to the data we receive-aka expectations; involve what we anticipate and predict about how others will communicate with us during an interaction ethnocentrism- we consider the views and standards of our own ingroup as much more important than any outgroup. 3 degrees of ethnocentrism: 1. distance of inditTerence(1ow ethnocentrism)- reflects the lack of insensitivity in our verbal and nonverbal interactions in dealing with dissimilar others ex: exaggeratedly slow speech or a dramatic tone of voice 2. distance of avoidance(moderate ethnocentris...
