Chapter 5 – Database Processing Database – – The purpose of a database is to give people access to the information they need so they can do their jobs more easily or more quickly. It keeps track of things – A database is a self-describing collection of integrated records ○ Google is essentially a database  Web crawler – (not part of the database) software that surfs the internet and grabs new information for the database – takes a copy of the text that makes up a webpage and gives the text to the indexer  Indexer – each significant word(words used repeatedly, words used in the title, words used in the link, etc.) in page is extracted and indexed  Query Processor – uses interface (search box) to allow us to identify search criteria; engine matches criteria to index of terms previously stored; results formatter puts all those results in order from what relates most to least – Database development is a collaborative process.
