Tues May \Tn 1:20 Tydings BSCI105 ~ Shields STUDY GUIDE for FINAL EXAM SETUP ISO Total Roints PARTI MULTIPLE CHOICE (75 points) There will be 30 multiple choice questions (each worth 2.5 points) . 18 from new material ° 4 from first exam material . 4 from second exam material . 4 from third exam material kit is likely that questions from previous exams that students did poorly on may pop up again — similar by not necessarily the same. PART FELL IN THE BLANK, SHORT ANSWER (75 points) This is evenly distributed through all of the materia} for the semester. In order to help, I will try to give you options on questions to answer (i.e. answer 3 out of the following 5 questions) so that you can pick the topic you understand best. However, there will be some questions everyone will need to be able to answer. These are likely to involve, questions similar to questions found in PAK sets. (hint, hint) As you prepare for the final, look at the things I have listed below. Note that I have only a few things for each section (i.e. many previous statements have been removed). This does not mean that the deleted stuff was unimportant; it means that the emphasis will be on those topics listed. PLEASE NOTE: As you are preparing, try to tie things together. What material in the beginning has come up time and time again? In addition, we are constantly talking about things like structure and function, the many roles of enzymes, etc. Look for connections and concentrate on the big picture. Reviewing PAK 2 and PAK.3 would probably be a good idea as J like to use questions similar to PAKs, as you might have noticed.. \ Cram MISTRY & MACROMOLECULES o Compare and contrast: covalent bonds (polar and non-polar) ionic bonds hydrogen bonds major subatomic particles functional groups found on carbon skeletons atomic weight & number the four major classes of macromolecules the four levels of protein structure and the interactions responsible for maintaining each level odo®oo00 \MEMBRANES AND TRANSPORT o Describe the fluid mosaic model of membrane structure. ‘0 Describe what happens to cells exposed to solutions of varying tonicity. o Compare and contrast all means of transport WELL STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION o ° ° Describe the major functions of each of the organelles. Compare and contrast animal and plant cells. Compare and contrast prokaryotes and eukaryotes. € xam #2 _=-= ENERGY, ENZYMES and ATP ° ° ° How do the laws of thermodynamics relate to the study of metabolism? Make sure that you understand and can apply the following terms © entropy and delta S o enthalpy and delta H o free energy and delta G o exergonic and endergonic How do enzymes work? What factors impact on enzyme function? How? What are oxidation/reduction reactions? Given a reaction, could you determine which substance was reduced? What is a hydrolysis reaction?
