Chapter 2 Atoms. Molecules, and Life What are Atoms? – – Atoms are basic units of matter and are composed of smaller particles. They are composed of atomic nucleus which has subatomic particles in it called protons that are positively charged and neutrons which no charge, electrons are negatively charged . Proton number is equal to the electron number. Total of 92 natural occurring atoms each forming structural unit of different element which is a substance that can not be broken down nor converted by ordinary chemical means. Number of protons in the nucleus is called the atomic number. When atoms have different numbers of neutrons than protons they are called isotopes. They are radioactive – they spontaneously break apart forming different atoms and releasing energy in the process Electrons move within restricted 3D spaces called electron shells because they are attracted to pos. proton and they repel each other.
